Title: Found my holy grail ...
Post by: hunter on August 16, 2006, 05:14:53 PM
Allright, no more amp GASing (at least for the coming few weeks:), as far as I can tell after the past few weeks testing everything I could get my hands on that is loud and has tubes, this  finally is the holy grail for me:

MY NEW SHIVA !!!!

(I will add an extensive review with clips in this post later this week...)

Lucky you.  :)  I have been very happy with my tone lately and I don't have the money for anything else, dammit.

The replica is cool. It's a no-brainer, meaning it sounds good, works reliable and is very easy to use. The sound quality is absolutely professional. If you need a delay just for d e l a y, that sounds great and can be either transparent or vintage (filter activated) this is it.

If you need a delay for outer space stuff and over the top experimental, this is not it, as you cannot change delay time while it's active, which is crucial for over the top space echo sessions.

So maybe the summary is: very good delay, but a bit boring.

If you're happy with your tone then everything's allright, isn't it? I wasn't happy, that's why this had to be. Now I really need to sell my UniValve and Screamer.

Gah!  Now I look silly.  I meant to type that I haven't been very happy with my sound lately.  Well, I'm happy with my sound other than the clean sound, which is where I sit for most of my playing.

Nice! I see you got the Crunch Box as well, or did you allready have it? Opinions? If possible, clips with it on the clean channel of your new amp would be awesome (hope I'm not being too cheeky here :P)

cool, thanks. I'd be using it for solos and the like. I might take a look, lol.

CrunchBox=very cool. Kind of gives me that Splawn grind. The Shiva clean channel loves pedals, I'll post clips this weekend.

+1 on the Shiva! Great, great amp! There are some great clean amps, great crunch amps, but this is one of the few that has both!

+1 on the crunchbox also!

Nice amp!
I'll have to go and try some amps as well :D
You also are a tonelab player, right?
So here's my very blasphemic question: how would you compare the modeller to the Shiva? (I know they are two totaly different things, but anyway...)

And talking pedals, have you ever played the tube zone?
And if so, what's the difference to the crunchbox?

Hi! The tubezone may be one of the most polyvalent od pedals around. You can go from light crunch to full blast dual rectifier type of tones. I strongly recommand v.3 as the internal controls are now accessible on the outside, much more useful to get the maximum out of it.
The crunch box is more of a one trick pony, basically modded plexi Marshall ala Van Halen tone, very convincing, see my thread on it for more details:

http://bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4907&highlight=

You can get pretty close to the crunch box tones with the tubezone, because it has such a wide range of controls, and still remains simple to use. I see it as the "Swisstool" of pedals and when it's not on my pedalboard it stays in my guitar case, ready to jump out! The ultimate weapon for session players, IMO. Great thing also with the tubezone is you can look for your OWN tone.

There are no stupid questions, only stupid answers:)

So comparing the TLab to an amp, is actually not so easy. I would say at VERY low volume, the modeller (and especially the TLab) will be more convincing. So for these moments before sunrise if the kids are asleep, there's no real use in firing up a 100W full tube stack to play on 0.001 level.

The big difference comes with a band situation and/or proper volume, where the full tube amp (and especially a top of the line one like the Shiva) will respond so dynamically to your playing, like the modeller never would. The tube amp is just so much more touch sensitive, organic, alive. It sings with so many different voices.

On the modeller you can find a sound that sounds great no matter how you play, with a cranked tube amp this is becoming much more difficult - but also the payback is much higher, you get such versatile, dynamic and punchy tones - from a modeler i haven't heard anything yet that comes even close.

However, if you mic a tube amp and record its signal and put it in the context of a song, where tracks will be compressed and EQed and effects added, the remaining difference will be very small.

Yeah, they got nice stuff. Also got a diamond drive which will be added to the board (need to do some space and arrangement management :)
