May be a daft question have a spare switch have a set of apaches with middle rw/rp can it be put on a switch to be same polarity if I wanted?

in a word - NO.  you can reverse the coil direction, but you would have to turn the pickup upside down to reverse the magnet polarity.  If you want to do something you could set it to connect the middle pickup in series or parallel, that would give you a lot of tone difference.

Best use for the switch is to switch on either the neck pickup irrespective of where the 5 way switch is .

This gives 2 extra very usable sounds

Neck and bridge together (in position 1 on 5 way)
This will be a bit like a tele middle position

All 3 pickups on together (in position 2 on 5 way)
Good open , almost acoustic guitar sound

thought as much so had wired like feline said
