Ok - so JP played a tele on LZ1 - what position did he play - neck, neck/bridge or bridge.
I am not familiar with the Tele neck sound (I know the twangy bridge) what does it sound like? Thick, Thin, Hot, Smooth?
-
I would say that it is kinda like a Strat neck but a bit plummier-can't think of another word. A bit richer perhaps- oddly enough I have never a done a a/b of mine- I shall have to.

bridge pickup
2 reasons
1) when he does his bowing, he doesn't touch the switch, and he pushes his fingers right up to that pickup
2) i have a picture of him playing dazed and confused and you can just about see the position of the pickup selector...

Sounds like bridge to me, not that I've ever played a tele (:o!) but it sounds too biting to be neck. Communication Breakdown tone is so bloody good.
-
I love my Tele neck pickup, but I agree with 38th - it's hard to describe the sound in ways that those who haven't used one could understand...
-
Of course his original telecaster had the strange wiring that gives you Bridge, Neck and Neck with tone rolloff. According to the Duchossoir book, this was the circuit from 1953-1967.

Obviously he would use all three positions.
I recently ABed a custom Tele on neck PU vs a Heritage LesPaul, and the Tele sounded fuller, fatter and richer!!!!!

So did Jimmy have a 5 positon switch?

Shhh! don't tell 38th!

+1 - We hear enough about 4 way switches, let alone 5 ways! (Love ya really Mr 38th :drink: )

As far as I have read he had the stock 3 position with the original wiring on the Tele. But that one was stolen I believe and he said he could neve get the same tone from the replacement guitars that he had (this was obviously pre-BK's :D ).

Too late boys, I have seen the post.. you young scoundrels thinking I wouldn't notice. Now, 4 way switches, whilst we are on the subject blah blah blah
