Picked this 7 string hardtail up from the states recently. Not a fan of the 70's George and Mildred curtain colour scheme on it one bit! What's the best way to remove the finish? Burn it off? It's got some more crazy swirl stuff on the headstock too.

Heat gun works amazingly, just let it melt the paint/lacquer and then scr@pe it off with a cabinet scr@per.

Sandpaper is good, steel wool is good too, but I prefer sanding, and that is handsanding with sandpaper. Start with a low number grit, which will strip the paint quicker, and as the wood is shown, use a higher grit to smooth out the rougher spots from the earlier sanding. This will insure better paint coverage, and minimize sanding later during the paint process. I am in the process of redoing a Jackson "V" for a friend now. Not easy, and time comnsuming, but it is worth it in the long run.

Disassemble it completely
Heat gun and cabinet scr@per/ chisel if you are feeling brave
Finish with abrasive papers

Note: burning it off and using a heat gun aren't the same.

Or sell it and buy another one, swirl finishes are pretty collectable.

Looks like someone barfed on it after too much beer and curry and then stirred through it with his hands.
Plug in that hot air gun!

I normally use a chemical paint stripper like NitroMors to get the bulk of the finish off. I find it does a better job of nooks and crevices than i've been able to get with sandpaper. Never tried a heatgun...
Just another option...
