Ive been looking to get a HSH set for an Ibanez that will allow me to play hard rock/metal and reducing the gain give a nice crunchy blues rock tone and ultimately great cleans; basically something to cover all aspects. I emailed Tim and his 3 recommendations were:
1. CS/Trilogy/MiracleMan
2. Holydriver/SlowHand/Holydriver
3. RebelYell/Trilogy/RebelYell
If you were to choose one of these sets, which would it be and why? I'd love em all but I simply cant afford it. Help me please!
-
RY/ Mother's Milk / RY.
Personal choice.
-
Sorry, where I have said Trilogy, it was Irish Tour
-
Irish Tour, why not!
-
If it were me, I'd choose the Holy Diver over Miracle Man. IMO it does the crunch sounds (pushes a valve amp into nice "break up") better.
Can't comment on the Rebel Yell as I've not got one (yet :))
Also, Irish tour is a pretty good mix with the HD, so Irish tour middle & HD bridge would be my choice. No opinions on neck as I've not yet tried any BKP humbuckers in the neck position (FWIW a Nailbomb & VHII for my Les Paul are next on the shopping list )

I have the Holydiver with Trilogy's in a HSS strat, and RY's in a PRS. I also know the sound of CS/Trilogy having set up TO's Wayne. I like the Holydiver/Slowhand/HD idea. This will be a bit 80's but the Slowhand is a greatly under recommended single coil (I have 2 of them, one in the centre of a MQ/Slowhand/Mini-mule, and the other as a Tele neck with a Brown Sugar bridge.
Just to keep you confused the RY is a great pickup too with some excellent clean sounds when it is turned down, and I have the IT in the centre of a Nailbomb/IT/Nailbomb set on my Ibanez. But at the moment I am fitting a Kahler to it so it will be a few weeks before I will hear it.
-
Slight threadjack, but PhilKing - do you reckon the Nailbomb has more or less output than the HD?
-
The Nailbomb has more high end, and a little less bass than the HD, but the HD has a ton more midrange. Overall power output is pretty similar.
-
I would go with an Alnico V magnet. You can add gain to an Alnico V or remove it and it should sound good, but it's difficult with a ceramic. ;)
What Ibanez is it? What's the woods on the guitar?
-
Both the Nailbomb and the Holy Diver are Alnico V, as is the Rebel Yell.
-
Its an Ibanez RG570DX, fantastic guitar to play, the neck is superb, but is just let down by the stock pickups which are just too thin. The body is made of basswood I think.
The usual upgrade for this guitar is dimarzio evolutions, but am looking for something different i.e. a far superior set of pickups that will give me the versatility and sound that dimarzios simply cannot match.
Im leaning towards the RY's with Irish Tour at the moment :)

Do you think I should get open coiled pickups, or should I get some covers put on? Im not sure what covers would look good.
I thought about the aged nickel since the rings and trem on mine are faded in parts but wondered if it would look stupid since the single wouldnt be covered.
Any suggestions?

I vote for burnt chrome.

Everything should always be burnt chrome...I wonder what burnt gold would look like *ponders*
You could always go camo - and get the camo cover for the single as well...
-
Burnt Chrome is the way to go, best cover ever.

Yup, I was just saying one of these should be good ;)

I didnt know you can get metallic covers for the singles, do you know what covers you can get? Could burnt chrome be made?
-
Dunno about burnt chrome for singles, because the chrome covers I have are plastic. Couldn't hurt to ask though.
-
I don't know that you can get metallic covers for the singles, but you can get a camo cover for the singles - looks like a white one painted in camo colours http://www.bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=763

Just PM'd Tim asking that exact question...We'll soon see what he says :)

I have to admit, the camo set looks, well...... sexual. I think with the way that I have faded parts on the trem and rings atm would suit that.
Burnt, although very nice, would prob be best suited for a different colour. Im just trying to imagine it in mine........
-
Yeah, I love the burnt chrome when you see them on their own - but I dunno what they'd actually look like in a guitar....if anyone has them and could post pictures it'd be helpful :)
-
It would also be nice if someone could post a pic of a set of camos in their guitar cos ive only ever seen them on their own. :)
