Do you think i could get a Metallica kind of tone from a Line 6 Spider II 212, say ...And Justice For All or Master of Puppets era?
I was playing on my brothers new 30 watt Spider II and it sounded alright, it's got a load of power too.
I'm just trying to find a cheap way out here because these tube amps don't come cheap and i already have the money for the Line 6 Spider II 212.
I know some will say, go upstairs and see instead of asking us!
But on the 30 watt there isn't much to tweak though there are only bass, mid and treble knobs.
The 212 is double the size of this so it will have more to tweak, that's why i'm asking this.

No, I wouldn't have thought you'd get anywhere near those types of tones with the Spyder.
Honestly I really don't like the the Spyder amps, and would rather save more for a better tube amp, even a Peavey Valveking with an OD would do a better jon of getting the kind of tones you're after.
Just bear in mind though that you still won't get that near. Metallica used some damn expensive gear to get that sound, and on Justice especially there were so many layers of guitar tracks and additional eq'ing, I doubt anyone would be able to recreate it with a single amp.
-
Yeah screw that i don't know what i was thinking then lol
I've been reading reviews about Peavey Valve Kings actually and they usually say it can get close to metal but not fully. Someone said you can get a near Metallica tone which is what i want, but if i get a valve king it looks like i'm going to be needing an overdrive/distortion pedal.
-
If you want a cheap badass tube amp, check the Peavey ValveKing 112 or 212.

Whats Line6's top o the line? The Vetta or summit aint it? There were a couple of gigging bands on the Guitarist forums who say they are really good for getting rock tones. You're looking at well over a grand IIRC though.
Joe, the Valveking will do classic rock and older metal rather well, its just not suited to the more death/thrash related music. A Jackhammer, DS1 or whatever will increase the gain just enough though.
I know a lot of people dont seem to like them, but for about 200 quid s/h you can get a Mesa V Twin preamp. This will produce a nice, thick, full on distortion/metal sound into a good amp.
Just found THIS (http://www.guitarampkeyboard.com/options.php?id=450) and yeah, over a grand. Its would be very bloody loud though at 150w :? I've heard nothing but great things about them (Beleive me, I love valves so I tend to go "nanananana!" ).
-
The Vetta is an awesome amp, but I'm assuming you're on a bit of a budget, which is why I suggested the Valveking and an OD pedal.
What sort of budget do you have to work with?
-
to get the sound you're after then I recon it's all about the EQ on the amp. I'd literally sit down and match the amp sound to the recording, have u thought of this?
-
400-500 quid, look at my amp thread it has all the info in there,
http://bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5091
Edit: No i have not sat down and done that because i don't think this Marshall MG 15 watt amp will get anywhere near to it.
-
p.s the line 6 spider two is a great amp, and i recon you'll be able to get that puppets tone with a lot of tweaks. I have played on the spider 2 on many occasions, one of my favourite amps, but I cant even afford one lol : (
-
Presuming you spend on the better Spider amps I think they do sound quite cool:
http://uk.line6.com/spiderii/sounds01.html
Slightly limited but adding pedals later would help sculpture your sound should you need it.
-
The SpiderII will get you there with some tweaking although I personally liked the Marshall AVT50 a little better.
You could get a used AVT50 and a Marshall 2x12 for under £400, a seperate closed back cab is a must for the tones you want.
The speakers in the SpiderII combos and cabs are rubbish, that's why I'd advise going with the 75w mono Spider head and a Marshall 2x12 if you go that route.
There are many decent SS amps in your range - you could get one of the cheaper Randall amps (they have face-melting gain levels too), check this baby out... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290023499467&indexURL=0#ebayphotohosting

Yo
I'm here to slam the spider 2, it sounds and feels like a toy. It feels like youre playing samples if your ears can handle it get it. Personally I can't stand the sound, I got one out of desparation but I'm now getting rid because I never use it.

Personally, I think you just think you like to look what you're talking about when in fact you've never even heard the amp.
some of us cant even afford one and your complaining about how rubbish it is! it makes me SICK! :wallbash:
I think you should shut your GOB and play me F sharp super locrain in all 5 positions NOW. lol
-
Firstly check your grammar:
"I think you just think you like to look what you're talking about"
Also read the damn post before u comment, as I clearly state I own a $%*n line 6 spider 2. So yes I think I've heard it.
Also if you cannot afford the amp don't bitch about it, get a job or save some money, line 6 is hardly expensive!?
Finally stop being such a god damn crybaby EMO myspace kid and take your teen angst somewhere else.
-
If you've got that sort of money thye GET THE DAMN ASHDOWN!!!!!!!!!!!!
The FA60 is what I use (although I've got an original British made one) and it does Metallica old and new perfectly. In fact it does pretty much everything perfectly. For ease of use you'll probably want to get a Digitech Grunge pedal for the clean channel (the tone's achieveable with just the amp, but switching from clean to driven mid song is problematic, although this is a problem with all 2 channel amps) to give you a heavy drive tone for more Lo Fi and vintage metal applications.
The clean tone is fantastic, with a nice woody thump 8)
-
I'm still thinking about it, might leave it a month or so depending on how much money i have.
-
Have you taken a Vox AD(enter wattage)VT for a test drive?
I just got one and I'm well impressed.
-
wow, didnt mean to upset you. Actaully I hate EMO, I have no emotions whatsoever : D
I think I may have upset him, oops.

why, what's wrong with that??? je ne pas compronde'

OK I'll learn to read as from today lol

there arent any jobs in music, have you ever tried looking? I dont get paid for playing guitar as I'm NOT famous, like you.
-

actually the RMC3 custom is my favourite wha! the crybaby isn't even close, it sounds like cr@p. EMO musicians aren't even proper muzos so they obviously dont know anything about the best guitar equipment.
here's a link for you : )
http://www.historic-scotland.gov.uk/index/carvedstones/graveyards.htm
check out the (researching your graveyard) bit and for gods sake, ligthen up mate!
-
Did you really need to make a seperate post quoting every line of his one post?
Just because someone disagree's with your opinion on an amp doesn't mean you need to start bitching at him.
I also said I disliked the Spider II in my first post, so it's not just Muso that doesn't like it.
-
I havent played a Spider II, but if the Flextones are anything to go by then its pretty awful, can get some ok sounds out of it but I even prefer my old Kustom KGA65 amp (which is for sale by the way ;))
