As part of the Tower Music Festival in London.
Buddy Guy opened the show and the blues legend showed he can more than cut it. Not only an amazing player and singer, but hilarious to boot!
But Jeff Beck stole the show. I saw Satriani play at the Hammersmith Apollo the other week and fell asleep (no joke), it was the fourth time I had seen him and to be honest, one of the worst gigs I have ever been to. Well, this Beck gig was everything the Satriani gig was not.
He had tone, his melodies were spot on, but his sheer control and command over the guitar is something I have never seen anyone else even come close to mastering. His style is unique, his ability to play melody lines just using the trem jaw dropping... awe inspiring.
One of the best lessons in guitar playing I have ever witnessed.

Wow that must have been great. Jeff Beck is under rated and I say that knowing that people call him brilliant- he is beyond that in my view. You had a treat there.
-
did you shoot some pics?
I am really jealous now !!!!
-
I envy you, brother. Does Jeff even use a locking whammy bar to do that magic?. To me he is the most unique guitarist I have ever heard. I just got "You had it coming" the other day. It's his brilliant take on Techno. I love that slow Ethereal Twang bar stuff. Cheers

I agree, Beck is beyond brilliant. He is a one of a kind that continues to move forward. Every time he releases a new album I know that I am going to learn something new.
lifted,
As hard as it is to believe, no, there is no locking trem on his guitar, just the updated Fender version of the trem that has existed for about 20 years.
I did have a treat... I still have not stopped smiling!
-
Man you posted pics, awesome!!
Yeah I think he has a roller nut, at least that's what on his signature strat.
Say, which Marshall tops does he play there? Could you identify them?
-
You saw Jeff Beck, Woah! :D I agree with everthing you say about him. I've only got a best of cd of his that I bought in 96' I play it to death and the stuff he does still blows me away. I'd love to go and see him live. Thanks for the pics March!
Scatterbrain, that's a technical one of his that really gets me and one of his 80's ones, The Pump. At first I didn't get it but now it's something else! It's has a lot of that trem 8) control your were saying about. I must buy more of his stuff as i know i'm missing out on all the fun! :D
-
:D Yer Beck`s wel good !!
Ultimate sickner.........2 Of my mates play in a Beach Boys tribute band called "The Beached Boys" They were asked to go in & record with Jeff on his latest album. They spent 12 hours in a recording studio with him !!!!
My mate who plays guitar stated. "I saw him do things with an unplugged strat i`ve never seen before. I S**t you not he made that guitar sound like a keyboard & it wasn`t even plugged in ! "
And the B**stards didn`t ask me to go with `em to the studio !!!!!

Iv'e wanted to see Beck for over 20 years and always managed to miss him (this time around cos I as usual have no money). though I do have a camcorder recording of his annivercery gig from a few years ago.
To me Beck is proves that it is possible to have both technique and melody at the same time, hence my dissmissal of a certain twin necked widdler a couple of months ago. I hust whish that I could have had the intellegence to use Mr Beck as proof of my point.
There was a great documentry a few months ago (BBC 4) about British blues of the 60s, and the band had amongst others, Van Morrison, Stevie Winwood (a very underrated guitarist in his own right) and Jeff Beck. Lets just say it was some fu**ing band.

Great pics- he is one of those players that the more you listen to, the more you hear. Often I find something I hadn't noticed before and yet I have listened to that particular piece dozens of time. He turned up to watch a charity gig that my son played in a couple of years ago. I did not get to talk to him but I was totally stunned to see him there- watching my boy!

That has cheered up my day ;)

Been a lifelong fan since I went to my first ever gig and saw Jeff with the Yardbirds. He was amazing even then - played an Esquire straight into two Vox amplifiers - AC30 and AC100 - this was just before he switched to Marshall (used a Tone Bender on a few numbers). His tone and phrasing was so good I remember going up to the stage to see what other equipement/pedals he was using - Nope, no tricks - just him. Although I was fanatical about playing the guitar I seriously considered packing it in after seeing him.
I remember reading a quote from someone who had played in one of his bands .. "Jeff never finishes with a note until he's done something with it."
-
I saw Jeff and Buddy in Liverpool the other week.
Buddy is a class performer, a real showman
I saw Jeff back in '89 on the Guitar Shop Tour and was blown away. But this time it was better. I was 4 rows from the front ,right in front of him.
He had a white signature strat, rosewood neck with roller nut and vintage trem.
He drepresses the trem and swells the volume at the same time
As an encore he played "When you wish upon a star" - disney. Just him and the keyboard player. He played most of it using harmonics that
i never knew existed. When he stopped there was a silence before the clapping, everyone was gob smacked. A true virtuoso performance.
Have a look at www.youtube.com and search on Jeff Beck, someone has posted a phonecam version of the 'when you wish' on it.
I would also recommend you look for the 15min interview with Jeff from a BBC recording in the 70's. This surely is what the Spinal Tap character Nigel Tufnel was based on - very funny.
Also look for the videos of "Nadia" and "Cause We've Ended as Lovers"

^ Wow thanks for that!! :D

My god I'm so glad that I did!! Angels (Footsteps) on Who Else has left me completely blown away it's incredible!!

You are more than welcome! :)
But I guess the real thanks must go to Jeff for just being such an inspiration. :) I cannot stop listening to 'Suspension' from You Had It Coming at the moment. It's such a simple melody, but hauntingly beautiful.
I stand by what I said at the beginning of this thread - Jeff Beck is the best rock guitarist on the planet IMHO.

He is an amazing bloke full stop!
I'll have to check that one out March. What do you think of Angels (Footsteps)?
Stand by it mate! His musical imagination and playing are beyond compare! 8)

Live it was possibly my favourite track. Just typical Beck, stunning and definately one of may favourites from his recent output.
Love the switches between normal fingered notes and slide, a feature of Jeff's playing.
His slide playing is so expressive and like so much of what Jeff does, defies popular approach to employing such techniques.
So we are agreed.... Jeff Beck is not human?! :D

 Agreed! I can't get these new tunes out of my head and it's so good!
Like i said earlier I only had the best of album that I bought in 1996, the pump though, that was something else hearing the subtlety's of his playing. But some of this stuff I bought Sat' is leaving me speechless!
My girlfriend is a classical music teacher and freely admits to knowing nothing about the stuff I'm into. So I'm going to try some Jeff Beck and see how she reacts! Could be interesting! Watch this space March!
Oh and thanks again! I just need reminders now and again as to what to spend my CD money on!

Interesting - I found this snippit -
Virtuoso guitarist Joe Satriani claimed that if he could take a lesson from one player, it'd be Jeff Beck, saying "One of the most amazing things about Jeff is that he sounds even more like Jeff Beck today than he did before... He plays a classic guitar, doesn't use a pick, doesn't use any unusual equipment -- yet he sounds more amazing and pure with each outing."
As I said above when I saw him first I was convinced he was using some magic gear/pedal but he has this amazing feel/empathy with his guitar.

^ Thats some quote coming form someone as respected as JS!
I must go and see him live too asap!
I bought 'You Had It Coming Last Weekend'. That's a very good one. He uses beats and samples but to a very creative effect. Lot's of different time sigs' and they change within a tune. Not for the sake of it though as it all fits perfectly.
As for my new girlfriends take on it all from a classical musician/conductor/teacher. She was very honest with me. She liked Jeff Beck because it was all different to her. She thought his playing was very good and his use of time sigs other than 4/4 kept her interest. She plays percussion too so that quite important from her persepctive. Her tips to this world from her's are get away from 4/4 all the time. Use it more selctively. She says try 7/4!
Here's something from her world she said to try it's Maslanka 'A Childs Garden Of Dreams'
Anyone familiar with this one? I can't find it in the ether.

I've got it on now March!
It's everything you say!
Have you got a guitar that you use to get into this frame of mind and drift away?
He uses a roller nut on his strat doesn't he? Anyone had any experience with one?

I can get close to this tone with my black Strat (loaded with Irish Tours and a VHII). [Homer Simpson Mode]Mmmm, nice and Beck'ish! [/Homer Simpson Mode].
I had an LSR nut once but never installed - the Graph Tech nut doing a good enough job. That's the magic of Beck though. It does not have to be overly technical to have you going 'Wow!'.
-
I'm going through a Jeff Beck Purchase Peroid here, snapping up all I can get on this amazing player.
I am smitten with 'Cause We've ended as Lovers" !
Written for him by Stevie Wonder - loads of feeling and emotion.
Check out this live version on Youtube
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D3H1XDswBBA
Look at what he does at 4:17 - He makes a lonely bell tone. The camera pans to his face. He's got a smile on it which to me says " Yup, I pulled that one off "
-
Great stuff- I like some of the other vids there too-Blue Wind and Led Boots- sod it, it is all brilliant.
-
Yaeh, one hell of a player, a real one off. I'm always amazed by his tone- almost like some kind of wind instrument?
-
Hey Steve I got my ipod fixed when i was on the cannonball trip!
Oh man i have my control back.
Jeff beck goes on each and every time after some slag trys to cut me up! It works! Instant dissolve of anger.
I mean why would you want to argue with a skip lorry with me driving it? Some people just don't get the self preservation thing do they!
This week can only get better.
-
I kmnow what you mean-Jeff kinda draws you into his music. I first heard Blow By Blow when it was released( gulp) at the home of a switched on bass playing mate-at the time most people knew him for H* H* S*lver L*ning.
-
I remember listening to him on Jagger's "she's the boss" album and thinking that he sounded like something from the future. When I got into metal in the 80's the sound did not come of a real shock....maybe it was JB's fault
-
I am just listening to Metal Fatigue by Allan Holdsworth, funny, us Brit's do not champion our guitar virtuosos anymore (I include Beck here). I love Vai and I like the fact he is succesful, but listening AH I have to ask myself why is AH not the superstar..
-
I just watched that youtube video of "Cause we've ended as lovers", how the hell does he make the first bell like noise?! It doesnt sound like guitar at all :o
-
Just listening to JB do "Where were you" - absolutely peerless, astounding, not his fast flashy stuff, but his touch, vibrato and volume control is breathtaking

Good point Liam!
Eddie Van Halen tried to promote AH years ago. But found he didn't quite believe in himself enough. In the end he said 'there's only so much you can do for people' Plus he was way too inaccessible for a lot of people. But I like it!

That's another thing about Jeff Beck. He try's to fool peoples ears so they wonder what's making that sound!

I was at my girlfriend's mum's house over the weekend. I went into a local music shop and found a book of AH music and tab that seemed to have been there for years it's called 'searching for the uncommon chord". AH's account is different: he wanted EVH to produce an album but he got caught up in an VH Tour, so he assigned Ted Templeman to the task...they got a shitety studio and fell down the record company list of priorities. Like a good Yorkshireman AH just carried on with his craft.
After living a year in California and loving it. I'd swap with AH anyday plus he plays the old geetar like the devil.
-
I saw him in Las Vegas last night, see other thread!!
-
AH is a great craftsman, but getting back to Jeff Beck; I only saw him play live once, it was 1976 in NY I was front row center stage, I had Blow by Blow, and Beck Ola', and knew his work with the Yardbirds too. However, records can not prepare you for what your ears and eyes wittness. Jeff Beck is absolutely Brilliant. I do think there is some alien DNA in him.

Sounds like a good story. There's always different takes on these rumours.
Move out here!! You can pretty much do what you like and still make a truck load of money. 8)
