Got a 79 strat too! What sort of Pup's would sound best for a big full on tone?
Is it the Irish tours that do this the best? If you reading Jonathon, you could give me a quote on that too!
-
I think the Trilogies will give you a big full on tone.

I'm getting them in the Charvel. They would sound different in a Strat though. Tim/Jon'/Ol what would you suggest?

:guitar4: What type of neck/finger board have you got ? it will make a difference !! :D 8)

Have a listen to Steve's mothers milk clips - I think they have a great vintage but full on tone - not high gain but great sounding strat pups.
-
If you put the effort in with your picking, Apaches can sound great.
Mothersmilk have a bid more output but still got thet sort of woody crack that great strat singles have.
The tours help you out a bit, to me they sound like your hitting the hell out of teh strings, but without the effort. It's all down to the beefy midrange. It's a move away from the classic glassy strat tone, to a hotter bluesier/rockier sound.
Slowhands are in similar tone range, but not as bright as the ITs.

Gotcha. So Apaches give you more contol over your picking dynamics :?:
-
Basically yes, but that's not to say that any of the range are un-dynamic!
The Apaches can be rude if you want them to, just as well as they can do the cleans too. :P

I have had Apaches put into my 1976 Strat. Rosewood board I know but they can be rude as well as polite. As Tim has often said, don't be put off by the name. Personally I like the clarity and clean tone of Apache's ( not that I have personal experience of other Strat sets) but I used mine live a few nights ago for the first time and they covered all the bases I needed and also recived the thumbs up from my band mates ( except the drummer who lacks the cordination necessary to raise his thumbs whilst doing anything else) . They can break up nicely too- very dynamic and they reflect your playing. I play in a covers band btw so it is anything from 50's through to 90's though I also write and record a fair amount though have not yet used them in t'studio.

With a maple neck and board I'd be tempted to opt for Irish Tours as they're hotter, a little darker in the mids ala SRV/Gallagher and help keep the broken glass of that much maple at bay.
Check out the clips in the players room or give me a call and I'll talk it through in alot more detail.

Hmmm- ash body, maple neck and fingerboard....
I would go woith one of the warmer sounding pickups
I think that the Mothers Milk would be too glassy
I also think Irish tour.....

Thanks for the insight Tim, the clips do sound lovely!

Thanks Jonathon! I do like those warm single coil sounds :D
