Title: Huge Announcement!
Post by: Crazy_Joe on August 22, 2006, 10:08:51 PM
I went to the guitar store today!!

They didn't have the RG1570, HOWEVER, they had the older version of it used which is the RG570EX, and my god to i love wizard necks!
It was so easy to play with that neck, it had really cool sharktooth inlays and i loved messing around with a whammy bar!
It was extremely light and had a nice low action perfect guitar, very fast, it had a lot of marks on the back, i thought ahh damn now i'm bound to not like it, but for some reason it didn't bother me one bit!

Second was the Tokai Explorer, and that was a beast, such a dark rich sound compared to the Ibanez, i loved holding the explorer, made me feel like James Hetfield! It gave me more confidence when the guy there said, 'Yeah these guitars are great, definatley better than some of those Gibsons over there!'
It has a pretty fat neck but it was quite flat on the back of the neck and less rounded than my les paul which is another advantage, i found it great to play, the frets were jumbo frets but the frets were small and there was no major streching for any frets.

I really can't decide, even though there is about £200 difference, it is completely 50/50 since they are both completely different guitars for different styles of metal, but i play all kinds of metal so they both fit my style!

I really don't know, i'm leaning towards the Explorer, but that wizard neck was really something else, i loved it!

What say you Bare Knucke Forum??

i haven't tried the tokai. It really depends what you play- I'd say if you play more shreddy-lead, I'd go with the ibanez. if you play more metal rhythm, the tokai.

that's probably a gross oversimplification, though.

Yeah that is a bit too simple!
But i am more of a rhythm player, though i do like to try and shred sometimes!

The Tokai was amazing, if it had a wizard neck then that would probably be my ultimate guitar!

And thats all I have to say about that

There is no way i'm going to decide without going back and trying them again!
I made a list to kind of battle them against each other, but in the end they drew! haha

Did you try em with a strap whilst standing?
Good test as Explorer is well balanced and great to play like this.

That's as good as a 1570 but better because it saves you some room in the wallet for some BKPs for it and maybe still some leftover.

Good pickup ;)

I'm more of an Ibanez person myself but thinking objectively, which one are you more likely to find at a later date? The Ibanez probably, so maybe go for the Tokai as it's rarer. Old Ibanezs are always cropping up.

Sounds like the Ibanez is more confortable for you, but the Tokai appeals to you because of the looks.  If I'm right go for the Ibanez.  Something that feels right beats something that looks good any day, especially after the novelty wears off.

The Ibanez is more versatile, but the Tokai will have loads of "meat" as a tone.  I have different guitars as I don't always want one tone.  Decide what tone you're after, what kind of songs you'll be playing and go with that.

id base it on how they play...i also love Wizard necks ;)

If i found a pink Hello Kitty strat that played better than a 'normal' strat, id buy the Hello Kitty one... how it plays and feels matters.. how it looks... not so much (unless you are in a band and have a band image etc etc :P)

I agree that the Tokai is rarer.. might also hold its value more... then again it MIGHT be difficult to sell on (IF you have to) as people tend to go for the big brands like Gibson and Ibanez on the whole..

Its a tough one... good luck

Just toss a coin, innit! Either way you'll be getting a nice guitar.

Get the Explorer. The cool factor alone is enough to beat the Ibanez.

I'm going back to try them again this week.

Yeah i am going to take my strap with me and see how they are like standing up.

Also i'm still leaning towards the Explorer, because old Ibanez guitars are always coming up in Coda and other shops, so it's not like i will never be able to get one.

But the Explorer is different because it is a well built Japanese model and it is hard to find a good Explorer without spending loads of money, e.g. Gibson.
And i don't want a cheap ESP LTD Explorer.
Also it is LTD Edition, only a few made, so i think i will take the opportunity and get that.

However, standing up and playing the guitars might make the difference. We shall see!

for an amazing metal/shred guitar, why dont you save up and buy a real made in the USA Jackson, they're quite underatted. Japaneze ones dont even come close to a real one!

Have to disagree on that ^. My MIJ Soloist was every bit as good as a USA made one.

I'd go for the Explorer - Heavy chugging is much more fun than pretending you can shred :P

But then again, I always hated the twig like neck thing Ibanez have got going on, I prefer something with a bit more meat to it :drink:

It will take ages for me to get that kind of money, and i also think some Japanese models can out play a USA made one.

My korean Dean wipes the floor with the Jap RR5 i had, and also with my USA Gibson LP.

Country of origin does not a guitar make!

I've even read threads on the HC forums where people claimed that 'USA Branded' items like hardware\pickups are 2nds\made of cheaper materials when you get them on Jap\Koren\Chinese guitars

Do people think the USA is a magical land? All the machines used in manufacturing are probably Chinese\Jap ;)

Case in point: head over to JCF forums under 'Limited Editions'.

Read the 11+ page thread about Jackson CUSTOM SHOP $3000++ orders which took a year to come, arrived with the wrong spec and made out of dodgy wood and had peeling paint.. along with bent necks and other problems... hows that for USA?

Eek ranted there....

Anyway, proof is in the playing. If a USA guitar plays well, great. If a chinese one plays well, great. Just because its not USA doesnt mean its inferior, and USA aint a-ok ;)

+1 again for the Tokai by the way! :)

The SZ series (I think thats the one anyway) have a slightly thicker neck, it feels really nice actually. I think I prefer Fender necks though  :drink:
