...have a different wire gauge on each coil? Eg. one coil has 42 and the other 43. If so, which pickups, and if not, why not?

Most humbuckers are built so that both coils match (with a few exceptions like a Dimarzio humbucker from hell), this is neccisary so that the hum is suitably bucked

If you used thinner wire on one coil you would need more windings on it for the coils to match (i think), the tone of each coil would be different but not so much that most people would notice.

What is it you are hoping to achieve,

i bet Tim could do this for you.  I reckon you could get some interesting pickups if you had purposely mismatched coils made from different wire (ie. a 43awg coil wound to about 3-4k (maybe slightly dearmondish)and a 42awg coil wound to around 5-6k(stratish) but it would take a lot of experimentation to get something that worked and you would need a few switches to make the most of it and obviously you would lose the hum cancelling effect of a well matched coil humbucker.

Dont take my word as gospel though, this may be a more common thing than i know about.

Simple answer is no,tried it on a variety of prototypes and didn't like the results.

Thanks Tim, that's just what I wanted to know.

WezV - I'm aware that the humbucker wouldn't function as well as standard ones in cancelling hum, but that's also the case with scatter wound pickups like the VHII. The VHII has mismatched coils and sounds great, even if there is a smidge of 60 cycle hum present in the sound. The kind of wiring I had in mind was something like wiring one coil with as much 42 gauge wire as you'd usually use on a standard pickup before it got muddy, and then the same with a 43 gauge coil. Something like a VHII / Emerald hybrid? I dunno, just floating the idea about really.

I'm using a HB made from one coil ofa SD 59 and one coil from a SD CC. whcich is the same as what you're aslking about. It's great, the best humbucker I've tried yet.

It was EVH who pioneered the idea from what I understand. He used the same one I have with an alnico 2 magnet to record Fair Warning.

I have mine with an alnico 5. I have an alnico 2 one laying around but the guitar isn't together yet, so it's gonna have to wait a minute.

I was also pondering asking to Tim to wind me one with  44/43. But that's fardown the line on my musical purchases

Here's way to much info on the subject
