Guys,
I just got a second hand MM EVH signature guitar, there's just one thing bothering me - the bridge pickup sounds a little 'single coilish'. I have another MM EVH to compare it to and it's definitely not the same. The pickup selector switch has been changed at some point, could this be it? Any other ideas?
Thanks in advance.

if the switch was replaced, it could of accidentaly been wired split aswell.
-
Thanks, how could I find out? Are there any other faults which could give the same symptom?
-
well.. thin and single coily sounding tips it off.
which pickup is it? you can take a look at the wireing inside the control cavity.
each wire is a diferent color and depending on the manufacturer of the pickup, you can check out how it is wired.

Thanks. It's the bridge pickup, to start with it was also squealing alot. I cleaned the pot (which was filthy and scratchy) and that appeared to stop the squeals. The selector was changed to a swtichcraft selector, any ideas how it should be wired up so I can check?

tap the coils with a screw driver while connected to an amp, this way you can find out if only one of the coils is active. If both are active, the wiring could be phase inverted or sth.
I checked the switch on my MM Axis and it looks as if it'd be switching coils independently (for whatever reason).
-
Thanks Hunter,
I just did the check with a screwdriver and both coils seem active, ie. the volume from both 'taps' was the same.

Sounds like it's been wired in parallel not series.

This is why you don't let a noob touch your guitar ;)

Which colour wire is connected to where (assuming 4 conductor output)
Colour coding is as per Dimarzio standard codes
Red = hot
Green = earth
Black and white soldered together and taped off - unless coil tap is utilised
Damnit - my next post brings me to 666 posts and I will be loathe to post anymore as 666 posts looks cool.

So does that mean we can start a "Feline Smells" thread, and there's nothing you can do about it??
Or would you just give us a good ear bending via PM? :)

Guys, thanks for the replies.
Turns out the pup was open circuit! It must have been working like an ariel to pick up signal? I'm guessing corrosion caused it as there are signs of it elsewhere.

Is your guitar trans red colour with a floyd? I just traded one of those in a newcastle shop about three or four weeks ago. Just wondered whether it might be the same one...

I am actually considering to take out the stock di marzios and replace by a pair of VHIIs. Anyone got an idea whether this could give me more oomph without losing the great cut/crunch of them?
Also a good split sound is quite important, as the Axis is the only "Strat style" guitar I have.

There are wiring diagrams available on the official Ernie Ball website, you will also be able to order the correct replacement pickup selector from them.

I LOATHE the pups in my Axis.
Would change them for some 'real' pups 'BKP' in an instant, but still wanna sell her so not much point :(.
I also think, although poss. simpler, anchoring the pups straight to the body is more agro than benefit.

Is a statement like that not shooting yourself in the foot a bit when you're trying to sell it? :drink:
-
Not at ALL.
Seeing as it is an AMAZING guitar which does GREAT tones.
However, BOTH my sets of BKP's are Warpigs, go figure the tone I like to use most
Axis is great guitar but NOT WP evil.
Saying I loathe the pups is a tone thing anyway, they are custom voiced dimarizios with 5 way switching. Now if I said, they cr@p out alot, sound muddy etc. That would be silly when wanting to sell. But saying I loathe the tone as is is a preference :)

I see your point :P And chances are people here won't care as most would intend it to get BKP's if they bought it from you lol
