A poor guitar, even with the most select upgrades, is never going to PLAY better after a proper setup (which may not do too much if it's not good to start with). Sad thing is, you usually get what you pay for. I guess it all depends on the neck with an acrylic guitar, but your suspicions are probably right.

When I went to see Queen + Paul Rodgers (as close as us youngsters can get to Queen, and was better than expected - Paul pwns) both Brian May and Paul used acrylic guitars for Crazy Little Thing Called Love...

I didn't see what make they were, but they sounded really good. One was red, and one was yellow and they were quite strangely shaped. Probably cost a fair bit - more than us mere mortals can manage.

yes, i suppose you'd have to throw everything away except the body and some of the other plastic parts, and start again from that with a new neck and electronics. though i must admit i'm curious because of its non-traditionalness.

its too bad the one i'd be interested the most in (the V) looks the worst from all, even if it sill rules. the paul and strat are perhaps the most striking.

i did some research. acrylic is said to have a warm tone with lots of sustain... although others say it has no tone at all.

theres a few guys making more high quality stuff, for example, dillion guitars: http://www.dillionguitars.com/vseries/tunnel.html

i've seen a couple of Dan Armstrong (i think..) acrylic guitars... Dave Grohl uses one sometimes. My local guitar shop used to have one, you could even slide out the pickup and change it without re-wiring.

Also, metallica had a couple which were filled with liquid.. quite unusual!

The neck on the V looks pretty damn good actually.

Did they have drinking straws running into the guitars, or just beer taps ?

Rob...

Don't they weigh a feckin tonne though? I've heard that a few times, from different sources.

I'm such a complete puss when it comes to guitar weight. My next instrument might well end up being a thinline tele made of balsa.
