for those of you that followed the petre side-story in "broken leg blues" you wil lknow that i have a piece of bone in my knee from the back of my knee-cap when i twisted my knee at download. Just a heads up to say i did it to the other leg and i now have a piece of bone in each knee :) . I now have little patience left with whatever powers that be. I mean ok, i got a pen i nmy eye and had 2 operations on it. After a few weeks, i laughed that one off. Then my knee happened.. i was scared, a little peeved, but after i found out the problem, hey its all fun and games. but now this.
anyway this is not a plea for attention.. or wanting to hear other peoples experiences ( although i know theres alot..... ALOT) as ive heard pretty much everyones (at least i hope, more injuries would only strengthen my BKP curse hypothesis)
what i need is IDEAS :o
Basically i aint gonna be so mobile for the next 3 weeks and therefore need some ideas to keep me occupied for extended periods of time.
Firstly i need non-guitar related ideas. I got a fair amount of video-games, but other than that im a little lost :?
Mainly tho, i need ways to get weeks of fun out of my guitar. anybody got any good licks/excersises i can learn or any ideas on what music theory to go over.
I know a few scales in 'box' formation but not across the whole fretboard.
I usually learn my fav band songs and such but usually have little willpower to learn them inside-out.
My playing is sloppy :(
Thanks loads! Id much rather ask here than go on some pre-made site as i have so little enthusiasm to do what they say and usualy dont focus on my style of playing. so any ideas to improe my palying or any other non-guitar ideas will be much appreciated thanks!!

Sorry to hear.
I have more problems/issues here right now than could begin to mention (let alone write book on).
Being somewhat immoblie with time on hands can be excellent for better guitar time but can also slip into easy 'laziness' and become daytime TV whore or summit.
Do not own but have seen Petrucci DVD on playing and is VERY good, worth the bucks to get and use IMO. Not a Pet lover but although he is very technical his style of teaching is good and has some very good exercises etc. that truly can make improvement easy.
I too tend to learn songs of others and get bored easy.
Dunno your circumstances but a small recording unit (with scope for tweaking) is also useful/a blast.
I bought a M-Audio Black Box (£99) that once upgraded for ver.2 software is darn amazing for money, easy to use and v.easy to record with. It is soooo easy/fast to get around it really aids your playing to be able to listen to yourself in good quality recordings.
Good Luck!

Hi Guys - The 13 week-no-life-having-2+stone in weight-losin'-mothertruckin'-champion of boredom here!!!!!
It's DAVE!
My advice:
1) "Speed Mechanics For Lead Guitar" by Troy Stetina - This book + CD is wonderful in content and value. Each exercise really works and the pace is perfect. This book is the key to shred.
http://www.musicroom.com/se/ID_No/02063/details.html
2) Masturbation - "Solo Touch Masturbation Stories, Techniques - Fact and Fantasy" - These exercises cut through the boredom and can really improve your technique and fluidity.

[/list:u]
Good luck mastering these skills - both can truly entertain and amaze a crowd when performed correctly in front of an audience!

Start Smoking.
That'll put and end to all that physical activity, and safeguard your knees for the future.
-
Sometimes this works for me (other times not).
Name 4 or 5 things that you have intended doing but have not had the time to do.
In my case when I had pneumonia a few years ago it was;
Improving my drawing and painting
Writing a bit of code to decrypt some games protected with Securom
Start playing guitar again
Oh yeah Winona Ryder featured quite high on my list but she just never got the atention she deserved
(3 out of 4 where successful so I can't complain)
When you are ill / injured it helps if the things you choose are cost effective.

I'm thinking of starting smoking just so as I can give it up !
Should I start on patches or gum and then work up ?

awesome the petrucci dvd sounds pretty good coz i love his playing (not a fanboy tho! infact i dont really like his DT stuff but his solo album is awesome). Plus that book and dvd looks good you mentioned dave.
And YES some goals to set sounds perfect.
Dakine, i do have a recording dealio and a mic, but my amp is poor and sounds cr@p when recorded. Therefore im tempted by a POD...

lol thats the thing... im physically inactive enough WITHOUt smoking. I get these injuries doing such innocent things. This one was turning to sit on my bed :x
anyway, just an update for all those interested.. im on crutches and have this big blue splint thing to keep my leg straight.. i think ive torn a tendon in my knee.
Time to invest in some music dvd's/books !
Thanks guys!

i think ive torn a tendon in my knee.
Thats often viewed as being worse than a bone break.
Rob...
-
Rob's right, it is often viewed that way - but having done neither, I wouldn't know :P
-
Could be worse, could be a vintage/fave axe 'headstock break' EEK!

seconded on that book, it's great.
oh, and sorry to hear that, petre. Worst I've ever done is sprain my ankle, but since I'm a member here, i'm sure to get a lot worse pretty quick...
-
At this rate, I'm expecting to burn my fingers off when installing my pickups (when me scratchplate gets delivered at last)

yea, shat my pants when i realised all my symptoms were classic of a torn tendon, altho when i went back to the hospital today, they steered away from the tendon idea, and now a little swelling has gone i can raise my leg against gravity and stuff. They think its another piece of bone chipped off, but this time the swelling is blood as opposed to 'water' . scary stuff but looks like they are going to poke around in both knees in the same operation. I really am getting my parents taxes back in NHS funds
Thanks guys, ive yet to order any books or dvd's yet, but ill certainly get to it tonight. I cant find the Petrucci dvd in PAL anywhere tho :(

If you are going to view it via a PC then look at the program AnyDVD by Slysoft as it allows you to play any region DVDs (anlond with several other interesting features ;) )
If it's via TV then most players these days are multi region (as long as your TV copes with PAL & 50Hz you should be fine).
As for knees take it easy even after they initally appear to have healed, I screwed up mine skiing and skateboarding and I still (27 years later) suffer really badly during the winter (though fish oil helped a lot last winter). They also suffer from hyperextension (they bend backwards), though not as much as my left elbow (it dosn't lock at all).

As painful as it may be, that elbow thing probably looks immensely cool - especially after a few glasses of whisky :drink:

It's a great gross out in the pub, and it was also useful when I used to do akido as the elbow dosn't lock at all, when I had an armlock applied I just used to get up and wanter around the mat ;)
It hurt at the time though (and nearly lost mart of arm because of a drunk doctor).

A drunk doctor? Did you get him struck off?

A drunk doctor? Did you get him struck off?
I was only a kid at the time (10 or 11)
I was at the local equivalent of the scouts and went over a vaulting horse head first and landed with a straightened left arm, needless to say the weakest point was my elbow and it got smashed.
The leaders (who should NOT have been reaching gymnastics) took me to their doctor, who declared that there was nothing wrong because I could move my fingers, bend my wrist and I wasn't showing any signs of pain. Stating that I should go home and rest for a couple of days (and even supplied my parents with a morphine suppositry to help me settle)
Anyway my parents took me to the childrens hospital anyway (they had never liked that doctor), who declared that my elbow was shagged. Anyway the consultant told my parents thet where right to bring me down as I would have lost my arm from the elbow if they had listened to the GP.
Anyway I got 8 weeks off school as they could not plaster the arm and it would be too easily damaged for me to be allowed out (it was boring).
Anyway the club offered my parents 5 pounds compensation if they could produce a certificate proving that I had been injured. Unfortunitely my school never returned the medical cert and they where never paid anything.
In those days you simply didn't hold doctors (or church organisations) to account over their behavour (my how things have changed). Still my arm works now and I can gross people out ;)

One of my local 'so called' music stores has the Petrucci DVD on the shelf.
, wonder if it's NTSC.
Don't most dvd players here now play any region also? (please don't burn me, have been away 8+years but thought most did).
-
ah yes, i reckon ill get the dvd on import then and then get a multi-region prog for my comp
and kilby, that club sounds wack :? . Nowadays you woulda been able to sue for stupidly large amounts of money... but i dont really agree with that. If its something malicious im all for getting compensation, but i have a "shite happens" attitude. Thats why i dont sue when i trip over loose paving slabs  .
But damn man... its kinda cool to have some "war scars". My false lens actually makes my eye like a cats eye (where they pupil goes silvery when light reflects off it) which impresses the ladies lol.
Cheers guys

COOL.... I've got that "Cats Eye" chit going on as well!
Works best over a candle lit meal... she can occassionally see the candle flicker reflected inside my eyes!
"Look into my eyes babe and see the fire burning in my soul (loins) for you"...
We both be bionic lens having mothers!

This sounds like the boat scene in Jaws
