Title: Strat Springs...
Post by: deg0ey on June 07, 2006, 01:15:31 PM
It was a toss up really whether to put this here or in the Tech forum, but anyways, it's here now...

My strat has started making weird noises on some notes...It gets a sort of reverb sound and then a buzzing, and sometimes it sounds like it's playing the note twice (all this when played acoustically - haven't played plugged in for a while)...It kinda sounds like the trem springs are vibrating and hitting against each other...Is this normal strat behaviour, as i didn't notice it before and it's getting kinda annoying - and i was wondering whether there's anything i could do to make it stop

If it's not the springs it could be fret wear or dead strings. Try some WD-40 on the springs, then replace the strings. Look for any particuarly bad wear on the frets, and then post back with the results.

Try restringing first
New strings are always a good starting point
DON'T use WD40 near the guitar - just not a good idea
Try damping the springs at the back with a rag and see if the weird noise persists

If that doesn't fix it get the guitar looked at...
A tech shouldnt charge you just to give a first impression - try the strings first though.

My strat did that and it was the springs, and I just cut up some old Fruit of the Loom skivvies  and stuffed pieces of 'em in between all the springs and filled up that whole trem cavity.  Course you need to have the back cover on to keep them intact.  Yhey were clean, I promise!

Lol it's not the strings, i only changed them on saturday night...I'll try the rag thing later feline, i have a feeling that will help...

If not, it's getting a new tremblock and new springs in due course anyway, i bought it to upgrade but never got round to it so i'm not too worried because i can fix it later, it's just annoying

Does it happen on open strings AND fretted?

If it's only on open ones and NOT fretted - then it's likely to be the nut
If it's on all notes then look further

It's most noticeable on the open strings, and then from about the 12th fret upwards - hardly anything in between...I'm not really sure why it is - haven't had the chance to do the rag thing yet, but i reckon it'll be sorted by the time my upgrades are complete in a few months (one of which will be teh BKP's of course :P )
