I have been looking at this amp and just wondered if anybody has heard one and how good they thought it was.
-
I don't think it's good, but what are you looking for, specifically? Gigging amp? Practice? Budget? Playing style?
-
Im looking for a budget gigging amp for under £400, and i play anything from B.B king to guns and roses/velvet revolver.
-
The new model has a slightly different voicing, they sound great. The tone is more natural now.

So you would recommend it then :?: .

i haven't tried the new one, but i tried my old avt100 last night for the first time since i got my engl (unfair comparison i know), and I almost killed myself it sucked so much. (exagerration for comedic effect)
the 100 is basically the clean, od1 and od2 channels of the 150.
basically, unless they've drastically improved the OD channels (the clean is the best channel, ironically), which i doubt (but am willing to be proved wrong in), it's not a good amp for the cash.
I'd look into some 30/50 watt tube amps- peavey classic 30, valveking, marshall dsl401, laney lc and vc 30 (haven't tried these laneys, but i hope to soon, and i hear good things- the other laneys i've tried have been very good), ashdown fallen angel (more metal), maybe even a fender hotrod (i didn't like the od channels on it though). You just need to try as many of those as you can, to see which you prefer.
That's about all i can think of in that price range... you aren't in too bad a place, though, because if the heaviest you play is VR and G N R, those amps will handle it fine, and are in your budget.

Used Laney GH50L and a cheap cab would get my vote for £400.
-
My friend had the old AVT150 head and it was terrible.
-
If you're in the South East, I'd pick up this bargain...

Steve, don't you think that great might be gilding the lilly just a SMIDGE?! ;)
-
Thank s alot guys, there is a laney dealer in my area which i will probably visit tommorow to try them out. I will try to find somewhere which stocks the dsl401 and try that out aswell. Unfortunately i live in the south west so that bargain is probably out of the question for me. :x

+1, that is a real bargain - those Laney heads are very much in the hotrodded JCM800 tonal area.
Don't concern yourself with what speakers the cab has loaded - if it has the HH speakers that Laney were using a while back then they're every bit as good as the V30s they were modelled after.

No i dont , i think its great for the money.

Fair enough.

I have used the AVT 275 a few times at gigs, which is the AVT 150, but with 2 speakers, and it was fantastic. 4 channels ranging from very clean to filthy. I play anything from clean Hendrix style sounds to QOTSA style rock. You should be able to pick up an AVT 150 for £200 secondhand.
p.s
If you go to www.myspace.com/thelugers and listen to Cherry Tart, the AVT was used on this.
-
ive got the AVT150X (the new one) and it's great, course i haven't compared it to anything apart from a 50Watt MG but it still sounds good to me, and probably loud enough for gigs, if not then £90 later you can have the extension cab

nah, tom, i can hear the characteristic trebly harsh solid-statey tone of the avt in there. and the clean and lower gain od1 tones are the best in the amp- which is what that song pretty much consisted of...
I know it's personal preference and all, and I'm not trying to start a fight or anything, but if you guys reserve the right to say the avt is awesome, then I reserve the right to say it sucks. and you can get a lot better for the same money (or very little more). IMO.
:drink:
-
^Well I agree with that as you can get good valve combos for the same price as them, but it sounded better in that clip than I've ever heard my mates.
-
I've been using the avt275 for about a year now. It can sound terrible at the wrong settings (but so can a mesa mk IV!)
It is very sensitive to positioning, (needs a stand or similar) to get rid of top end fizz. And balancing tone of shared eq on od1/2 channels takes a bit of experimenting. It can then sound very good and cover a lot of ground.
Good luck

nah, i've heard it as good as that. I just don't think "that" is anything to write home about, is all.

I didn't reallt think that AVTs where supposed to be amps that where designed to be impressive. Just a tolerably priced (badged marshall) that can handle gig conditions with a sort of valve type tone. No more no less.
I bought an AVT 50 two and a hald years ago brand new for 210 quidand it's simply ok (pity my playing dosn't help matters). At the time it totally cr@pped all over any affordable Line 6 amps for crunch and normal distortion sounds.
Two years on would I buy it, probably not as theres more out there, the voxes are much nicer, the mini mat exists, I have played the Tech 21 products and theyre nice too for solid state amps (The joy of Mosfets)
I tend to spend more time using a Fender Blues Jr as it's more my thing anyway as I think theyr'e more complementry single coil pickups.
Rob...
-
What if i said i could get the AVT50 for £50 would you recommend it then.
-
^ Tbh i'd be inclined to say no...unless you only have £50 to spend, otherwise saving and getting a better amp would still be the best option :P
-

For £50 I would say yes, if you don't like it you could always sell it for more (even Crack Convertors would ne hard pushed to cause you to lose money).
It's not the greatest amo in the world, but there are a lot worse (and I have defiantely owned some of them).

agreed. that'd be fair enough though, if marshall didn't advertise them as having "true valve tone" or whatever.
I just don't like to feel that I've been gipped, as I did with my marshall.
:drink:
anyway, for £50: as degoey says, if that's ALL you can get your hands on, moneywise, then go for it. If not, save a bit. EDIT: unless you know for sure that you can sell it on for more than that, in which case you could chance it.

Thats why advertising staff along with HR staff should be used for testing new surgical procedures upon (without anesthetic)
Hey it's got an Marshall badge on the front onless it has been set on fire people will buy it.

Did anyone see that website where people bought an Xbox 360 on the day of release and then smashed it up outside the shop and put a video of it on the internet - I'm thinking i should start a collection of people that want to see me smash up my MG :P

Could you smash up my MG too, please?
Why'd they hurt the 360? i don't understand...
-
I think to piss off the fanboys that had been waiting outside the shop for hours...but i don't really understand it myself - the MG would be funnier anyways...they did it with the ipod as well - http://www.smashmyipod.com/
-
^ i'm not 100% on this, but i'm assuming that:
(a) when the xbox 360 was released, demand outstripped supply, i.e. people were queuing to get them, and the shops had sold out.
(b) so those guys pre-ordered one.
(c) then got it and smashed it
(d) in front of people who wanted one and couldn't get it.
Pretty evil, but also pretty funny. Mostly evil though. I'm sure they wouldn't have been impressed if you bought something they wanted, but couldn't get, and then smashed it in front of them...
:D
-
funny i guess, but a total waste - i'm sure if you asked someone clever they'd tell you the money for that would have fed an African Family for a decade or something
-
Yeah, it's kinda sad that more people are willing to give this guy money to smash stuff up (he's taking donations for his SECOND PS3) than are willing to donate to worthwhile causes...
But technically, there's nothing wrong with me making a video of me playing through a burning MG, just to make a stand against marshall :P
-

hey, don't assume that all clever people are saints, i sure aint ... am immensely modest however

Coming back to amps, I normally use a Marshall JMP 100 all valve head with a 4x12 cab. If we are gigging without an inhouse PA, which is rare these days, the Marshall cab is a must, for good projection and volume. If there is a PA, the AVT 275 can easily cut it, as you don't need to project with the amp. Also, when miked you rarely hear the warmer all valve sound anyway. Thats how small the difference is. In a studio with a great mike, you would detect a warmer tone with the JMP.

It is very sensitive
I'll second that, its more sensitive to guitar changes also than most amps, but its still good.
-
I'm thinking now whether to save up for a mode four. it might take a while but it would be worth it.

grr- no it wouldn't - get a good valve amp dammit. ENGL screamer halfstack. sorted.
-
Damn you indy, beat me to it...
+1 on the screamer though - I love mine
Buddha: What makes you think the Mode Four would be good? It's still a hybrid - (even more) overpriced AVT really :P

Higher gain and power  . But i will have a look at the ENGL, the thing is i have never heard an ENGL.

my 50W JCM800 is louder than the 350W Modefour. REH-HEHE
also check www.rocksolidamps.com for clips, duh
-
Buddha: You've obviously never heard a mode four either or you wouldn't have said it's worth the money :P
The screamer will be louder, and has enough gain (as i've said before) to play Enter Sandman on my tele (I know it's not the heaviest of songs, but this is a TELE we're talking about  )
http://rocksolidamps.com/sounds.php ENGL soundclips - then go buy one :)
-
Just to say i have listened to the mode four, but after listening to the screamer, there's just no comparison really.it's bloody brilliant. PDT_012
-
^ yep, the screamer is a great, versatile little amp for the cash. seconded. Depends what you want to play though...
:drink:
-
I pley anything from B>B king to G n R/VR and occasionly i wil play Vai or pantera :P. But i can use my V-Amp for the B.B King stuff.
-
For £400 you could get a 2nd hand Laney AOR head (more or less a JCM800 with more gain) and a cab and it'd eat ALL of the AVTs and Mode 4's you could throw at it :)
There's obviously other options aswell, but this is just a suggestion.
I dunno if it's still a valid option but a few years ago I got a 100w JCM800 2210 Split channel head for £220, and that amp easilly covers G n R and Velvet Revolver etc :)
-
Thanks for the suggestion brow. :D i will have a look at the AOR and JCM 800.

I'm selling my JCM800 2x12 combo. And yes, I apologise for this shameless plug.
-
For the music you play the Mode 4 is TOTALLY wrong for you. You'ld be better off getting a DSL (better sound) or an Ashdown Peacemaker (better sound AND cheaper).
Indeed, coincidentally there's a second hand Peacemaker 60 half stack in the back of Guitarist this month for £480 ONO!!
