I am now in confusion as to which Ibanez guitar i want to get.
The Ibanez Prestige RG1570 was looking strong favourite, but it has a middle pickup which i do not want, and if i do get it i will be changing the pickups to more expensive Bare Knuckle ones and this will set me back even more money than the guitar itself would, because the guitar itself is pushing my budget to the limit.
The new guitar in the running is the less expensive and non-prestige RGT42DXFM, it has a 5pc neck whereas the RG1570 has a 3pc, it also looks a lot better with a flamed maple top, it is mahogany which is my prefered wood, it is walnut neck-thru which is also a great feature, great two-tone inlays, and only 2 humbuckers.
However the down fall is that it is made in Korea not in Japan where the prestige guitars are made, also it has an Edge Pro II not an original Edge Pro, though i don't think it will make much difference, also it is not an original wizard neck i don't think, and it is a painted neck which is not as good as a bare wood kind of one like the RG1570 if you know what i mean.
What i'm asking really is (if you know), how much difference will this guitar being made in Korea make in terms of playability and sound?
Also how much difference will the cheaper Edge pro II and Wizard II neck make?
Sorry for the essay!

get the 570/1570. remove the middle pickup if it annoys you that much, but it's no contest. In my opinion.
-
At least you have full choice of the range, unlike me who has killed off almost all choice by my severe hatred of floyd roses - seems like all Ibanez can do "well"
-
Removing the middle pickup will make it look ugly, it also defies some of the point of buying a guitar with the middle pickup in the first place.
Edit: More replies please! :D
-
Of course we could just wait and see which guitar you'll want next week

ok, just get the 570/1570 and keep the middle pickup.
or try to get a second hand rg520 (i think that's the model)- there's bound to be some old rg's with twin buckers.
Seriously, the japanese rg's pwn the korean ones.
degoey: the rga's have no floyds and rock.
-

Scroll down and there is a 520 for £299..If I had £299 I would have it in a shot. JUST DO IT.
-
Agreed - get that RG520. Looks great!
I've got a few early RGs and they knock socks off the new ones.
-
get the 520. assuming it's not snapped in two or something.

I looked at that but then turned my nose up at it, i really didn't think it looked too great, but what do i know!
What about the RG550 there, is that better or worse.
Also, i don't know what to look out for on used guitars, i mean they could be really cr@ppy, especially at such a low price like that, i would have thought it would be a lot more.
-
Yep, the 550 looks good too. They're both made in Japan, and are the equivalent of the Prestige range made today. You can't go wrong with a Japanese Ibanez.
-
But are the korean ones that bad? I mean how much difference will it actually make?
And since it will be used it won't be at it's peak of performance.
-
the guys at Coda are fantastic! Low prices are there thing!.
It will be well set up and ready to go(Except for Calibrated Warpigs  )
-
You wont pick up a new one of that quality or for such amazing value.
-
The Korean ones will be fine for what you want so it's up to you.
New - lower spec, cheaper parts used (bridge/woods/pickups), cheaper "feel",
Used - higher spec, better components, better sound and "feel"
-
Well i have an Epiphone Les Paul Special II which i picked up for £79 from Coda, so anything will feel better than this i think!
Also if it is used, surely the components will be all cr@pped up by now, i don't know how old it is.
Edit: here is a pic of the one i want to buy http://www.machinehead.co.uk/images/ibanez-jpg/rgt42dxfm-lg.jpg
-
Ok so you might have convinced me on the RG520 or RG550 a bit, but what shall i look for specifically to see if it is in good working order when i go and play these guitars? Because i have no idea really!
-
Just the usual stuff - that all the electrics work properly and that the neck is straight etc. There's nothing specific to watch out for - they're solid guitars.
-
Well, on the other hand i could just get the RG1570 :P
-

well, the 1570 has the middle pickup.
the 1550/550 has a maple fretboard + middle pickup.
and the 520 has no middle pickup.
Up to you, really.
Oh, and with regards to your post in the other thread, I didn't realise you didn't know that korean ibanezes were quite a bit worse, at least on the average model in the store. Sorry I didn't make it clearer.
:drink:
-
I know that they are not as good, but it didn't think they were as bad as people say they are, unless it's just the comparison of them to the japanese made guitars which is making them sound bad.
-
Well, about the Korean Ibanez thing: My first guitar was one of the bottom of the range Ibanez HSH things (the old version of the GRG170
I think) and the neck is really comfortable to play. It's getting a bit of fret wear now, but it's really well built and plays well too...
Obviously I don't know if they're all like that or if I was just lucky and got a good one - but I wouldn't hesitate to buy another (if I got to try it first)

That Ibanez looks gorgeous man.

it's the quality control more than anything. If you can get to try like 10 in a row head to head, and pick the best one, then it might be worth it (assuming you're talking about the s470, as it has a decent trem).
But i wouldn't buy one sight-unseen.
-
You have to watch the trems on the low end Ibanez guitars - some of them are very poor quality. The pickups are pretty nasty on them too.

I agree that some may well be that way, but mine isn't :P
I wouldn't say the pickups are nasty, they're fairly nice - however I haven't put my BKs in yet, so I may take that statement back at a later date :drink:
-
ooo, those prestige necks are way nice. especialy if they have a wizard profile and bit of meat on the back.
personaly, i'd strip them down to the wood, cos they feel way better that way.
just make sure they're japan made.
-
Ok, well i have decided at the end of this, that i will go with my original choice of Prestige RG1570, i have been wanting this guitar for months and havn't changed my mind, surprisingly! So i think this is the guitar for me. Though i need to get a job first to raise some money, first though i need to get a new amp, a luckily a birthday is coming up so that is done with. Guitar i'm thinking might be a christmas present.
-
I just had a huge change of heart, now i am probably getting the used Ibanez RG550, and if anyone takes it before i do there will be hell to pay, since this is pretty cheap i will be able to get this guitar soon, as in this month:)
Edit: Can someone tell me the specs of this instrument, and what year it was made in, because they do not make this guitar anymore.
I think the specs i have gathered are right:
Basswood Body
Bolt-on Neck
24 fret Wizard Neck
Maple Fretboard
HSH Random Ibanez pickups
Floyd Rose fine tune trem (i'm not sure about this could be an Edge actually)
-
I think ima buy it now, I've decided :P Just kidding, I wouldn't do that to you :)
-
Yeah ima go buy this before i change my mind again! :P
But seriously though i'm not going to change my mind, this guitar looks b-e-a-utiful. All that is left to do now is to check it out and hopefully, buy it!
-
 can you order on the site, or do you have to go there in person? 'cause it may already be gone and just not updated yet...
-
I don't know, i might ring them, if it is gone then i will be most upset!
Edit: http://www.coda-music.com/Secondhand%20Guitars/rg550.jpg
Does anyone know what year the guitar is? Most RG550's i have looked at have grey/titanium colour tremelos, but this one has a black one, not sure if you can tell by just the colour of the tremelo.
-
You need the serial number to check the year.
The serial number will be F8xxxxx, F9xxxxx, F0xxxxx, F1xxxxx to F7xxxxx for 1988 to 1997. It'll then be F98xxxxx, F99xxxxx etc for 1998 onwards.
The bridge will be an Ibanez Edge of some description, not a Floyd Rose.

What would it go to after F99xxxx? Just out of interest :P
-
F01xxxxx and F02xxxxx etc
There are always 5 digits after the year indicator, so:
1990 guitar = F012345
2000 guitar = F0012345
The number of x's in my above post is important ;)
-
Well i won't know that until i go to the shop.
-
You could ask them over the phone for it...
-
Get an RGA-121 if you can live with out the whammy bar. Mahogany body with a maple cap. Five piece Prestige neck. Made in Japan and sounds damn good once you put the BKP's in it of course.
-
Also damn expensive!
-
Really?
¥120,750, thats about 600quid.
-
But i said i am on a budget, and then i said the RG1570 was at the limit of my budget, and that was £499
-
fair enough.
In the UK its probably more than that anyway. I don't hink Ibanez uk put prices on their website the same as the Japan site (and the shops give big discounts on the list price here too).
That said I'd love to try one of those archtop RGs downtuned with MMs in it!
-
Gotta love archtops!
-
Tut tut tut, i have found marks on the guitar!
They are ringed in red (sorry for the small picture) the one on the left is pretty tiny, but the one on the right i don't like, you can see bare wood and it is rather noticable.
I havn't even gone to look at it yet so by the looks of things here it might have a lot more of these scratches/dents in it.
I know it is used and that it is quite an old guitar, but still i don't like unattractive guitars, people will be like oh how did you do that one, and it will annoy me!
Edit: Now that you know where they are you can see them better on the big picture: http://www.coda-music.com/Secondhand%20Guitars/rg550.jpg
-
The one on the right almost looks like a reflection...When you go there, you may be able to use the damage to beat them down on price a bit...
-
I don't know, it looks like wood to me. But i will have to see when i go. Which will be after my holiday, providing it is still there by then lol!
-
Notice the same "wood" mark on the scratchplate! I think it might be lighting. E.Mail them with you questions ,they will tell you all.
-
^ That's exactly what made me think it was a reflection...
-
Thats why we're in the same club! Great minds and all that.
And Crazy Joe...without being rude , you are starting to guitar shop rather like a girl!? :D
-
 He'd never survive in our club - We're far too manly :drink: <-- and alcoholic by the looks of that
Anyway, yeah I think you're being a bit girly...So it has a few dings, they just add character :P
-
lol quiet you, i just like my guitars to be pristine and i don't like little dings because they look so out of place and it just makes the guitar look old and battered.
-
I was in a guitar shop with my GF today and we saw some relic Strats, she thought they were ok but when she saw the Jeff Beck Esquire she just couldn't understand it.
"It's dirty!"
-
I just want to get this guitar now! I don't want to have to wait 2 weeks until i go look at it, it will probably have gone by then!
It's just asking for some In Flames to be played on it!
Edit: And various other metally songs!
-
By the way i have my suspicions that it is a 2000 model, but that is not for sure.
Also i have just noticed another thing, where is the tremelo arm??
-

Probably in the box :drink:
-
get the 570/1570. remove the middle pickup if it annoys you that much, but it's no contest. In my opinion.
Much better solution... on the pickup selector switch, swap the hot wires for the neck pickup with the middle pickup. This way your bridge will remain your bridge, the next position which is normally bridge and middle will be bridge and neck, the middle will be the neck, the 2nd from the left will be the neck and middle and the left will be the middle... you only lose the bridge and middle together which is my least favorite pickup combination....
I would definitely pick a 550/570/770/1550/1570/2550/2470 over a RG42* in a heartbeat.
I'm setting up a RG 2570 for my mother's boyfriend right now.. the action is incredibly low and it has the great thin Ibanez RG neck.... I'd so like to keep that guitar!
....but be sure to go with some good BKPs in it whatever you do... or at least some Dimarzios or something else....the stock pickups are pretty bad.... I'm trying the Joe Satriani set in this one...
-
Right so i'm back from my 2 week holiday in Portugal, first i find out my brother $%ed up my computer so i had to sort that out today, finally i get it working, go to coda's website, and there is no guitar, great. :x
-
It obviously wasn't to be. It's fate's way of making you save your money for something even better! :D
-
But that was a good guitar! And at the moment no other guitars really appeal to me, apart from the Jackson RR3, but that will be cheaply made unlike the Ibanez.
-
Just look out for another RG550. Plenty crop up on the 'bay with black being the most common colour. They go for £275 to £350.
-
Yeah but Ebay ones are always to collect, they don't send them in the post, and i can't be arsed with that.
-
I've bought three RGs off eBay and they've all been sent to me no problem!
-
Well i havn't come across one i want that is sent in the post.
-
Give it time, my young padouin learner...
-
Yeah i still want this guitar, and i will get it eventually!
-
Bingo, i have found one on ebay, at the moment it is 60 odd quid! Still a long way to go though, but it is a 2000 model and has only been played for approximatley 2 hours!
