Title: Changing to heavier gauge strings - help
Post by: b0ng0 on August 17, 2006, 08:53:31 AM
Ok, my main problem is that I recently bought a set of EB Top Heavy Bottoms for my Cort X6. Previously I had 9's on my guitar and it was set up for these but I thought - it can't be that hard to change to a heavier gauge i'll give it a try.

So when I put them on, as expected the floyd rose bridge was way up in the air due to the increased tension. However, when I tried tightening the springs in the back, I tightened the screws as far as they would go and the bridge was still nowhere near being parallel with the body of the guitar.

So yesterday I changed back to super slinks but my main question is - is it possible to put on a heavier gauge strings, or will my guitar just not take them :(. I thought maybe stronger springs would need to be installed but I really don't know.

Thanks :)

Your guitar should take them but you will need at least 3 springs (and good ones) if tuning to regular pitch.

Downtuning you may get away without too much change as the tension drops

Get schaller or Gotoh springs if possible

If you get stuck for finding some give us a shout - link to our site at the bottom of this post

Well it has 3 springs in it at the moment which are perfect for 9's but I suspect that they just aren't strong enough to take the strain of the thicker strings.

At the moment i'm content to stick with my 9's but if I feel the need to change in the future, you would advise that I would need to get stronger springs? As I said, the 3 that I have in my guitar could not be pulled any tighter when I have the thicker strings on, and the bridge was nowhere near being parallel with the body :p.

Thanks

I have a cort X6 too, and I swapped the bottom three and top e string for heavier ones (10s). But that was as heavy as I could go with the springs tightened as much as possible.

And I think you could use more springs rather than stronger ones.

i hate having 9-42s fitted

9-46s are better, cos you can get the power chords sounding a lot better, and it just feels tighter

Caffeine: Roto Blues are where it's at - 10 - 52s :drink: (yes, I know there's a box of Yellows in my avatar - but my strat needed strings, and the shop were out of Blues [and there's no way I'd use EB's on there!])

nah, i hate rotosounds, every pack i've bought (even 12s) broke as i was fitting them or very soon after

i used to use Ernie Balls, but i found they turn black REALLY quick, so now i use Feline string, which, may i say, are $%&#ing brilliant

Admittedly, I've not tried a huge number of brands of guitar string...I used Ernie Balls to start out with (as I'm sure many people do) because they were just what the shop gave me and I didn't think to get anything else. Then, A friend said to try the Rotos, so I did...and I still use them

I've never actually broken one, so they seem to hold up well...and unlike the EB's they don't have that cheap feel (IMO) :drink:

Where can you get Felines from? I looked on the website but couldn't see a space to order and checked the ebay shop but all I could see were T-shirts
