Title: How essential are they

Im thinking of getting hold of 3 BKP's, but im not too sure if im going to see a worthy improvement (not in regard to the BKP's, just in a change of pickups in general)

Basically, to what extent do pickups actualy improve/ effect your sound

Yes, they make a huge difference. Why else would we be spending money on it?!

It is a good way of making a budget guitar a whole lot better. The stock pups on budget guitars are often suspect. I am not sure if that is what you were asking but if I said that I have now got 3 Fender guitars where the pups have been changed for BKPs I think that might answer your question.

^ And the one you had that hadn't had its pickups changed until recently never saw action if i remember rightly, so what does THAT tell you??

Other than a fresh set of strings, changing the pickups on your guitar is the single most dramatic and least expensive way of changing the tone of your guitar.
