Title: Pre-Eq in your live setup
Post by: lepersmeesa on July 25, 2006, 11:05:59 AM
I was just wondering if anyone uses a Pre- Eq in their live setup, and if so what product.

I have been advised to get a pre-eq to clean up the muddy mids and to generally just clean the sound a little so I was wondering how people have found using pre-eqs.

Cheers

If you have an effects loop, use the EQ in there (this makes it after pre-amp and before power amp).  You can then tailor your tone much better and you won't get a fizzy front end.  I've used a 7-band EQ pedal in the effects loop and it can make a big difference to the tone you get out, and I'll be trying it out again tonight to boost the mids on my solo sound.

I dont have a effects loop in my current amp so I just make do by putting it inline with the input signal.

But to agree with twin fan. Deffinately worth while investment.

Just bought an MXR 10 band EQ and DEF. worth the moolah!
I put it in the ENGL's effects loop, but is cool in front too.
The 'tweakability' is def. woth it IMO.
Next on list is a Decimator to tame the ENGL's defiant roar on quieter moments

Iīve been playing 3 different amps/preamps lately. First up was a JMP-1, than a modded JMP-1 and today a got a modded SL-X head. This is within 2 months...

Anyways. For a long time I was playing Pod XT Live as a preamp with my EL34 power amp. Sounded ok and than I bought a Samson 15 band rack EQ. My Pod sounded great! Same think with my first JMP-1. Did put the EQ in the loop. The EQ did a HUGE difference. My second JMP-1 also needed the EQ n the loop.

Today I thought I wouldnīt need my EQ or my TS-9 anymore. Wrong. My EQ is the think that makes my sound. Without it my sound is thin and donīt cut through as good.
I use my EQ to boost the mid. I did try to put the EQ before the preamp on my second JMP-1 but it sounded like I was playing in a can or soemthing.
Iīm about to buy my self the MXR M108 EQ pedal to use as a midboost infront of the preamp. Still gonna keep the EQ in the loop. The EQ pedal might replace my TS-9. Might...

I think if You want more gain than You should put the EQ before the repamp. If not, put it in the loop. Donīt buy a rack EQ and put it before the preamp, use a pedal for that.
