Title: Unpotted Aged Stormy Monday project
Post by: PhilKing on August 12, 2006, 11:16:08 PM
I just got my new unpotted aged Sormy Mondays.  To show you how good the aging is, I have put an old (30+ years), Gibson cover next to them.

The other 2 shots are the guitar they will be going into.  It is a 67 335 that has had a new neck at some point before I got it.  At the same time they decided to change the inlays to dots.  It has T-tops in there at the moment and doesn't sound bad until you play one of my guitars with BK's against it.  So it has been waiting for me to change the pickups.  I will give you after pictures too (and perhaps some in process shots if anyone wants to see the problems with changing pickups on a 335!).  The new pickups will be a better match than the chrome covers that are there at the moment.

Should be ok unless playing really loud- high gain riffing is out. You have to be careful where you stand on stage but I don't think Phil gigs- he will correct me if I am wrong.

You are right that I don't gig anymore, but I do play loud sometimes   These pickups don't feedback as much as you would expect.  I am really impressed with them.  I tried them into my new 8 watt custom amp (Marshall tone stack with 6V6 power amp).  They sound great, actually the neck pickup reminded me of Eric Bell's tone on Whiskey in the Jar (I just happened to be listening to it in the car with TO last night!).  The bridge pickup is brighter, as you would expect and can drive the amp nicely when you have it cranked a bit.  As you would expect with a 335, harmonic feedback is great and the SM's really do this well.

Mine are Alnico II magnets, 7.7K bridge and 7.0 neck (very close to the original T-tops which were 7.0 bridge and 7.47 neck).

Here are some shots of the work in progress - you can see the string I had connecting the Treble volume and tone pots so that I could get them back in place, and you can also see the hole into the body below the bridge PU.  The other shot is the guitar all back together and looking great.

She looks gorgeous Phil!

Man I'd love to play a few sweet tunes on your guitar!

I bet that on the edge tone is great fun!
