We did some new photos for our updated press kit last night, and here are some candids taken while we rehearsed after the shoot:

Is that a Music Man humbucker in there? (sacrilege!)

I resisted mentioning that (for a while) though I see the Ric bridge/tail piece has also bit the dust (christ I really am getting sadder as the years go on).
I too love the snakeskin finish on the guitar (and think the Ric bass would look cool with a similar finish).

It is my 74 Rick that I lent to Ben for a bit. I got it many years ago (1982 I think), with no pickups on it (the guy who sold it took the pickups to put on his Jazz Bass).
It is a transition model as it has the checkerboard binding, but the smaller 'rounded corner' triangular inlays. The neck pickup is a vintage reissue Rickenbacker Toaster top and the bridge is a SD basslines Music Man. It has a very old active tone circuit (just bass and treble), and has a Schaller bridge because the Rickenbacker one is unstable and loses a lot of the sound! If you saw the back you would also see a battery compartment, and 4 holes which were there from the screws of Jazz Bass pickup that was in the bridge position one time. It has been fretless for a while, but now has 6100 frets and no lacquer on the fingerboard.
Last but not least, it has Scalar bass strings - but don't bother trying to find these as I bought the last dozen sets that Dean had! They are the best bass strings Ihave ever used. He now has Snake Oil Bass strings, but I am not sure if they are the same - I should probably try a set to see (http://www.sobstrings.net)
btw, it really does sound great - listen to a couple of Ben's demos (though he had a flat battery in it and was only using the passive output!).

I chopped the quote a bit, theres just something about the sound of a ric bass that nothing else gets close to so I pay too much attention. Same as those people who mess about with their Wal basses, I just prefer the sound of the original (well the vast majority of the time anyway).
I have often thought that a bound tele would look the business with chequerboard binding instead of the standard.
