I've just bought some secondhand pickups with Bare Knuckle Pickups Stamped on them. Can any one help me identify what exactly they are?
One is a Zebra Humbucker, with a N stamped into the base and 4 core conductor wire. The White and Green cores have been soldered together and give a resistance reading to the black wire of 4.39 Ohms. The resistance between the Black and Red wires is 8.12 Ohms.
The other is a full set of Strat Single Coils. They've come in an Apache Set Box. They all have the same magnetic polarity. One has a sticker with "Bridge" on it and reads 6.82Ohms the Other two give readings of 6.13 and 6.11 Ohms. Am I right in thinking the lowest resistance reading would be the neck pickup. There are no blue or Red Dot Stickers on the base but they are embossed with the Bare Knuckle Pickups logo, just like to top of this page. Are these Apaches ??
Thanks in advance
Chris

Aren't Mother's Milks 6.8k?
-
Yes, but all three pickups have that reading in that set according to the product spec on the main website. Similarly the Sultans all have 6.4 Ohms.
In this set the Bridge is higher wound than the other two.
If I could find out what type of magnet is on the pole pieces I could confirm which set these are supposed to be.
These are the pickups

Is this hand beveling on the pole pieces ??

Can anyone confirm which model these pickus are ?
Thanks

Can't confirm what they are, but I can tell you that I bid on both of them - but then decided I'd rather pay Tim for them instead 'cause he has nice hair...That and because I like to know what I'm getting
-
Ah - someone beat me to the eBay joke..
-
Well research tells me that the Humbucker is either a Mule or a Riff-Raff
Does anyone know how to finally confirm the difference between a Riff-Raff and a Mule ? :)
-
I guess the DC resistance makes it closer to a Riff Raff, but it's close to both. Have you given Tim a ring directly and asked him? Surely he'd know how to tell them apart?
-
Thanks for the reply Twinfan
This is a neck pickup so I can't compare it to the figures on the product page, as they will be for the bridge. Hence my query
Bridge pickups need the higher resistance to get the same volume output
from less string movement within the magnetic field.
I haven't rung Tim as I was hoping he would reply to this thread directly.

Humbucker could also be a VH2 neck pickup.
the singles sound like a calibrated set
So bridge will be highest DC resistance and neck will be weakest
Get those suckers in a guitar and try them
Them judge how you feel about them
Judge them by the sound rather than just the name
You may get a nice surprise

Good point Felineguitars
The humbucker is going in a Tokai Love Rock II as that already has the coil taping switches present and the existing gotoh pickups aren't scatterwound. However I would like it to match the other pickup which has a nickel cover.
How do I go about putting a cover on it ?
If I put a cover on it, would it need wax potting again ?
Cheers

Send it to Tim, He'll put a cover on for you without invalidating the warranty...He could probably tell you what model it is as well :P

Wire looks a lot like Heavy Formvar , so those singles look like Apaches to me.
-
Thanks for the confirmation HJM, that's music to my ears :D
Have you any ideas what the Humbucker is ?

I dont think the warranty is transferable as the pickups are second hand?
-
Maybe not...I don't really know tbh - but it'd prolly stil be best to get Tim to do it :P

I've put the Neck Humbucker into my Love Rock II
The Original pickup has H3 Stamped on the bottom, no other markings.
It has 4 wires and shielding.
I've wired the BKP in exactly the same order as the old pickup on the back of the coil tapping switch.
The neck humbucker sounds great fully engauged but I get a very nasal tone when I flick the coil tap switch.
Do I just need to switch over the Green and White ??
Thanks

No worries I've sorted it by trial and error.
Not the most scientific way, but it's worked
Boy these pickups are clear and resonant.
The notes on the BK Neck pickup are clearer, brighter than the
Gotoh H3 in the bridge. Strange to have more trebble at the Neck :?
Looks like I'm going to have to save up and contribute to Tim's pension
fund for a new bridge pickup 8)
