Title: New Guitar!
Post by: plastercaster on June 01, 2006, 07:20:00 PM
Just received my Tokai MIJ les paul that I bought 2nd hand of of Ebay last week. NEEDS setup cos there's marks on the bridge pickup where the bass strings have been hitting it. I want to get the neck relief, intonation, pickup height and action sorted but how much should this cost? I know that its just a quick thing with some screws and an allen key but I know if I do it I'll just scratch the finish and break the truss rod  :(   Black Dogs in as soon as Ive paid off my dad  :D

Nice guitar dude - i've had a full set-up including a fret dress quoted at £55 by my local tech.
P.S. May i ask how much? I've been interested in MIJ LPs for a while now

That just sounds like a straight set-up (depending on your tech), usually costs me about £30.

Nice guitar!

Just been quoted £30+strings for a full setup, which I'm quite happy about.
It'll be going for a setup some time in the next few days probably. Also does
anyone know if there is a way of telling what model it is without removing the
pickups? Its a 2002 model and the original owner says its either an LS80 or
LS100.

If that's cherry sunburst, then it can't be an LS-80

indy: who's that local guitar tech - and where are they local to? I have a guitar that needs a fret dress, and that's a much better price than I've found so far...

Hey, nice one, it looks fantastic!

I got a Tokai LC80 and it's just awesome. I firmly beleive they're as good as the real thing and so do the techs I take mine to, and they LOVE Gibsons. They do need better pups though. I got the Mules in mine and have been smug ever since.

Good choice man, enjoy!

Terry Hudson in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire. He's a great guy - he works for Fender aswell and all of his work is under warranty.

I know this isn't what you asked, but the things you've mentioned aren't that difficult to do yourself.  And, if worst comes to worst, you can always take it to a tech after you've stuffed it.   8)

I know this stuff ain't hard cos I checked up on how to do it so they didn't
pretend it was a neck-off job. However, the very first damage I ever Did to
my guitar was when I dropped some wire clippers on it when I was changing
the strings:cry:, and that broke a saddle. so I've been avoiding everything
except playing guitar ever since that happened. I am certain I'd only twist the
truss rod the wrong way, so I've decided to get a pro doing it is cheaper
than getting a pro repairing it.

Fair enough!  I know what you mean.  Only, I'm a persistent so-and-so and would most likely cause something to spontaneously combust before I gave up on it.

I live across the pond, but most set-ups here cost about $35 without a bench charge, and a bench charge can run $30-$40, so I have learned to do all that myself. However I will say that if you want to attempt to do this work yourself, there are tools that will help greatly and don't cost too much. Yeah you are buying tools you may only need once or twice every few months/weeks (depending on how you play), but a penny well spent, is still a penny well spent. Who knows. You may get good and do every kid's guitar in your area, and then you charge the $35 plus bench charge.

*edit*

I don't know if this will help or not, but try them. They are a U.S. based company, but they might help you anyway.

Have more shite than you can shake a stick at for repair, set-up, restoration, etc. I order from them a lot, and have always gotten great products.
