Hi guys,
Just thought I could get some advice of here as there seems to be some very on it people on here.
I have just bought my new gear which is
Hiwatt 100 Hi-gain with 4x12 celestion loaded cab(all the new stuff)
Electro harmonix Metal muff pedal
Fender Telecaster 72 Deluxe re issue
I got the fender yesterday. Its a great guitar but the pickups are.....RUBBISH!
Thought im not bothered coz it was always the plan to put the Bare knuckles in.
I use the clean channel on the hiwatt as Its just amazing and use the metal muff with the gain on 2 through the clean channel which gives me a kind of Mesa rec sound.
Im haivng the guitar setup next week for 10s or 11s guage strings and my tuning is normal E.
So what do I want from my pickup? Well the sound I desire is almost clean. So when you hit hard on the strings you get distortion, but if you play soft you get almost clean. Also just loads of clarity for open chords where you can hear every note.
this will sound dumb,...like a modern AC/DC haha.
Clean tone is also very important. I use the bridge pickup for clean and the hiwatt has in alot of people opinion one of the best clean tones out there so need a pickup that will match it. For rock sound, and also a little blues.
The musaaak I play is a kind of foo figthers style but the riffs are more...down picking open hard kinda shite haha,,,so hard to explain!
So if you guys have any ideas please do tell! im really stuck.
By the way before anyone asks, The higain on the Hiwatt is Rubbish so i dont use it. I only got it coz the clean is the same as the custom but the custom was more money so the gain is just an extra. It will hopefully be sent off to hiwatt in a few weeks so they can custom mod the gain channel for me(as it will be fun coz its not being used)
Regards
Chris

well, for ACDC tone you should be looking at the Riff Raffs, although any of the low-gain HBs probably would suit (Mules, Stormy Mondays and the like)
also, have a look for a thread about unpotted pickups, could give you what you want
-
I wonder if BKP could rewind the Fender pickups?
It would be a shame to lose the distinctive look of the oversized covers and offset polepieces.
-
Could I not use the same covers with new pickups under? They are standard size under the covers.

I didn't know that! :o (that's supposed to be a "surprised" emoticon, although it looks like it's laughing...)
So are they just loose, removable covers and does the pickup have 2 complete rows of screw polepieces underneath?
I would think the polepiece spacing on a standard humbucker won't match, and the loose covers will make the pickups microphonic unless you get them potted.
-
probably best to send Tim the existing pickups and get him to fit the oversized covers when he makes the new ones, that way you know its done properly
-
good plan stan! Yeah its just normal humbuckers under the covers.
One thing though, what does it mean when they say calibrated set over a normal set of pups?
-
If you buy a pair of the same model they are both tweaked to work as good as they can together, or something like that. I've never tried a calibrated set, but even my "mis-matched" Mules sound amazing together so if its even better then thats great.
-
I would say Mules though the suggestion of getting the Fender pups rewound would make sense (though Tim would have to advise upon the practicalities).I thought that the Fender h/b's were slightly different size but from what you say, tha seems not to be the case.
-
i think i remember from another thread that Tim has rewound fender humbuckers before. suppose it depends on how much you want to keep the original look, and if you want to hold on to the original pickups in case you need to sell the guitar in the future.

well i like the idea of custom covers. I could have SLAYER writen on them
im really likeing the thought of the nailbombs....they sound like they have lots of tone. I really like the sound of a good metal guitar and amp but with almost all the distortion off.
Ill post samples up of my sound at the moment and see what you guys think.
