Title: Warmoth Custom Guitar - pics!!!!
Post by: Bainzy on August 25, 2006, 11:40:21 PM
I've not finished polishing the body so it looks a bit odd, especially with the naff flash in this old digi camera, but here it is against the Plexi and one of my cabs:

Sorry again about the flash, it makes the neck look wierd. Couldn't believe how well the dye turned out on the neck though; I didn't even think there was much figure on the neck until I applied gloss nitro over the dye (Coloron Antique Pine from B & Q btw). Sometimes it looks orangey-brown, but most of the time it looks more creamy, like butterscotch on maple Fender necks but a bit different.

Although it's got a nice 100% nitrocellulose finish all over the guitar now though, it's still not really a "looker" guitar that I'd put away in a hard case. I leave it lying around all the time so I can pick it up easily at any time, and it's a real "players guitar". If it gets dented, chipped, etc, no problem as it adds to it's charm.

Dang it Bainzy! Now you've given me Gas to get more gear!

I'm in the market for a new amp and I've been thinking Marshall.

Seeing you're guitar and amp really makes me want one even more!

Lovely Guitar BTW, really really jealous  :P .

Looks good to me :) Does Warmoth work out cheaper than the UK guitar parts places such as WD, Axesrus, Allparts etc? I'd like to make myself some kinda superstrat whenever I have a job :P

It's done! I've wired it all up, that's now in the Marshall. I'm just currently waiting to buy a new 12v fan as the one I installed to cool the PS-Box wasn't particuarly cracking - it was quiet acoustically, but gives off horrible amounts of RFI so I'm going with a brushless one instead. As soon as that's fixed expect some soundclips in the players room.

Depends what you get - if you're building a run of the mill strat replica, might be more expensive, but if you want anything at least slightly different than a strat you'd have to go with Warmoth. The neck cost about £200 inc shipping and the body cost about £130 (i think?). Not that bad considering the quality is far higher than the typical mightymite parts you get from those places you mentioned, I originally started with a mightymite strat body but got a Warmoth one instead as there were so many things that needed doing to it (thick poly finish needs stripping, trem holes need drilling, neck pocket needs re-routing as it's at the wrong angle).

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! not again, marshall are one of the worst amps ever made!

My personal taste is that I think they're too gritty and agressive and horrible in the upper mid range, especially JCM800s

go for an Orange, Custom Audio, Mesa Boogie, Cornford, Matchless, Soldano, Peavey or vintage Vox and Fender, they're miles better
sonically, guitarists need to stop going for marshalls, there WAY overatted!

 :grr:

a pat on the back there for someone who is not taken in by the Marshall hype! thank you!

i havent tried upper range models... but all the lower range models ive tried (which is quite a lot) really dont stack up well at all against other manufacturers in my opinion.

Yeah Marshalls lower quality stuff is really shite... but come on the decent old Marshalls (JCM800, JTM45 etc) are the sound of rock! Although apparently Laney now give them a run for their money with the GH50L..

Bainzy, you can get various buffing add-ons for hand drills at Machine Mart IIRC. This will allow you to thin out the poly finish and achieve a slightly better sustain (well in theory). You screw the buffer (lambswool or various foams) onto a spindle that gets secured in the same way as a drill bit.

I think Nathan Shepherd (sp?) does something similar. You can even wire wool it with the 000 wirewool and get a satin/matt finish. I did this with my chinese squier years back. I found a figure of 8 movement resulted in the best finish with the wire at the time.

On the subject of Marshalls - ne'er spend a pittance, some of their stuff is truly fantastic - as with all things depends on what kind of player you are as a country muso ait gonna get his twang out of a plexi.

It's a nitrocellulose finish - but I expect that buffer should work just as well - thanks for the tip, I'll look into it this weekend. I would've polished it before putting it together, but I didn't have time to wait for the nitro to fully cure - I had a gig to play the week after refinishing it that I got into all of a sudden. It's been about a month now though, so next time I restring the guitar I'll sand it out and buff it.

What nobody seems to realise is all the hype about Marshalls comes from the original amps of the late 60's, not the JCM800's, and especially not from the modern amps. When you slam a chord on a real vintage Marshall or reissue modded with original parts, you'll grin from ear to ear and think "that's the perfect guitar tone I've been hearing in my head all this time!". It's just a shame that Marshall lost their way a bit after the mid 1970's in how to build amps - they forgot that components are what makes an amp just as much as the circuit path they use.

Besides, we want aggressive midrange don't we? I thought we were playing c--k-rock here, not *lose all mids so you can't hear my cr@p playing in the mix* emo-metal!

I have to be honest and say that every one of the big amp makers is out to make money. Thats why they make the entry level stuff. Its so they can get their hooks into the kids who want the marshall amps in their bedrooms and their fledgling bands.

The reissues of the classics I've read reviews of look stunning. I've yet to hear one though. One of my locals has one in stock, but I wouldnt contemplate trying it incase I ended up having to stick a 4x12 in the shed.

The TSL100, in my mind, is a great all round amp for rock. It gets a bad name from people who havent figured out how to use it, or play the damn thing in a room with nothing but four brick walls.    I also read that if one of the power valves goes the whole power circuit fudges up and needs replacing? I may have misunderstood though to be honest..

With the guitar you may not need a final sand. See how smooth  and thick it is, and try with the wire wool first. If you want it shiny get the lambswool and buff like your life depended on it      I dont think nitro would come up as shiny and glass like as poly - I've only ever buffed the poly on that one guitar and read the rest in books so its purely academic
