Title: Metallica at Download (Long)
Post by: Kemra on June 12, 2006, 12:01:54 PM
First I'd like to say to all metallica fans out there who didn't make it you missed out on a great gig and possibly the best set list that they will *ever* play.

If my memory serves they kicked off with something from ...And Justice for All I can't remember the name of, then they played The Unforgiven, Fuel, Where Ever I May Roam and a new song they didn't let us know the name of. I personally thought the new song was very good, fantastic riff and solo although I feel maybe it was a little too long.

After those songs the band left stage again, we thought they were changing the instruments yet again. But at that point the lights went off and a short slide show came on the viewscreens by the stage talking about Master Of Puppets. Then came the news ... they were going to play the album in it's entirety, back to back.    They even had videos to go wth songs like The Thing That Should Not Be had a video with a retilian monsters eye awakening and Welcome Home(Sanitarium) had a video of a guy getting crazier and crazier locked up in a cell.

Between two of the songs Kirk played an awesome solo spot even if a it was prefely interupted by a plane passing low overhead. When the band cam back for their encore they played Sad But True, Nothing Else Matters, One with full firework and explosion display and they finished proceedings with Seek & Destroy.

For me they could not hvae played a better set list than that. Their playing was so tight and they had they best sound of any band all day. Where as the guitars in other bands are normally drowned out by the drums but Metallica obviously had a sound engineer who paid attention so the guitars were exactly where they should be in the mix.

Niiiiiiiiiice, I half wish i went there 'cause it sounds like it was awesome, but i stand by the reason i didn't go - there are too many bands there that are really bad (imo), woulda been just going for 'tallica and that's a waste of a ticket to a festival from others :P

Did you see Axl and his new backing band there? Any good?

Sounds like good one! I saw them at Wembley in 1990 playing a lot of stuff from that album. I remember the sound being really top notch at that gig too.

So whats the story on Guns n' Roses? Were they as bad as the other thread said? I hope for his sake the new album is good or he'll be crucified!

The fans started throwing piss bottles at the band and Axl and the band left the satge for a while. Tommy got pissed and told the crowd ' That if someone threw one more $%&#in bottle that he was leaving" . Izzy did come out and play and that help calm down the crowd but they were pretty much vicious tot he band. I heard Axl slipped on stage and flipped somebody off . I think the band was also mad at the soundboard guy. I am listening to kerrang and reporters are asking to some of the fans that were there and they are crucifying this band. Donnington is a very special place for GNR history it's where they broke out . Sad to see that 19 yrs later they totally do not care for Axl . THis is a tough blow for new GNR I hope Axl recovers from this , he still has more shows to play. I'll give Axl credit , he did come back out on stage a nd finished the show withn a kick ass set but it diodn't matter the fans were hating them. They didn't deserve the setlist they got , and they sure as hell did not deserve Izzy . Stradlin played 5 or 6 songs with them, so that was cool. The fans were also hating on the new songs pretty much calling it shite. As far as the fans are concerned Metallica ruled Download and GNR were the biggest joke of the entire festival. I had a bad feeling about this show for GNR, Download fans have always been knows to be cold hearted people who will not hesitate on hating and retaliating towards a band. it looks like they choose GNR to be theat band this yr. WHAT A DISASTER THIS IS FOR GNR . Axl needs foreign fans to support him or he is done. United States has already turned his back on him. Looks like you haters got your wish , let the bashing begin.

i actually feel really bad for G'n'R. which is suprising because i hate Axl, and i think he's got some real cheek carrying on under the G'n'R name.
I'd quite like to see them though, still. I'd be interested to see how the old songs sound played by the new band (which is clearly full of all the wrong members >.<)

I only went to Download on the Saturday so didn't get to see G'n'R - I personally think its pathetic people treating a band like that, grow up for $%&# sake

highlights on Saturday were... Down, Alice In Chains, Sikth, Devildriver.

Metallica were ok but the sound was getting blown all over the place (same with all the bands).  I saw Metallica on the Black album tour when they were still good, they just looked & sounded like a band that can't quite recapture their spark imo. if others enjoyed it great, just not for me anymore as a live band.  oh, and the new song sucked just like when it was posted here last week.

Pity about J.D of Korn too - I was looking forward to their set as well.

I don't know if I agree. I mean for me Metallica had the best sound out of everyone on the main stage the entire day, I mean for most of the bands you couldn't hear their guitar players 80% of the time due to overly loud drummers. And Metallica's playing that night I though was incredibly tight and I don't think they could have possibly played any better. Actually seeing them play makes me want to become a better musician.

Sounds like great fun. But they ripped off slayer! (who did reign in blood back to back as an encore. With real blood! Well, ok, fake blood, but we can dream. Wonder whos it would be?)

Hey! i was at download whole weekend. And tallica actually opened with creeping death and dont forget they played One!! Jesus chris was immense. They had all pyrotechnics that made the stage like a real battlefield with chopper noises and explosions/squibs and all sorts. Thats when the song broke in. Pretty intense performance but id have to agree that they cant capture what they used to be. For a start James doesnt put in half the feelings he used to. Rehab took away his edge big time.

As for the rest of the festival it was amazing. Evergrey put on a pretty amazing quality performance despite them being put on the fvcking Snickers skate bowl  :x   . Saw some great bands and was an amazing weekend. Shame about the riots sunday night. Lotsa people got very hurt.

Bands playing whole albums has been done many times before
Many prog bands in the 1970s did it and Hawkwind and pink Floyd have done it a bit too.

In recent times:
Queensryche - Operation Mindcrime ( see the Operation Livecrime DVD)
Dio - Holy Diver
Cheap Trick - A different studio LP every night of the tour

Phish used to get fans to vote for which complete album by another band they'd play during their Halloween shows.  I think they did this four times in the mid-90s: The Beatles "White Album" in 1994, The Who's Quadrophrenia in 1995, The Talking Heads' Remain in Light in 1996, and The Velvet Underground's Loaded in 1998. (For each of these shows, they played 3 sets, with the "cover album" being the second set.)

In a similar vein, the stupendously named Colonel Les Claypool's Fearless Flying Frog Brigade used to perform all of Floyd's Animals album as its second set.  They released a live recording of one performance (at the Great American Music Hall in CA, I think) as Live Frogs: Set 2.

I saw Metallica @ Tallinn on 13th

They really kicked ass! And the whole Master Of Puppets was played there also
too bad the warm up bands really sucked and Metallica played their number 2 live song (right after One ) first, Creeping Death...
but because everybody got low feelings cuz of the lame warm ups, nobody yelled "DIE! DIE! DIE!" from bottom of their hearts as they should've done
so the Creeping Death could've been better but the other set really owned

I can't say anything but it was one KICKASS gig!!

And I got very high expectations on the new 'Tallica album, so don't let me down boys :D

really? I wasnt impressed at all by their new song. I think tallica are becoming much more of an acquired taste.
And yea, i think creeping death shouldnt have really been an opener. People need to get warmed up for that kinda stuff  8)

And Dream Theater do it quite frequently, but instead of their own they play one of their favourite albums by other artists.  They've even done Master of Puppets I believe.

I havn't heard the new song, they didn't play it @ Tallinn
but it's kinda weird cuz some has said that the new song sounds great and some ppl hate it
but according to what James and Lars have said about the new album, I'm really waiting for it
