Title: Bridge-Bridge?
Post by: Window-Licker on June 20, 2006, 07:57:17 PM
Hi guys, i recently baught a new guitar, a dean cadillac, mainly for the great body and neck, looking at buying a set of bare knuckles to go in it, looking for a great chunky palm mute and rythm, with a scooped type sound with the combination of being able to do some finer fast picking of single notes.

Was just wondering if going for different pickups, both in the bridge voicing would be a decent idea? i have a set of calibrated miracle man pickups in another guitar and love the bridge sound as it seems tighter and not as bassy as my neck pickup... so the main vision i had was, buy a miracle man bridge and put it in the neck, then add something abit different in the actual bridge position, like a nailbomb.

i know it may seem a little stupid doing this as the pickups are voiced for bridge or neck, but theres no set forumla is there? asin the miracle man bridge that i love would still sound the same if it was moved to the neck etc etc? Just thinking there may be some purists or something out there thinking im breaking a big taboo lol, dont want an angry torch wielding mob on my doorstep.

The same pickup will not sound the same in different positions of the same guitar. The reasons for this are that the string vibrates differently at different places. The reasons for the different voicing is that the string vibrates more above the neck pickup than the bridge, therefore the pickup needs more winds at the bridge than are needed at the neck for the same volume to be heard...

Because of this fact, the sound will not be the same either - That's why they are not wound the same for bridge and neck...

EDIT: If you did put a bridge position pickup in the neck slot, chances are that it would overwhelm the pickup in the bridge with the volume - and switching between the two mid song would be a nightmare

EDIT 2: It's possibly this difference in vibration that makes the bridge pickup sound tighter and less bassy - and that 'problem' with the neck pickup would still be there, even if a bridge pickup were used
