Title: Narrowing down my choices....one more time
Post by: Mat_b on June 08, 2006, 09:23:24 AM
For a single pup guitar (bridge position)

which pup would be best for 80s/power metal that can handle both rhythm and leads with lots of highs (hence the 80s desire)

vote so i know what you think

I would have thought a VHII would be ideal?

Nailbomb seriousley, used to have an old Holy Diver didn't get on with it tho. I also am quite into powermetal and 80s. I have no ideas about the new Holy Diver or the Cold Sweat so I can't really comment on those pups.

out of the two i'd choose the Holydiver, but... as folk have already said, you really want a VHII, or if you're into the heavier side of 80's metal, yu owe urself a Nailbomb

I agree with indysmith and twinfan. but i have a VHII in the neck position so i can't comment on the bridge.

Cold Sweat or Miracle Man.

Cold Sweat or Nailbomb. The Nailbomb will do clean sounds a little better. If it's a one pickup guitar I would highly recommended the Nailbomb.

Seriously, it says in the holydivers description:

A celebration of the original '80s customised humbuckers. Muscular yet progressive tone with contemporary power and edge.

I voted HD.

thats why holydiver was one of the options. coldsweat is supposed to be great for highs so i dont know how itd compare. not many sound smaples available for either pickup.

nailbomb? from what ive heard its more for modern metal. way too bassy/muddy for high pitch stuff

Have you seen the video that TO did a little while ago...He was playing his ESP Tiger through a Splawn with a set of (new?) Holy Divers and they SOUND GREAT for the '80's metal thing you're looking for. I personally own a set of Nailbombs and I think they CAN do 80's metal (what can't they do?) but I seriously think that they're not the "absolute best" for that specific genre. They're not specialised for it, they just cope with it very decently. They are fatter than I think the typical 80's metal sound calls for. Hope that helps a bit! :)

For the job I'd think the Nailbomb, Holy Diver, Rebel Yell, Crawlers, or even VHIIs would be the best bet.

I'd imagine you could get some killer 80s sounds from the Cold Sweats as well with the proper setup, but it may be more limiting.

downrodeo is right, the nailbomb is the most versatile pup ive tried to date. Being a lucky owner myself, i feel the nailbomb is more suited for thrash. While the holydiver sounds like its right down your alley.

Anyways, youll be happy with whatever pickup you buy from BKP. I think Tim himself is playing metal with a pair of mules.

argh, i want them all!!  :(

as far as the distressing options go, i see theres a "battle worn" black in the gallery section

would tim do a beat up gold? or is that a question best left directly to him?

sorry, im new to this brand
