Title: On a Les Paul Standard, 'Stormy Mondays' sound like ...
Post by: Fourth Feline on July 13, 2006, 02:27:20 PM
Hi folks,

I have just fitted my first set of BKPs, a calibrated set of Alnico II 'Stormy Mondays'. In case any one is wondering what they sound like (played clean in a Les Paul) - I would say like B.B.King or early Peter Green. If you really dig into the treble, they still stay sweet and not spiky. For the sound of Peter Green's original Les Paul (as later owned by Gary Moore) - get the 4 conductor wiring and a tone pot from tim which has a built in push pull switch.
With the switch off (pot in standard position) it sounds very  B.B.king, with the switch pulled up (pickups out  of phase with each other) you have that magic Peter Green sound when the toggle switch is in the middle position.

I have not used them for high gain yet, as I do not usually play that style.

If anybody has used them with high gain, I would be curious as to how they sound - as  I do not currently have access to a rehersal room etc.

All in all they are warm, sweet, and detailed. I can even hear the fret scr@pe against the strings slightly when applying vibrato, which to an expressive clean player is tone heaven.

When I can afford it I am thinking of perhaps 'Mules' in my S.G. for subtle contrast . Comments appreciated !

You need Riff Raffs in your SG.  My '65 Epi reissue SG sounds killer with them - awesome tone.

Thanks for the recommendation !

By the way, does the name 'Twinfan' mean that we share an affection for the Fender (evil) twin ?

Thanx for the mini-review! :)

Any chance you can make a clip of your new setup?

I'm afraid not - it's a reflection of my love of v-twin motorcycles, namely Ducatis  :)
