Rebel Yell Set in a MMan Axis.
Well just received them today and really fitted them in 20 minutes ago. Just did a very quick take direct through the Tonelab.
At a first impression the p-ups are quite trebly, but hell, what I was able to squeeze out of them, awrsome sustain too ... can't wait to play them through the cranked Bogner.
**EDIT** Meanwhile another clip was added on page 2 **/EDIT**

Sounds nice and crunchy to me :D Really like the sound of that Tonelab.
-
Just played for about 30 minutes through the Shiva ... OMG this is awesome! They are really really great if you want crazy sounds without having actually a metal pickup. The combination of Axis and RYs is indeed a winner combination!
I'll do some clips the coming days that will do the pickups justice, the TLab makes em all sound too similar ...
-
oh ffs, i had my mind set on Nailbombs in my musicman, now i've got this clip stuck in my head
:P
-
Nice tones my friend. Look forward to hearing more.
-
Great tone!!! Did you go for covers or not?
-
Fantastic-I can hear the enthusiasm in your playing- nice Floydy stuff in there.
-
Thanks guys, though I feel a bit bad as this was a no preparation no effort recording. But it's maybe the spontaneous feel that does the trick.
I went for Zebra reverse uncovered, exactly like the original DiMarzios.
There's one thing I still need to sort out, is that the screws of the outer coils are a bit long in the back. What do you guys think, do I need to cut them shorter or should I screw them out a bit so they get shorter on the pickup bottom?
The issue is because the pups are screwed directly into the body of the axis and at the moment they're not 100% parallel to the body.
Any tips welcome.

Sounds good, man.
Those Rebels sure like arena style reverb and delay. PDT_002
-
what an awesome sound
$%gin shite. aahahahahah Awesome.
-
Nice! You can definitely hear that 'crazy factor' in the RY's sound. :)

If it was my guitar, I'd rout a little trough in the body under the polepiece screws - or even drill six little holes for the ends of the screws to sit in.
If you raise the polepieces it's going to make the tone a little unbalanced in favour of the screw coils, and I'd have thought cutting the screws short would also have some effect on the tone.
Nice clip BTW!

Not sure. I raised them a bit yesterday (just one turn or so) and it looks better now. I hesitate to dig into the wood on the Axis, as I wanna reserve the possibility to put it back in original state (you never know).
Will post pics later to illustrate the thing a bit.

how long til the fuzz clips???
-
wow.....
-
Had first band practise with the "Rebel Axis" yesterday. Little Shiva was roaring like a wounded bear and squealing like a baby that's been taken away its toy!
Even my Laney 4x12 sounds great again :P
Will post some Rebel Shiva clips at the WE, especially for Mr. Healy to feed the GAS
-
OK, another one, a little weird as I used some D&B drums and altogether the recording ... well, you can hear the monitor sound through the SM57 as it's too early to crank anything, so volumes are very low here.
BUT, the Rebels are soooo fun, 10 times definition and 100 times harmonics
-
That sounds great- loved the riff in the back ground- as a bassist who has come over to the light side( :) I was riffing in my head. I really like your playing. Good to see D & B put to good use!
-
does the neck pickup of your rebel yell seem a bit mushy and inarticulate? I think mine might have been set too far my strings, i don't know. This is more apparent with cleans, my bridge cleans sound better than neck and thats not right.
-
Another clip, finally with a slightly louder amp (still not cranked though). Kinda "Bonham meets Kiss" inspired :)

No. I would call it dark and ballsy. It's not mushy or intransparent. It's got a different voice and less output than the Bridge (which I think is good, otherwise what are the two pickups for if not for different sounds?).
I'll make a clean clip with the neck to show you how nice it sounds.

This one sounds awesome! I must get a Bogner one day..
-
As promised, clean clip from neck.
Do you think this is muddy? Maybe depends on the viewpoint, but I don't ...
-
Doesnt sound muddy at all to me, pretty nice clean in my opinion.
-

Thanks man, I like it too. Kinda hard to record the dynamics of this baby. Bob savage said the Bogner was easy to record as opposed to his VHT UL.
And dude, I can tell you, there are also many many many things left that I must get one day ...

I think there's a bit of Ted Nugent in that riff too! Great clip.
-
im just saying mine does and that possibly my neck uphas been set too far away from the strings.
-
Oh I just thought.. any chance of any clips of your Crunch Box onto the clean channel?
-
Woah Hunter dude! 8) Your on fire again man! Fantastic clips mate. :D
I'm thinking you like the RY's! There mad rock pickups without going all metal on the sound. I like your bogner sound too! 8)
Mine have been removed form the Epi and are going into a custom build, so I'll have to wait a few months to get the feeling your having!
Mr muddy RY neck pup! Your set up must be wrong cos mine were great before they were put in to Project X! :D
-
Thanks for all the praise, yeah I'm on FIRE, but would rather play real loud with some dudes than into my Mac, but band practise is 1x a week only
So re the crunch box - it's played through the Epi VJ in a different recent post, but let's see if I will have time later to make one with the Bogner- I definitely love this box, and it's one of the cheapest (new) FX that I have.
-
Yeah I heard the clips into the VJ, would be nice to hear some done with a decent mic though instead of your laptop mic so we can hear its full sound :P If I like what I hear I'm definately getting one!
-
Wow that sounds awesome! Nice tone!
-
As promised, clean clip from neck.

Maybe a wee bit distorted... it's about how my RY neck with my les paul sounds with my vox ac30... I like it ;)
-
Good tone man, the bridge has that Vintage VH vibe and the swith when you go to the neck pickup is amazing, it has clarity yet its pretty dirty.
-
I like that Bogner and Rebel combo. ( 80 shairrock)
-
dude i wish I found your clips a few weeks ago ...before I decided to order cold sweats which are currently being returned in order to get rebel yells, your a monster of player btw
-
Thanks a lot, I'm very flattered. Though my technique and knowledge are much too poor to call me Monster of a Player.
Call that Joe Bonamassa, he deserves it. 8)
But thanks anyways, I was happy to read you say that

More Clips, done at virtually no volume with my new VHT 50ST/EL84.
It's harder to have the VHT sound OK without higher Volume, as this amp really needs a bit push on the power tubes (each amp does, but the Shiva is a bit easier to make sound big when it's at whisper/night levels).
But experimenting some positions and settings and you get quite good results. I have the strong feeling that the VHT might cut it better in the band.
The Axis has new strings too. There is a TRex RoomMate in the loop of the VHT.
What I find remarkeable is the lead sound I get in the middle position of the RebelYell set. This is on the last part of the distorted file around 1:10. I NEVER played lead in the middle position before on any pickup/guitar.

Love the demos (esp the distorted), your gilmour influences often comes to the fore in the distorted clips (it's meant as a complement BTW)
The other thing is theres often a strat like quality that I would normally associate with single coils when I hear your RY stuff, which I like a lot (a proper topend but with nicer mids).
Rob...
-
WOW! Amazing clips, I'm loving the tone, especially on the middle position as you said
sounded like Gilmour on steroids, probably because of the Pigs (am I right?) backing track :P
-
Thanks for these demos !
I am glad I ordered a set of RY's.
Can't wait to put them in my R9.
BTW I play a Shiva head too :)
-
liking the newer clips hunter, the VHT's cleans are nice.. and so is the overdrive.
-
Thanks all, but hey, you gotta wait until I have investigated ideal tubes and settings with this baby, the it will RAWK :)))
-
Lovely stuff Hunter-I love clean tones and the second clip was my favourite.
