Title: A Review Of The Forum
Post by: jt on August 14, 2006, 02:33:10 PM
:D OK arrogant S**t that i am i thought for my 1000 post i`d give a quick & honest opinion of the state of the forum & see what you guys think here go`s............

It`s nice to see so many new faces appearing & to see that most of us still get on. The forum seems to have a "Friendly" nature to it which has certainly made the passing both giving & recieving of info much more pleasant. One hopes that this continues as the forum increases in size.

There seems to be a good cross section of players around all though many of the guys that do the most posting seem to fall into the "Rock" fraternity it would be nice to hear from those of you who don`t & espiecially to hear what your doing with your BK`s in the "Players" section.

I`ve noticed that alot of the older regular posters HJM, Steve, TO, March, Balde, Philking etc don`t seem to post that often now It`s also noticable that most of the longtime posters don`t seem to respond to the "Pickup" section. Even i now avoid it & only post replys to very very general questions. [ Although my reasons for doing so are purely my own]

Like most i`m still waiting for the Forum "Upgrade" I have to be honest here & say i like the forum Style wise the way it is.

The "Time Out" & "Dressing Room" sections seem to be the most popular not surprising really as talking about P/U`s gets tedious !  :P

I`m constantly amazed at the variety & number of Links you guys put up. Don`t you lot have anything else to do except surf the net !

It would be nice to see some of you guys doing some more work music wise, There only seems to be a few guys here that are planning to do or are recording Albums, TO, Steve, Bro to name but a few we should have more than a few [ i`m quilty of this to so i should kick myself up the arse as well ! ]

As for the future......i`d like to see the "Pickups" Section modded how`s about posting some "Sticky" posts that give people answers to there questions before they ask `em. As in what P/U should i get for.....Shred, Thrash, Blues, Jazz etc etc

So far i`ve enjoyed most of my time that i`ve been associated with this forum odd gripes aside it`s been fun.

I agree with all of that. I like the friendliness of this forum and its weird when theres an argument as I'm used to reading arguments on loads of forums I go on  I like the layout and style as well, it'd be weird if it were changed! Stickies are also a good idea in the pickups section I reckon.

I rarely post if I have nothin to say. That being said, the general quality of the threads has declined a bit of late. (Even with certain departures) The TITLES of most threads are downright embarrasing; I won't open a thread if I don't know what it's about.

Whilst it is still a friendly place, by and large, I agree with TO in that some threads are a bit tedious but I accept that is a by product of what is, mostly, a positive forum. I like to think of some of you guys as virtual mates and there is a great deal of knowledge and experience to be had and if I share a bit of my wisdom ( Mrs 38th says I should hold onto it as I don't have much) then that is a plus for me. I don't "belong" to other forums though I gather that sometimes people get very bitchy and petty-I'd be away from here if that happended. Most of us share a passion for our guitars and music and there are wide tastes and long may that continue. It gives me the chance to add the odd "one-liner" too.

I'm with TO on this.  I don't post as much because I only answer where I can help.  If people need assistance to decide what colour pickup, I can't help them.  Same if Tim has come back with and answer and then the same question is still being asked.  Once Tim has given a definative answer, that's enough for me (he has never steered me wrong with his choices).   I might add something if Tim is giving a choice and I can add something because I know the pickups in a different guitar to Tim (in a PRS for example - unless Tim picked up a PRS recently!).

I also don't post if I don't know the music that is used for the sound.  Since I am not into 'Death Metal' and shred for speed's sake, it would be meaningless for me to give an opinion.

Another case would be when I don't know the pickup's being asked about in a comparison.  I think it is pretty pointless to give an opinion if you only know one side of the question.  Since I never used a lot of the hi-gain and shred Duncans and DiMarzios, even though I might know the BK.

I usually try to answer tech questions where I can help, having spent a lot of time fixing and rewiring guitars.

Other than that, I am still enjoying the forum and it has been nice to meet some of the members in person.

I guess (since others started it and that means I don't have to feel bad, ) my only real complaint is that at any given time, most of the new threads/replies are in the off-topic sections... I don't know about anyone else, but I much prefer to post about guitar gear/pickups/etc. (since that's why I joined, lol), than about OT. But maybe that's just me...

But i suppose in a relatively small forum, only a fraction of people at any given time are going to be looking for new gear...

Meh, I'll not be satisfied until Sambo returns and finally shows me his secret lair of death.  :? Sounds like fun!  :D

On a more serious note, it seems alright here: People seem pretty friendly and there's a fair few pretty clued up people about for giving advice 'n stuff.

I think the quality of some threads has declined because of certain departures.

Ok, so not everyone liked the rambling multi-topic beasts that we had in the past, but at least they were pretty friendly and added to the rapport around here.

When every thread is serious the place becomes less enjoyable, IMO.

I dunno, it sounds intriguing. I imagine that it could lead to some kind of Indiana Jones-esque adventure, possibly involving having to dodge swinging, razor sharp BC Riches suspended from the ceiling of an egyptian tomb and so forth.

I still really enjoy this forum and chatting with the guys on here....
Some of the threads did get too purile even for Off Topic for a while

I think as a rule if you are posting more that 10 posts a day(other than Tim sharing his wisdom answering questions) - you maybe need to curb you enthusiasm a little for the internet and go and play some guitar or listen to some great guitar album (whilst not multitasking - so you get 100% benefit from listening).

Tha standard of conduct on this forum remains pretty high and whilst there is a little joshing and ribbing of each other we all treat each other with dignity.

** GRUMPY OLD GEEZER WARNING**

My personal bugbear sometimes is to do with the occaisional style of writing , use of txt mssg spelling or using phrases that anyone over the age of 25 will have no understanding of at all.

Now I know that I may be considered old at 41 and not in touch wiv da yoof, but I got a little weary of the use of phrases like "Owned", "ownt", "Pwnt" (and yes I do understand them and how they came about) but they irk me to an extent.

To be fair I also hate Chavs or Neds and hate the habit for middle class white kids to talk like they grew up in Kingston, Jamaica instead of Kingston, Surrey.
Take that idiot Abs who used to be in Boy-band  5, who has been on a reality TV show of late . I have to turn the TV channel over if he comes on . :x

Ok - it probably represents a genuine change in what is going on at a street level, but I feel that it is a shame as we have a pretty great language with so much potential for expression

OK - Grumpy old guy rant over

Pffft, it's only caffiene innit? If you were called MethamphetamineJunkie you'd have a point (but would probably have a distinct lack of guitars)!

This is an interesting topic.vWell done jt!

Well I love this place and spend way too much time in here, but! I do play whilst reading&posting, bad habit though and listening, yes Jonathon, good point! I do listen all day at work though, but others may not.

Recording jt, yes I'm really trying and will try harder!

I thought i knew a fair bit about guitars before finding this place and all i can say is i knew nothing! Since learning more it has given me a bigger passion for it all which spills over into life in general and it shows!!

Some of the topics can be pants but to be fair i do go on a lot myself whilst stoned (sometimes)  and when i read it un-stoned i cringe and then laugh!

Mr 38th (isn't he great!!) puts it all very well in his style, 'I think of you as virtual mates', so do I!

I don't go in other forums as they seem to lack the integrity of bkp. They pull the shooters out over silly things and it just gets tedious reading ego fuelled slanging matches, even though, the extracts that end up here are funny!

I know how to get some more focus for projects.....Afghan Dave, are you still up for this jam?

Hmm, by your reckoning then Feline, I'm grumpy and old also (even though I'm only 17 :P) as that talking weird thing annoys me too - even IN text messages I'll use full sentence. My feeling is that it's worth the extra 10p to try and save some of the English language :drink:

I also would agree with you that I post too much, but it's usually a healthy biproduct of using the internet to make plans to do other things with mates. Although I should spend more time playing guitar

Mr Mac, I agree with you about the use of other forums - every other post is an argument. It's fair enough to have a difference of opinion, but delivering it in a threatening or insulting manner gets us nowhere.

I suppose that my response is highly predictable but I totally agree with the core sentiments of Mr 38th, Jonathan and Johnny Mac.

I have a lot of fun on this forum and like to consider it as a chance to enjoy the company of some like minded fellows.

For those nicotine addicts this analogy might show you where I'm coming from, it’s a virtual "smoking room" at NAMM / London Guitar Show.

I pop in and see what people are chatting about and gauge the potential value and appropriateness of my contribution before I chip in with my 2 cents.

It does irritate me when some people don't bother to use the SEARCH FUNCTION to uncover the truly great posts on clear search terms  e.g. "holy diver") from switched on users held in the vaults.

It's just lazy and presumes that the motivation / resource of these guys  (PhilKing / Twilight O et al) are limitless.

These guys don't get paid to be here and have busy lives but their contributions have and continue to add great value to the forum.

This forum has given me the chance to talk with and meet some quality players and friends and I think that bonus on top of owning some of the best pickups in the world put me ahead on the deal.

Johnny, Trust me I have not forgotten about the jam..  PDT_003

Is it my imagination or have the questions people ask in the Pickups section become very general, like "What pickups are suited for Zakkster-style speed-shredding in an LP?" where the answer is pretty clearly "Miracle Man"?

Or have I become jaded?

Anyway, there are still some interesting threads, like the unpotted pups thread which had some useful info straight from Tim.  But I'd agree that the level of detail in discussion seems to have gone down.  Half the time it seems like people just chime in to say "Oh, you want Cold Sweats!" or "Rebel Yells", doubtless fine pups, but they seem to crop up as recommendations a lot without much explanation as to why they might fit the poster's needs.

Or have I become jaded?  ;)

Like most i`m still waiting for the Forum "Upgrade" I have to be honest here & say i like the forum Style wise the way it is.

I don't feel much desire for a "Forum" upgrade, though I still eagerly await the general web site upgrade with more "official" clips and more detailed info about the pups.  I await it despite not really having a guitar handy to buy more BKPs for at the moment :)

Quote from: jt
As for the future......i`d like to see the "Pickups" Section modded how`s about posting some "Sticky" posts that give people answers to there questions before they ask `em. As in what P/U should i get for.....Shred, Thrash, Blues, Jazz etc etc

I sometimes think that in lieu of a mighty informational update to the web site, it'd be worth collecting together some of the more interesting posts from the BKP dude, from TO and PhilKing and other highly knowledgable posters, as a kind of "Best of the Forum" feature.  Some of the info scattered through the Forum (not always easily found by Search, since the total number of archived posts has been growing quite large) would probably be helpful new joiners, and there's only so many times that PhilKing or someone is likely to want to repeat themselves.

Quote from: jt
The "Time Out" & "Dressing Room" sections seem to be the most popular not surprising really as talking about P/U`s gets tedious !  :P

Bite your tongue! How could one ever get tired of talking about pickups!?  And if one did (strange though that might be), there are still guitars, amps, and stompboxes to rattle on about .... ;)

I'm working on it!  I've always got a few recording projects simmering away.  Just a song at a time, not albums -- I'm a modestly serious hobbyist, not a pro, and have no real intention of trying to make recordings for sale, let alone complete album-sized pacakges.  And I dunno that there are that many BKP forum members near me to form an actual band.  But if anyone out there wants to get into online collaboration, that's cool. :)  My guitar technique is too cr@ppy to make a useful contribution to a "BKP album" but I can rock out in general applciation well enough! :)

I think I fall into a very similar category, but my theory (and what I will attempt to do when I get recording gear) is that we can record some cool sounding riffs to give the impressive people on the forum somewhere to start from - I have a coupla ideas already.

And also, if it looks like some people are making an effort, i think others will be more likely to join in :drink:

good thread!

I like this forum... i've been a hugely active forumite in the past on other forums (games & bands etc) but dont reaaally bother anymore since i cant post at work now.

I dont even read the Pickup section much, there seems to be alot of 1 time posts saying 'i'm thinking of a BKP when i get another guitar in 3 years' type posts and the starters never reply or disappear... a FAQ sticky thread is definitely needed.

I think a sticky with 'Forum Rules < New Users Read >' would be a good idea, include a link to the search page and point out its just as quick to hit search and read what comes up as it is to create and type a new thread and wait for replies.

On the whole its good, plenty of nice people who actually KNOW stuff and arent just BS ego maniac posers trying to get one up on you.

I do like the random\useless threads which pop u in Time Out and Dressing Room ;)

We still havent had an argument where someone calls someone else a 'geek' for using the internet...every forum NEEDS one of those at some point

Yeah, but previous experience on other forums says that people won't bother reading it...

Unless maybe (computer bods help me out here) we made people unable to post until it had been registered that they had read it (or at least been to the page)
