I am looking into getting the pignose amplifier, for most of my recordings. It's a lovely little 5 watt dirty amp, if you didn't already know.
here's a link to the site http://www.pignoseamps.com/index.php?disp=detail&subcat=portamps&id=253
I need to know if the vintage pignose amps are actually better? before buying one. They seem great value for the price, when you consider how good the pignose sound is ; D
Please get in touch with any info regarding the pignose.

A buddy of mine left one with me in the mid 80's. I believe he had it since
the late 70's. I'm not sure how it compares to the new ones but it is a great
bedroom amp. I have it on a larger taped up cardboard box, facing up,
running a PODxt through it. Have been very happy with this setup.

are the controls the same??? and sound??? this is interesting but apparently, the pignose amps have not changed for over 30 years according to the website. Whether that is true or not I dunno?
Does your amp have just one control on it? for the volume AND do you have any audio examples of it? I'd love to hear your pignose in action!!!

May or may not be of interest but Davey Johnstone( Elton John band) used a Pignose back in the 1970's apparently very happily and he is supposedly quite particular about his gear.

JJretroTONEGOD,
No audio and at the moment I have no way of recording, but I'll try to answer your questions the best I can. From their website photo it looks exactly the same, except mine has aged and gotten darker, the metal has tarnished a bit and some of the vinyl has cracked. I must have the second version with the vinyl covering instead of the original real pigskin.
I haven't tried the new ones and I haven't examined one either so I can't really comment on the guts of it, but since there is nothing to this amp I don't see why it wouldn't be the same.
Yes, mine has a single on/off volume pot with a set screw on the bottom of the pig nose at 6 o'clock. At about 9 the volume comes on abruptly and maxes out at 4. It opens up like a book with the ceramic speaker on the left side above the on/off volume pot which is flanked, on both sides, by the AA battery holders (3 on each side). The right side bottom has the circuits under a cover and what looks like a bracket to wind up the cable of the AC adapter. From what I've read the Pignose AC is a must for a hum free recording. I’ve been using a cheapo RS 9V 300mA adapter (for now). On the back there is a small plate with the AC jack and a preamp out under it.
Unlike most here, I have played only a very few amps, but for comparisons I would say it has a voice and characteristic similar to small Fender tweeds. With its opening back and small size you have a lot of options for playing around with recording it. I've been using it with the POD to set up different sets of amps for the guitars I have, but it certainly stands up on its own.
Over all it's a LOT of fun for $75.

THis thread points to the a gorilla amp being used (big brother of the pignose)

cheers. I'm gonna go for a brand new one now, I'll get it in about two weeks, I'm gonna use it to drive bigger amps and cabs and also I'll use it a lot to record, I like a RAW sound. The other amp I'm considering is this, it's an epihone valve junior head amp and it's very versitile and very cheap for a class A amp, I may use this as my main amp for gigs and the pignose for recordings, or even both at the same time for a sterio blues sound.
