Title: Marshall JCM600
Post by: Crazy_Joe on August 19, 2006, 07:24:30 PM
Is this a good head?
I've heard of the JCM800, but never the 600, does it perform well?
Also how well do you think it would do metal?

I've heard of them before, but never actually heard one.

From what I can remember, they're kinda rare. Not great for metal, more vintage sounding (may be wrong though).

i'd imagine in terms of the gain yu'd expect from a JCM600 it'd be no good for metal at all, assuming it has less than an 800 which has less than a 900 which has less than a 2000

the other guitarist in my band had one a few years back...at the time his band was playing AC/DC kinda stuff. It was adequate, but not much more. I'd rather have a JCM800 anyday.

I played one when I went searching for an amp a couple of years ago.. it was quite good but I didnt really get to crank it, definately dont think it'd do metal, at least not without a booster.

I've had one, they do an alright rock tone but the main thing is their reliability and poor build quality.  The output transformer blew on mine and I've heard this was quite a common fault.

Nowhere near as good as a JCM800 or 900.

I had a JTM 60 (slightly earlier version of the JCM600) until recently.  They don't do metal at all, just your classic rock sounds.  The heaviest sound you'll get out of it without any pedals or boosters would be early Van Halen.

It did a great AC/DC sound but I couldn't use it live.  They sound good at lower volumes but if you crank them they mush up really badly.  The O/T went on mine to so I got it fixed and sold it.

I've switched to Laneys now and won't go back - they really put me off Marshalls.

^ if the jtm 60 is a version (kind of) of the jcm600, then I echo twinfan- I didn't like the jtm60 at all- the overdrive channel was total cr@p, IMO.

No idea, but it has that kind of tone.  Certainly not a metal amp.
