Do i suck at guitar? Or are the tracks on this album hard to learn!
I tried to learn Blackened but then i got bored with it in a few minutes
Also i though One would be the easiest track, i did alright until i got bored of that too.
And Justice was alright.
Thats all i half learned because there are some very tricky riffs in there and it is pissing me off haha!
Someone say they had trouble with some of these tracks so it doesn't make me feel as if i suck!
-
I did have trouble with them, I was 13 at the time tho.
-
Well i'm 16 and have been playing for about a year.
-
Sorry, was taking the piss
It is fair to say that Hammett does play some quite intricate solos that take a while to get the hang of, you've gotta be a bit obsessive to really nail them note for note. Also, keeping up with a lot of even the rhythm work can be quite hard work, to play like hetfield takes some serious precision and a lot of attention to detail, on a slightly different note: If you wannalearn to play with a bit of a groove to your style, you'd do well to really pay attention to how hetfield plays on the black album. :)
-
Justice has some of the best rhythm guitar playing EVER by Hetfield (and indeed, in thrash in general imho)
Dont be disheartened!
Remember, it wasnt until late last year\this year that metallica managed to re learn and play 'Dyers Eve' live... now THATS a track.
Dakine is the Metallica expert, but i'm pretty sure they went all out to make the playing 'perfect' and did lots of chopping and pasting with different takes etc to get it like that.
Hammett does some great soloing aswell..
-
An underrated album definitely.
It was difficult for the old fans to get used to the fact that Cliff was no longer holding down the low end...
Cliff 'em all... RIP Cliff.
-
Yeah this is definatley Metallica at their musical peak, i don't think they can play many of the songs from there anymore, they only ever play One live.
I read somewhere that after they played Justice once back in the day one of them said, $% that we're never playing that song again!
-
They have also matured (in some case had therapy) alot.
What I mean is (on record) Jason was basically 'mixed out' of AJFA. This created a very Bass Light work. After all the hazing and subsequent leaving of Jason, I am sure some embarressment (actually documented again) by the other members abounds.
Hetfield is also famous for a FANATICAL regard to his tone and spends days to weeks perfecting the right sound before the band turn up and any recording is done.
Personally, I think the 'now' embarressment of what they did to Jason is main factor in reluctance to play stuff from that particular album.

Also, on record, Kirk says they are unhappy with their guitar sound?!?!, saying it is too dry. Trying to mix MOP with Garage days, and to them, failing.
-
I read an interview with Hetfield where he said they layered something like 70 tracks of guitar to make it sound super heavy and it ended up sounding like 1 guitar! A bit of overkill.
-
One of my favourite parts of music ever has to be that harmonised section just before the solo in Blackened, it sounds amazing!
-
Justice is awesome, my fave Metallica tones on record after the original Garage Days re-revisted EP.
The songs on Justice ARE very technical, I'd be inclined to get the tab and save yourself some time - some of the riffs are nothing like they sound as well. I got the tab book for 'Puppets and there were even more notes crammed into some of those riffs than I'd first thought :o
Leper Messiah, now THAT is a riff (omg!!!)
-
the low end on that album is absolutely $%ed up.
they tried to make it sound huge, but if you listen to the chugging, you'll hear that the bass is TOO big.
very cool riffage though. i gotta go and re-play it one of these days.
-
Thing is Justice was simplified coz Hammett and Lars couldnt keep up with hetfields riffing he was writing loads of sections in odd times and using lots of syncopation..
Metallica also believe this was there weakest album, which i honestly dont agree with St.Anger is haha.
But yea don't be disheartend by the Fact you cant play some of this album i'll tell u now the harder parts are Hetfields riffs not Hammetts leads. or atleast thats what I think.
-
I agree with St Anger being a sorry day in all Metallica fan's lives - and no way was AJFA as bad as that...
Having said that, Frantic was quite a catchy song :P had it stuck in my head for a while when I first heard it.
-
St. Anger wasn't the worst. Remember Load and Reload?
-
St, Anger is the worst album in the history of metal. Load and Reload are alright albums, And Justice is one of the best imo, the most underated album in the history of metal!
-
load and reload are pretty cool albums. at least he was singing there.
and the tunes are produced and the arrangements are pretty ok.
it's not a metallica kickass album, but they are solid rock albums
-
Yeah, i have been listening to Hero Of The Day, Outlaw Torn, Fuel, The Memory Remains and King Nothing a lot recently.
The S & M version of Hero Of The Day is awesome.

only song where the symphony actualy fits imo.
with the others they could have left it out cos it adds nothing to it. and on master it flat out doesnt even fit the song in terms of arrangements
-
I hate the S & M version of Enter Sandman, it sucks!
Oh yeah and i have been listening to Until It Sleeps a lot too.
-
Maybe you don't really want to play it, or have got bored with it? Might sound stupid but I remember me and my mates playing some rock stuff all day and we were bored with it. At one point the drummer just went into this reggae type beat, next thing you know we were all enjoying ourselves and playing a lot better. I saw this tip in Guitar Player mag which says the same thing but far more eloquently:
"Play what you would like to hear, rather than what you would like to play.” —Bill Kirchen
-
or do both = Dread Zeppelin :P

Not at all! You don't 'suck' at guitar. You just haven't given each track the time and effort it takes to learn it.
The timing of the blackened riff is pretty damn hard if you haven't played anything like it before. Persevere. You shouldn't be getting bored. Surely the challenge is the fun part of it and once it 'clicks', you begin to understand more technical riffs and consequently learning equally difficult riffs is less of a learning curve.
-
I got bored of trying to learn that album, i'm now more into creating my own stuff, good some really good riffs, hopefully the band will like them and we can create some metal madnessss!

Bored of learning?!!!?!
What DO they teach at schools these days. :D
Good for you. I've always been more into writing my own stuff rather than learning other peoples stuff, although I still think its important to learn from other bands/artists to develop your own writing skills; Once you really break down a riff and REALLY get to grips with it, you understand how it was written and thus your own writing gets better as a result.
I also believe in being stubborn and finishing what you set out to do. So don't 'give up' on learning something. Figure out where you are going wrong and figure out how to put it right!
Or I'll set this little fella on yer...
:)

lol, i will go back to it one day, but i am full of riffs right now and they need to get made into songs!
