Title: What would you do?
Post by: Dakine on July 04, 2006, 06:23:46 PM
OK, LOVE my ENGL, but for good distortion it needs either channel 4 or extreme volume. Either way, too much for my mum (bless her). No, when no-one is in house, no worries (is in a 30x25ft room).

So, attenuator or ................... Minmat?
I have spoken to Hayded and he put a Big D in front of a minimat for me to test distortion and said it was good (but how good will it be? I go for Masters of Puppets tone).
An attenuator will be about same price roughly as a Minimat and seems abit of a waste with this choice. Ideas/thoughts?

Also, I really think (although am TRYING to stay away from pedals, Keep It Simple Stupid, apart from my HBE Power Screamer) I could do with a EQ. Thoughts/ideas/suggestions.

Thanks guys,
Nick

It's gonna be the same old questions.

Are you ever going to be playing in a band situation (if yes then the attenuator looks like a good idea).

Have you tried the Minimat yourself, and what cab would you be using with the minimat.

Theres nothing wrong with pedals, providing theyre the right ones ;)

I'd get something tube screamerish (like a digitech bad monkey or similar) to give you a gain boost without fuzzing up your sound too much. This should keep your mum happier. Alternatively, as I'm sure you've got the money (it's about the same price as a powerbrake) you could get the Damage Control Demoniser and run it through your clean channel. It's very highly rated and supposed to give you all the metal tones you could ever want.
On the EQ front, obviously the Boss and Dunlop units are well thought of, or alternatively you could fit a passive mid boost to your guitar very cheaply.

I'd go the route of the attenuator tbh - The Demoniser as suggested by Sifu would be a good option if the Screamer didn't have amazing distortion anyway..but it does, so you may as well make the best of it...

Secondly, you can't add a passive mid boost to anything as passive does not giveth, only taketh away :P

Thirdly can one of you (Sifu or Dakine - decide among yourselves) please change your avatar, it's really difficult to skim read threads without reading a name

EDIT: The MXR EQ is very highly rated amongst people I know - although I've not used one myself

Hey guys, THANKS!

1. yes, intend to gig down line (not getting rid of ENGL, MINMAT would be second head).
2. Have Home Brew Electronics Power Screamer, aka HOT TS.
3. What about the 10 band MXR (I know they are Dunlop) EQ?

Basically I play heavy, not thrash (I don't think of MOP Mettallica is thrash per se) and heavy rock, aka Bullets and Octane (think GnR meets Punk).

Basically going to Matamp is not an option right now. But a. they are British and handmade, b.Hayden knows his shite, c. they are about same as an attenuator (actually minimat has one built in).

Just want the 'tube breakup' sound at less than ENGL ear bleed level LOL.

I'd try out the Minimat first to see if it does what you want. If it does then just get that, if not I'd get a 2nd hand hotplate or similar.

Lovin the new avatar - Didn't realise at first, I assumed someone else was talking :P I should really stop going on picture alone as to who is speaking...

I'm obviously not as considerate as you, I just turn mine up :P

Good luck with whatever route you take though Mr Nick

Jeez you are making the question harder ;)

Personally I wouldn't do anything till I tried a minimat out, both with and without boosters / distortion pedals. Once you get a feel for it you will be better placed to decide.

Oops, my bad, the ones I'd been looking at were active, they just didn't say it    However, he could get a passive mid CUT fitted, and then set the amp for his lead tone.
Nice Avatar, but I really liked your Dimebag one.

I dont know where you live in relation to wherever the Matamp warehouse place is but I think you can go try some out if you arrange it with em.. may be wrong though.

does the power screamer not get you the tone you want, nick?

Assuming high volume does, then the hotplate might be worth a look- but remember it still won't sound just as good as cranked, since you need the speaker to be working well too...

I know I tried a hotplate that was built into a bivalve recently, and, while the standalone one might be better, I don't want one, now...

why don't you just use channel 4? or does it sound too "metal"?

Just some random thoughts and questions there, nick!

Ben, Daryll took up too much bandwidth and had complaints as such (so told), high energy in life and avatar's it seem's, 'Black Tooth Grin' :)

Dave, the ENGL will MELT faces. Just to do so at lower vol. is not so easy (even on chan. 4).

I think what I shall do, is buy an equaliser. This will allow WAY more tonal possibilities at many volumes and will (ihope and believe) transform this and TBH any amp.
The MXR 10 band is fave. Although, scratching head abit. They have two versions. A normal one and a Kerry King sig. model (only diff. being KK model can support two amps) and have seen (here online in UK) KK model cheaper than normal one (scratches head). LOL, anyway, when get bit of peace will order one and go for there.

Champing at the bit right now for me Explorer to arrive. When it does (esp. after custom Warpig fitment) this may all be a moot point anywa LOL. Still gonna get an equal. to put in effects loop though as think (once set up, which could take looooooooooooooong time) could indeed be 'godly'.

It'll be interesting to hear what you think of a 10 band EQ pedal, that monster spec' guitar and your amp!!

To be completely honest, with recent events (more than just father passing) I am a DEF. pissed with world/black aura. So, going for total ANNIHILATION. Hopefully will acheive this

^ ah, ok, go for it, nick- with only one eq for all the channels, an eq could be handy for the screamer, no-matter the purpose!

I have no real experience with EQ's, I can't really help you with that...

Power attenuator!

Hotplate is good
Weber Mass cheaper and more flexible (buy direct from USA, no hassle)

Never failed me with my old JCM800, my ENGL Fireball (eeek ++ for gain on that beast) and now my Screamer.

I was 'cranking it' on wednesday.. master on 4, my Weber Mass on 2 and the sound was       (i bypassed the Mass and nearly shat myself with the volume of the screamer on 4!!!)

A mini mat will probably get you the Judas Priest style 'chunky' distortion, but no where near Metallica\thrash imo..

The Kerry King is good, very good buy imo.

Man, i just got REALLY into Death (again..its weird i was a fan but last few years hardly listened to em!!!)... need money for a Warpig for the Dime o Flame... its gonna be my Dime o Death and melt my neighbours faces ;)
