Title: What screen resolution do you all use on your monitors?
Post by: FELINEGUITARS on July 14, 2006, 01:42:52 PM
I am looking at a redesign for our website http://felineguitars.com/ and was discussing ideal screen width so that people don't have to scroll sideways to see the images on our site

I was surprised to find that apparently a lot of folks still use 800 x 600 pixel screen resolution (and a few actually have old computers and use 640 x480 pixels.)

Now I know that a lot of you guys will have up to date computers and will probably be using 1024 x 768 or larger but i wanted to get an idea of the proportions of each, so that we may design our website tobe easy to use.

This may be info that Ol already knows from his admin stats!!

Thanks in advance....

I use 1280x1024 but thats my preference, but I have a separate video card that can cope with that res. If someone's using the video adapter on the motherboard and/or using a smaller TFT monitor, they may be limited to 1024x768 or less.

1024x768 is a good resolution to work to though IMO.

Apparently I'm using 1680x1050
Thats sounds huge, although I'm quite ignorant of these things. I've got a 20inch widescreen iMac though 8) and I'm watching an A-Team DVD on the screen  as I'm typing (its not as good as I remember it!)

I use 1280x1024 or something like that on my personal computer, but I'm currently on the old family computer with a monitor that can't really display anything bigger than old 800x600 since it's a very old dull CRT. I hate having to design Shredaholic.com with 800 x 600 browsers taken into account as it really dampens the amount that one can be creative with the site.

Hi Jonathan, most of the time I use 1280x1024, but at work I have 1280x2048!  I need to get an extra monitor for home too!

Main box = 1280x1024@85Hz - I would use higher, but then the refresh rate has to be lower, and flickery screens (well, flickery to me.  The wife can't see the flicker for some reason) give me a headache.
Laptop = 1600x1200@60Hz (TFT though, so no scanline flicker)  8)

for my main workspace i have 2560x1024

but when i'm building websites i always change between my other workspaces, usually all set to the other settings

(double screen though)

Edit....

when i'm building websites i usually aim for 1024x768 resolution, as then if they have it bigger than that, it will just sit in the middle of the screen and will focus the eye a lot better .... just a thought

1360x768 widescreen. the videocard supports bigger, but the TV doesn't.

320x240
1024x768
1280x1024

...depending on which machine i'm using at the time.

To be honest it shouldn't matter though.  Find (or code) a true liquid layout that degrades well and you needn't worry what resolution people are running.  The browser will take care of it.

Check out:  http://www.maxdesign.com.au/presentation/liquid/   for an example
