heh

you remind me of me.. all these guitars ;)

i've been good since getting my custom one... although i've changed amps and bought a synthesiser instead  8)

I LOVE that explorer, i'm after a pointy guitar at the moment.. explorers hmm

Hetfield uses the stock pickups these days doesnt he? I think even MOP was recorded with stock Gibson Explorer.. it was later he went ESP and EMG's.

Saying that, id reckon a Miracle Man bridge \ Mule neck would put killer riffs and ultra bluesy solo type sounds within reach...

Id say itd be between nailbombs and miracle man for the bridge at least.

Hey Chris,
bit of a Hetfield anorak lol. He got sponsored by ESP after Ride the Lightning was recorded and has used ESP Explorers since (save two ULTRA valuable Ken Lawrence handmade jobs). He has also used EMG  81/60 pretty much in all guitars since (he used a Jackson, later to be King V on MOP as well as two white gibbo explorers).
As for today he has re-finished a orig. '76 Explorer to flat black with rusty pickguard (nicknamed Rusty) and to his 'moving toggle switch' specs but still with 81/60 EMG's.
As for St.Anger he got abit 'crazy' with guitars, not just using Mesa's either, been using a Diezel head amongst others.
Reckon MM for bridge, not sure about neck, either calib. MM set or summt like CS or Mule maybe?

I really like Hetfields sound, its kind of a perfect 'jack of all trades' one, his solo bits sound ace aswell as his rhythm...

theres a Ken Lawrence copy on Ebay right now, i think its got an actual Ken Lawrence neck but could be wrong... bit pricey tho!

CS could be good... more output than the mule.. might balance better with the MM.

Decisions decisions ;)

Warpigs? Dont 'tallica use EMG, and I think I read somewhere about the Warpigs being EMG-killers.. then again you are getting Warpigs for the SG arent you.. hmm I have no idea then

Explorers are cool guitars.

Personally, I would put a Cold Sweat in there for a classic Metallica tone. Weren't Dirty Fingers pups used in the Explorer at some point? After Cliff died and they ran out of Mustaine songs to pillage, they sound like butt.

Congratulations on your new arrival.

Tim as usual sounds spot on with the 'Custom Ceramic Warpig' idea. I've heard about him making these before and I remember that the feedback was that they are massive and tight - sounds perfect for your Explorer and the tone you're going for in such a big piece of mahogany

The Cold Sweat neck gets the best reviews as a partner for the high-gain humbuckers so I'd go there. Articulate for sweeps and leads with just the right amount of power.

Good luck.

If you want Hetfield's tone of the past, (Black Album) go for a Miracle Man / Mississippi Queen combo. If you want the drop tuned St. Anger sound, you'll be happier with Warpigs.

Explorer and KK 10 band EQ arrived yesterday.

Explorer, what can I say, for what I paid, very good deal!
It has a few small dings, has turned creme (well it is a '91),has a few v.small nicks down to the wood (but not enough or big enough to worry about) and the back of neck is well worn. Actually, on thorough appraisal it looks no unlike a 'Gibson Limited Signature', that is worn down in all the right places ala copying a famous players guitar.

It plays WONDERFULLY. The neck and frets are sublime and the sustain, OMG goes on for days.

So, today, with lemon oil, solder, soldering iron in hand, surgery began.

What can I say;

Explorer + KK 10 Band EQ + ENGL Half Stack + Custom Calibrated Warpigs = Holy Fu**ing Sh*t!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good ness only knows what my custom SG with reg. Pigs (still in Texas) sounds like!

TIM, although you already def. know it,

You're  Da Man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Crank it up? lol
Gotta do a 'sambo' over vol. 3 on ENGL earplugs req., not preffered but REQ.

I will cert. try clips but only brought the Black Box with me (finally sorted ac/ac supply, sheesh) and NOT the pc cable or program :(
Also, my laptop, which has nec. processing power, is still stateside too.

Will do what can though.

Been on this board for , I dunno, bout 6 months now, finally got chance (two sets of BKP's to post) and now cannot right away :(

Ah well, need a pc interface and mic anyway so can record the ENGL itself, shame to use a 'modelling amp' when have that.

So, maybe Firewire Solo and SM57 needed. Dunno. LOT going on her still, and I mean ALOT! :(

Will see if can put on sound cancelling headphones and give ya a blast though Mr. 38 th :)

Let the countryside ANNIHILATION begin

BTW,got 10's on it, never tried heavier and don't like lighter :)
