Eger is a historic city in the northern part of Hungary. It's a well-known and popular city here because after we got finally pwned by the Turks in 1526, Eger managed to resist the siege in 1552. Although the central part of the country got occupied for about 150 years, that victory protected the northern part for some time. (Later, in 1596 the castle fell, though.) Géza Gárdonyi, a Hungarian author wrote a book about the 1552 siege in 1901, which has been a really, really popular novel here ever since. So even those who don't know our own history here do know the story of Eger.
The built heritage of the city isn't THAT special - a castle, baroque style houses, narrow streets, and a minaret - BUT THE WINE! :D The neighbourhood of Eger is one of the best wine lands in Hungary.
I attend a cultural/scientific "self-cultured" group (haven't found a better term...) and we closed the term in Eger this weekend. After the formal part of the day we were taken to a really, really old wine cellar that wasn't used anymore and had dinner there. After the welcome schnaps ;) we tried five different wines during the courses, starting with light, sweet white and finishing with strong, dry red. The hosts introduced each wine and described how they were made etc. I had a GREAT time there, thought I'd share some photos with you that were taken by a friend in the group.
