jus realised that there's only 10 days tli the a-level results are released
*bricks himself*

If I dont get into the 2nd year of 6th form I'm a bit $%ed really as I dont have anything else to do :P Should do though, the exams seemed really easy.
-
the exams seemed really easy.
oh stop showing off :P
-
If they seemed easy, that's either really or good or really bad.
I take it A2's are on the same day?
-
my teachers always said that if you found it too easy then chances are you didn't read the question right
and A2's are the same day methinks
-
I cant wait for mine
-
AS or A2 Jonesy??
-
my teachers always said that if you found it too easy then chances are you didn't read the question right

Haha thanks for that "advice" :P
I've definately passed my IT one though, we got to take as many notes as we liked into the exam and it was actually easier than the GCSE one :?

the thing i hate about IT exams is that they are never actually about IT, they are more business orientated, which has bugged me since i first started turning up for IT lessons
-
Yeah thats why its easy, I dont know much about computers other than the basic stuff really but its easy to pass so thats why I took it :D Business the actual subject is pretty hard though.
-
Just did my AS's mate
Lol ye...in my IT exam I had 2 arrange a festival thing with all these strange bands...for that reason...it was slightly enjoyable :P
-
good luck everyone!
as bainzy says, thinking it's easy can either be really good (if you're right) or really bad (you don't even know enough to know you screwed it up...).
Um.
:drink:
-
Yeah best of luck from me too- I had one a while back for work and due to pressure of work, did not study too much but I passed it thankfully.
-
I feel old :( It's been 10 years since mine came out :o
-
I'm with sifu
-
6 years since mine came out, i think...
-
I was touring Germany with my band when my results came out. I was so excited to be going that I never really studied for them! I was more interested in making sure we had enough songs down to play 5x45 minute sets.
I ended up with 2 and then to add insult to injury, the band split up - we were just not cut out to be together. The singer/guitarist and drummer were big Beatles fans and the bass player and me loved the Stones.
It was a great summer though.
-
i'm away for my results - yay!
-
Good luck lads! :D
Mine were...Hmmm!
-
What did everyone get then?!
I got a D in business, but I'm gonna retake one of the exams coz I got a B in one and an E in the other..
Didnt even get the IT exam results back, but my coursework was B and C so should be a pass anyway :D
-
i got a DE in double IT, a C in physics, a B in maths (*kicks self*) and a B in Computing (but managed to get 95% on one of the exams)
poo
-
I got A in Business, A in History, B in maths and B in Politcs.
I'm pleased with the politics grade since I only turned up to about 8 lessons this year, but disappointed with the maths - I missed out on the A by 4 marks. On the bright side, these results easily got me into Uni, so I guess I'll be in Nottingham next month!
-
Bainzy you got great results man.
My GCSE results come out next week, i'm bricking it. :(
-
Well done Brainzy- I dear not ask my son in Ireland-he is a really bright lad but is hooked on that World of Warcraft! Not holding my breath.
-
I got a B in Geography, B in History, C in Tech and E in ICT :x ...i think they forgot to take my resit into account
-
Well in Bainzy - I got a B in maths too :P although you beat me by 13 Marks, I needed 17 for the A
I did get A's in Chemistry, Physics and "Economics and Business" though :drink:
-
I got a B in Geography, B in History, C in Tech and E in ICT :x ...i think they forgot to take my resit into account
you can check if they took your resit into account by looking at the date next to the result of that part of your mark
i.e in Computing, it says on my sheet...
June 06 CPT2 Principles of ... etc. (105) 95 A
and has them for each unit, so if they didn't take your resit into account, it would start with
Jan 06 .....etc.
hope that helps[/b]
-
Jonesy - The only reason I can think of that they wouldn't take your resit into account is if you did worse than the first time round...(sorry)
-
As suspected my son's results were awful- a result of a bright kid thinking he doesn't have to work as he will wing it on the day so now he has a choice of going back to school for another year or he said he would like to join the army. I have told him the latter is not good-until Tony Blair puts his boys in the army he sure as hell aint having mine.
-
a result of a bright kid thinking he doesn't have to work as he will wing it on the day
that's been my EXACT philosophy for the last 10 years
works great, as you can tell

A in business, B in psych and art, so not bad - got me into durham in 2007 should I still want archeology & anthropology 8)
-
i got a C a D and 2 E's. LOL it's no laughing matter. (apparently)
-
Parents giving you a hard time Indy?-I gave my son a hard time for sure and hopefully he will sort himself out.

Not meaning to make you more depressed (your son may be different to me) but my parents gave me a hard time after my GCSE's, when I didn't revise, and met none of my target grades, and it didn't make the slightest bit of difference - well, this time I didn't revise, but somehow did get my target grades...
:drink:
-
^ +1 - i usually treat everything my parents say as reverse psychology, unless it ends in me getting something good :D
one method which does work is paying children for good grades, works wonders
-
Yup, that works - I've got £95 now from various people
I got paid yesterday too, so I now have £405 in total...I feel some recording gear coming on (followed by clips of my Holy Diver :drink:)
-
my dad arranged a price with all of us little 'uns
£100 for every GCSE A grade
£200 for every GCSE A* grade
£500 for every A2 A grade
so far i have £600, which was ALL spent on my old PRS tremonti
-

Nice one mate!
An Ex of mine did Archeology at Winchester. Very interesting subject. She's a primary school teacher now, as there are not a lot of jobs in Archeology. Tell me to mind my own business but I'd go for something with real prospects. I hope you don't get offended by that.
Good luck!
:D
-
All I can say is to you Indy is get serious about what you want to do!
There are so many skilled people turning up in this country for jobs and getting them!
-

I didnt revise for my GCSE's hardly at all and passed all of em (Except RE which isnt even a real subject, and besides, I'm not religious so I dont care :D).. AS Levels are a bit harder though, I just hope I can re take one of the business exams to get a better grade, coz the other ones a B which is pretty good..
-
I didn't do much at school in exams but made up for it at college. I did a 3 year Toolmaking day release course and came out of the with some Credits. I had to learn all my maths that I never did at school in a few weeks really. Trig and all the scary stuff. I can't remember any of it now as I don't use it. My lecturer said don't worry son we get lads like you all the time. If you keep the learning part of you mind always open then you can learn what you like. That's why we're all here!
What I have got from my school days though is my very first plectrum! A Jim Dunlop .60mm from 1980! I used coins before that as I didn't even know what one was!

Yeah I hear you guys and I shall have to resort to promising the mercenary sod some cash. My eldest son did amazingly well with little effort as he was , apart from being a superb singer and keyboard player) a genius at computers and took the view that whatever they taught you at school and college regarding IT, was already out of date in the real world and in spite of some terrible decisions in his personal life, whe has always worked and has done ok(now lives in the USA).His brother, however, is perhaps brighter in terms of outright intellect though is bone idle and knows it all-good natured but no drive. If it has to be bribary then so be it but he knows exactly what I think of his efforts. He knows that I love him to bits and he knows too that I am not a nag so to his credit, he does recognize that when I do have a go at him something must be up.
-
situation with me and my elder brother:
we are both amazing at computers, yet neither of us have ANY respect for ICT or Business teachers, as - in both our words -
"If they were any good at their subject, they'd have a job in it"
therefore ... no need to listen to ICT teacher, no need to turn up on time and no need to revise for exams
hence, the bone idle phase of being a teenager
:D
not sure quite where i was going with this... must be the caffeine in my system ... ah well, back to work :D
-
Trouble is CJ, it is my elder son who is the genius at computers. My younger one isn't ( well not to the same extent) and he is the problem one at the moment.Motivating him is a real issue-lovely boy but he hasn't a clue.He is very bright so the potential for mischief is great.

Cheers! Well I'm actually not that interested in the archeology side of it - you just have to look at it a bit for a year in order to do anthropology. But I'm taking an art foundation degree in my gap year, so I might end up declining Durham anyway.
And CJ, if only I'd had those incentives - everyone knows "your own satisfaction" means nothing. I need money! Graaah :x [/quote]
-
CJ (and others)
School is a difficult one :
Firstly :
Having had the misfortune in the past to be a computer tech in a school I can safely say that the vast majority of ICT (as they have re-christened the subject) are clueless. They also feel very threatened by anybody who does know their subject (on the whole). After two years I walked out and within 4 weeks and had trebled my pay (fixing dealing room equipment).
However :
You also have to play the game, whether it's school (or work), you have to appear interested, do what you have to do and then a bit extra (it helps you make your point, believe me). Otherwise you will fail because you will either, get bored and do nothing or annoy those in authority and never do anything right in their eyes (and therefore getting poor marks or undue critisism) eventually causing you to give up.
IT is for those who may be able to make the grade
ICT is for those who can't manage in the real world
90% of the jobs listed as ICT insist on a teaching qualification no matter what the post is, it's a little group as bad as masons and ex MPs looking after each other.
Secondly :
In the UK (can't speak for other countrys) is the only industry where success is punished with additional tasks, responsabilitys and tighter deadlines. If you watched the "IT Crowd" on Channel 4 it hit the nail on the head when the cleaners are more likely to be rewarded for a successful system roll out before IT dept who actually carried out the work.
IT are often the dumping ground for tasks that nobody else want to do. IT depts I have worked in have been told to fix broken toilets, repair vending machines or call the vending company when a machine ran out of coffee. Senior managers view the IT dept as being obstructive when refusing to do these tasks. (me unhelpful ? never ;) )
Whats the point ? :
Pieces of paper, are much useful more useful than you currently know.
Why ?
Because they are your escape route when you lose interest (and eventually you will lose interest), you can then change career to something less stressful (like teaching ?) or more just something you enjoy.
Without those bits of paper it's immensely hard to change career. I regularly clock up 140 -> 150 hours every fortnight and it wears you down eventually (age dosn't help either :( )
Rob...
PS
When I was at school the careers teacher asked me what I wanted to be and when I said an electrician he laughed at me and said I was too stupid and that I'd be sweeping factory floors for the rest of my life.
I did go back a few years ago (when I was Head of Networks for a newspaper group) to see if we could take on some kids in for their 5th form work experiance week, after a while he realised who I was and he went very quiet indeed and that felt good.
-

The primary school I went to before I moved down here was a disgrace. In my 2nd or 3rd year there, when I was about 7, my teacher came out into the playground to have a word with my mum. I'm not sure of the exact words she used, but she basically told her that I would end up as a road sweeper, and then realising my error I'd go into adult education in later life...
I'd like to wave my AS results under her nose
-
^ thas better than being told you're going to get amazing results, i was predicted As and A*s for all my GCSEs, even German, and i only ended up with 6 As, which not only made my teachers look stupid, it really pissed me off cos i was expecting higher
-
 I was predicted the same, and got 2 A*s, 1 A and the rest B's and C's - but I did no revision, so I was expecting exactly what I got (and had accepted it before hand) :drink:
-
i didn't do any revision, although i didn't turn up for half the lessons either, which might have been the reason for my E in German
-
I got told that I'd never to uni when I got expelled from school (during my A levels). Luckily my old school accepted me back (I left it to go to the one I got expelled from) although I was a year below all my mates that I left behind.
Then I passed my A Level and got a degree which was apparently the second hardest in the country (in terms of workload) - or at least that's what they told us when we got there. I'd love to go back and wave my degree certificate under the old headmasters nose. He retired the year before I graduated unfortunately
Have you lot decided on what you're all doing yet?
-
I feel old :( It's been 10 years since mine came out :o
it's only been about 5 since mine.. muahaha :P
ToneMonkey im studying at Leeds College of Music, after a carear change from Network Administration. always got that to fall back onto but I dont think it's for me. Im far more interested in music.
-
As suspected my son's results were awful- a result of a bright kid thinking he doesn't have to work as he will wing it on the day.
Sounds familiar
I did terrible in my GCSEs but it's not the end of the world - made me sit up and realise that I had to start applying myself. I did a BTeC First Diploma in Engineering rather than resit GCSEs - it was much more interesting.
In the end it cost me a year, no big deal really.

Hey cool, my mate Niczy goes there, you might know him. He has a tendency to stick out in a crowd, he's heavily into metal and looks rather unkempt
-
Remember to play the game as Kilby says. Office environments are full of backstabbers trying to gain promotion. A's are great to have and so is uni but don't make the mistake of thinking everything will just fall in your lap 'cos life isn't like that!
Good luck in what ever you choose!
:)
-
Anyone else but me today? haven't heard much
-
i went in to see how my students had done... pretty damn good if i do say so myself
-
I do feel sorry for teachers at junior and senior school levels. At least at University (hmm, at least at Oxford and at least in my limited experience, I should have said!), the majority of people in your class actually WANT to know what you're trying to teach them!
Roo

I just got my results, got ABC and got into my first choice Leeds uni, I'm well chuffed :D
-
Lol, well done Tom.
I got D D E, if General studies counts, I get another E :D
(I'm a dumbass)

yeah. :)
well done to everyone who got results. :)

AABC, although the C is in chemistry which I'm dropping, and I still have Further Maths to do, which by judging from my maths results will also be an A...
Which'll leave me with AAAB, which does me perfectly for Aeronautical Engineering at Southampton hopefully. (Applying this year).
I did 6 modules in maths this year, got A in all of them cept 1 which was 3 marks out. They took the top 3 grades and turned that into a maths AS, and left me with the last 3 to either turn into an A2, or to retake, improve them a bit, and then turn them into an A2, but since its allready an A overall, there's no point. Will probably end up retaking the module I didn't get an A in anyway, just for ego.
-
I nearly did Naval Archetecture at Southampton. Went to the open day, looked around the department and then got rather drunk at a nice place just off campus, I think it had 'Pig' in the name.
If you need a hand with anything when you get there (because it doesn't matter how good at maths you are, turbomachinary and fluid dynamics are a right royal pain in the arse :D) then drop me a PM and I'll see if I still remeber any of it.

Awesome man!
Appreciate it - And yeah I know, I only see the A levels and all my current knowledge as a tool to get into the uni of my choice. Once I get there, I expect everything I learn will be new hopefully.
Fluid Mechanics sounds like fun ;)
If I remember right, I was told Southampton is the best in the world for Naval engineering/architecture. I would have thought Portsmouth would have been better, what with the MASSIVE shipyard and stuff.
-

I think that's what I got!
Haha, we're not very good symbols of Aylesbury Grammar School's high-class output are we?
-
And similar subject I believe. History, Pol, Comms
To be fair, I failed one module in each subject (U) and the rest were B's and C's. My AS levels were worse marks in general, but better grades.
I undertook each exam in complete honesty, I did not prey upon my short term recollection, what I wrote is what I know
(I didn't revise )
-
Will is the 'Pol' Government and Politics?
I started that but dropped out- two of my mates who carried on got U and D respectively because the teacher was so shoite!
-
Yarp, teachers are alright. Its a bit of a bollucks subject though. Knowing how things should work, how they are taken advantage of, and how they don't work, compare and contrast between US and UK systems.
Basic policies covered, no opinion related / personal conclusion encouraged. I thought politics was about what the people want, not teaching 16-18yr olds on how to be career politicians without any view of the real world.
-
Yeah, I didn't revise either; although that's not really an excuse for doing badly at school. The fact that I hardly went in for 6th form is a good excuse
-

thats mine too
i was CCDE, pretty much C's all the way through my school life.... and thats why i teach;)
-
haha and mine, came out with 2 C's in IT and business studies in the end and got into an allright uni.. its kinda annoying because if I worked harder in Business in year 1 I would've got at least a B as I got all Bs in my stuff for year 2 but the AS year dragged it down.
-

BCD for me. Spent quite a lot of time at home alone with the (then) girlfriend when I should have been in school.

It isn't :(
-

That seems to be the general concensus, so I assume it's outrageously difficult, and long winded mathematical giberish.
Which is the exact kind of thing i love lol
-
I got AAAB at AS level. That's A's in Maths, Music and Music Tech. B in Physics, 6 marks off :x should be able to pull it up and then i'm set for A2's. Hopefully go on to Surrey on the Tonmeister course in 2009.
Well done everyone else.
