Me "Yeah thanks Nige thats enough eh mate. Is that all you know of his? What about  Johnny Be Goode?"
Nigel "I have heard of him but I don't know his songs"

One of my favourite verse in all of rock`n`roll !!!

Chucks the founding  father of all modern  guitar playing more so than Hendrix, Page, Van Halen et all.....

But wasn't 90% of his riffs taken from the keyboard player? Explains why all his songs are not in 'normal' guitar keys. IE a lot of Eb and Bb keys are used.

I think.

Yes Badgermark, the story goes that Chuck "adapted" the riffs from Johnny Johnson's playing.
In fairness to my mate Nige, the poor sod lives a life of drudgery with an incredibly lazy idle wife who does abosolutely nothing other than socialise with her mates whilst he runs the house and holds down a full time job and he does not get much chance to listen to music. Having said that, his favourite group is Supertramp so he deserves everything he gets imho having inflicted it on me in the car on one occasion. ( now I am sure someone somewhere on this forum is gonna flame me for that).

With a name like Nige, I was thinking XTC must be his favourite!  Perhaps if his missus is like you say, then his favourite Supertramp song is 'Right' (I think that's the title - the one that goes 'Right, right, you're bloody well right. You've got a bloody right to be', sor words to that effect!).

Poor Nige. He should go on house strike and she if she shapes up. I love a bit of Chuck Berry, that's where Steve Jones from the pistols got all his licks! I've played Johnny B Goode a few times in pubs when they let people jump up and sing, hmm best forget that!

I don't mind a bit of Supertramp. My Dad used to play it a lot in the 70's so it reminds me of being a kid! There's a few old bands that i got into that way. 10cc   Led Zepp,  Pink Floyd, mind you they got into that terrible lot Manhattan Transfer! Do you remember them? Ugh the pain...... :x

I think his wife is always "Making Plans For Nigel" ( Phil, I know it won't be wasted on you)- she is one of those people that does bugger all but gives him hell constantly and a list of jobs to do whilst she is out socialising. Her taste in music is terrible- she loves Bay City Rollers and those terrible cheap phoney reggae compilation cd's that any self respecting reggae fan would not even use as a drinks coaster. I wouldn't be at all surprised to hear he'd bludgeoned her to death with a passion fruit or maybe a guava if he gets really angry.

Sounds like a fairly unhappy marriage...Has he tried to talk it out with her? - I'm not gonna try and give advice, as I'm 17 and have never had a serious relationship, but to me it sounds like a situation that needs to change

Johnny B Goode is a legend of a song though - and a great end to back to the future also

It is not that simple-she wouldn't be interested in listening - sad really as he is a decent hard working bloke. I think he thinks she will one day change and they have a kid so it ain't just about him and her- what a depressing thread I have started.

Well at least he has Mr Beatle as a friend, which is a great honour to my mind...

Quick question: Where did the 38th part come from?

Sounds like your friend and the kid would be better off on their own, which is a sad thing to say.

Hey it's not depressing but it is sad.

Rob...

:D You have to be smart & unfortunatley your mate Nig is going to have to work it out for himself i`m afraid.

Personnal fav Chuck song "Roll Over Beethoven"  & there`s nothing wrong with a bit of Supertramp. i was watching TV the other night & they showed a clip of Supertramp playing "Dreamer" live on Top Of The Pops. Unbelievable made all the current stuff look pathetic in comparison.

I've known couples like that Steve, it does get to you when there good friends. Invite him along to one of your gigs if he hasn't been, I bet he would have a great time.

I should get him to a gig Johnny. He is a nice guy and deserves better. His missus likes to come across all " I will do anything for anyone" but she is as shallow as a puddle. OK  deg0ey, time to come clean. The 38th  is a little p*ss take of mine to a time when everyone claimed to be responsible for or an essential part of the Beatles success- many people liked to claim that they were the "5th" Beatle- some had good reason to have claimed that but didn't because they had too much class ( George Martin)-others were just freeloaders. It was my little dig at freelaoders everywhere- may you get your comeuppance. There you go- that is the only time I will expain that. Not very funny as I'd have liked.

Wow, I feel very priviledged to have been informed :) When and where is your next gig sir, I may have to come and see it - as I'm fairly local :)

Most of our gigs are private functions but the next "public" gig is at the Hen & Chicken in Southwater on 29th July.We are not a metal band btw- we just play stuff we like and are starting to slip in the occasional original song. We have something going at the Plough at Rusper soon too but date to be confirmed. Say hello if you are there-I will be playing either a Strat or  a Tele. We are also playing that Elephant & Castle in West Chiltington 9th September.

Do you always take one Strat and one Tele, and not the 2 Strats?  When I was last playing regularly (and when I had hair like Tim!), I used to always take a Strat and an SG junior.  The last gig that I played at though I had my 53 LP and a PRS Standard (this was a private house too - that is why I took the LP - normally I am too scared to take it out!).   Even though I played the LP most of the time, I was missing having a Strat.

I'd picked that up by your choice of guitars tbh :P But yeah, unfortunately one of my mates bands is playing round here on the 29th and I said I'd go to that - And I assume these places you're telling me are pubs, I've never actually heard of them...maybe I live too far away

Phil, I usually take all three ( 2 Strats and Tele) but it is overkill in all fairness. My US Strat was always my main one and I bought the Jap one cos it was Sonic Blue ( John Lennon and George Harrison both had sonic blue Strats and I  love the colour more than any other)and as it played well I justified it by saying that I need it in case I broke a string in the middle of a set ( Mrs 38th had to be convinced and the practical reason won her over). The Jap one was purely a spare but now it has Slowhands, I use it more and more. I use the Tele when I feel like it for a change-we do a few Stones songs and I like to use it on them but if I am going to take two,  it'll be the Strats.

I can see how you would like the Slowhands, I don't have a full set in anything, but I have a couple in different guitars and really like the tone.  I am waiting on a couple of Mothers Milks for a hardtail strat, as these are the only Strat pickups that I have never really played.  I think I am putting a Rebel Yell in the bridge position (I tend to lean towards H/S/S setups - I ruined an old Strat that way years ago!), but haven't really pushed Tim on the set.

I got into Tele's late in my playing life, because I always liked Strats and Les Pauls.    Even though a lot of people I liked used them, I had played so many bad ones in the 70's that I never was interested.  Then I went with a friend to get a guitar for him and tried a 60's Jap Tele.  I told him that if he didn't buy it I would - I still have it (he bought a Levinson Blade).  After that I got hooked on the tone (though I was never into the neck pickup that much, until I got the 62).

I know how tempting it is to take more guitars with you than you really need.  I used to make the mistake of taking different ones to rehearsal, then not having that one at the gig. For any gigs I am likely to play now, I can get away with 2, with one really as the backup.  I wire my H/S/S with the mega switch to give me coil tap and the 'Tele' 2 pickup setting.  With this I am pretty much set (though years ago I had a guiitar made with the switching I wanted, however it is so complex that you can't really use it very quickly, so I never used this guitar live!).
