Hi,
I have a LP style guitar, that doesn't have a maple cap. Its mahogany body, and maybe even a mahogany neck too.
I was wondering what the Maple cap adds, and how having a maple cap versus not having one would affect a pickup/guitar's sound. Anyone know?
-
Maple cap adds upper mids/highs harmonics to the body heavy tone of the mahogany. Some people also say the maple "cleans up" the muddiness tendency of the mahogany ...
-
I see, thanks for the info.
So would you recommend a pickup that has extra upper mids/high for the lacking maple cap?
-
Depends what tone you're after. I'd go mid-heavy and get a real meaty sound

Yes I would, maybe a VHII or a BKP91?
But you gotta ask Tim, he knows his babies much better - he always hit what I liked spot on!

Nice.
I have an Abraxas, but thinking of going higher in the output. Starting to get more pickup talk than Guitar, I'll ask Tim.

maybe something hot and bright would suit an all mahogany LP - gut feeling is a Nailbomb.

Tim told me once that a Nailbomb would be too middy in my all-mahogany Artist.

I have VHII's in a maple cap LP through a JCM800 - it's a bit bright! Killer crunch tones though.
Peterku, why did you change your name/re-register? (just curious)

I've gone with a Rebel Yell for my all-mahogany LP. But I dont have it installed yet so I can't tell you how well it works...
Body weight/thickness will affect the tone too. Mine is a thinner-body The Paul, so it's in-between an SG and LP really.

Thanks for the all mahogany information. Emailed Tim to see what he thought about Nailbomb with these guitars for harder rock/metal.
I'll report back.

Some old LP customs didnt have a maple cap
I believe Peter Frampton's "Frampton Comes Alive" era LP was all mahogany
I would go with a Cold sweat set or a Miracle man set
It'd be classic/heavy rock but that suits me!
-
I know these would be able to handle my metal needs..
Not sure about the others. I play in a band with 2 guitars that while has some metal influences, not really metal. And I like playing other things as well, but hard rock and metal are top 2!

I got a reply from Tim about Nailbombs in mahogany body and neck guitars.
He said no problem. Then I thought.....his V with Nailbombs is most likely all mahogany too.
