Hi there, don't laugh too hard but I inherited a marshall mg100dfx, which is my current amp, I'm looking to sell this in the near future to finance my next amp. I could use some ideas as I'm not too knowledgable on what good amps are out there, I'm looking for a small model, anything from 5-20w would be fine. Reverb would be nice to have.
I'm only gonna be using it at home and would like to be able to push the volume a bit without pissing off the neighbours :P. My guitar setup is a Godin Freeway Classic its H-S-H, soon to have a Rebel Yell set for the buckers and a Slow Hand for the single.
I'll throw some artist names in if that helps Trower, Hendrix, Gilmour, Page, Greenwood...
So far I looked at some of the smaller Kustom models and the Marshall AVT 20 but I noticed the latter is a hybrid amp, I'd rather get an all tube. My budget is £200-300 so nothing too expensive.

I was going to say Cornford until I read the last sentence of your post :)
-
Epi valve Jr (comes in head or combo) is 5w valve I believe, and isnt very expensive. The only trouble is that it doesnt have any tone controls, but as its such a cheap price I guess you could pick up an eq pedal to shape the tone a bit.

+1 or the Epi Valve Special, not too much more, and it comes with an EQ and reverb (methinks, not too sure, and i'm meant to be working, so i can't really check, sorry) :D:D:D:D

Well I realise that I might be budgetting too low, call the upper end 400 I guess.
-
look into the epiphone valve amps, pure tone but to a really nice budget :D:D

Laney LC15 or VC15.
-
I just got my epi. valve jr. yesterday and I can alredy say it pretty much epitomizes the late '60's guitar tones of peoples like Hendrix, clapton etc... Only thing is u might have to use a boost in front of it to get a sound any more modern than 1970. It is mighty cool though :D
-
I'd go with an old Wem combo - you can get the 1x12 or 1x15 versions fairly easily on ebay WELL within your budget and they will be ten times the amp that any modern equivalent will be for that sort of cash.
Look for the 2xEL84 version kicking out 15w - you can crank that at home without too much trouble and it's still loud enough to gig with.
A few pedals here and there will get you into the Trower, Hendrix, Gilmour, Page, Greenwood territory you want.

Good suggestion HTH. I played a WEM Clubman a while back and it 'felt' the most like a valve amp of any valve amp I've played, i.e. it compressed like hell when you turned it up :D It was priced at somewhere around £200, but I know you could get one for less than that. It was, however, very noisy and still quite loud (despite, I'm sure, only having a single output valve) and the treble response was nuts with the amp cranked, all of which put me off it a bit. It did have a great basic sound though, and it's certainly more interesting than your run-of-the-mill Laney LC15!
-
You should be able to tune the Wem in to tame any treble - they've all been ballsy, but not too trebly when I've had them in for repairs/services (also had one for a while).
You could try this baby on for size too... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/AMPEG-JET-11-15-WATT-VALVE-GUITAR-AMP-FLIGHT-CASE_W0QQitemZ170026898167QQihZ007QQcategoryZ10171QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I have a Laney LC15 which I really like. It is all valve and has a great little tone.
-
my friend Joe had a WEM combo 50watt thing years ago and It sounded fantastic, I had a Selmer Treble n Bass 50 at the time..
Theres loads of great alternatives to Marshall, Fender and Vox that sound just as good and are vintage..

Those WEM amps are so cheap I'd actually make some dough in the process of selling my mg to get one! Seems interesting, probably get a more origional tone than going with something run of the mill, thanks for the info!

£200-300
+ your amp?
I;ve seen Cornford Harlequins on ebay for about £500.
Would suit you down to the ground, or a www.matamp.co.uk MiniMatt and 1x10?
Low power, built well, good tone for what you wany to do i think :)

A few pedals here and there will get you into the Trower, Hendrix, Gilmour, Page, Greenwood territory you want.
Actually that reminds me, I was looking to buy pedals, could you be more specific on what you think would be good for these tones?
I was thinking of buying a multifx pedal, like a zoom or something, alternatively a few good select ones, I only have a crybaby at the moment.

The Line6 DM4 will give just about any overdrive / distortion / fuzz you could ever want. Should get one for under £150 used on ebay.
actually, here's one for £90... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=330025524379&indexURL=1#ebayphotohosting

+1.
Laney vc15.
-
^yup or LC... depending on what hes after i guess... although i dunno what the two compare like...
-
well, from my comparison of the lc 30 and vc30 (i didn't bother to try th lc15, since I didn't really like the lc30, though I have tried the vc15), the lc is a little more american/fendery in tone, while the vc is more british, think vox (kind of), though they both have their own tone, obviously.

Dave - whilst I know that you've tried loads of gear and mentioned it here I have completely forgotten what you have got as your own rig?
I'm sure you've listed it but I cant find it ............
What guitar are you pushing through which amp at present?
-
^ engl savage se through a laney 4x12 (vintage 30's), with (at the moment) a kramer striker (one of the newer, korean ones, unfortunately :(). I have an Ibanez rg470 as well, but it's kind of out of commission as I need to get it drilled so I can fit my new Gotoh trem... but once i get that done, i'll probably be selling the kramer, I just can't get on with the neck (stupid narrow nut!).
Thanks for asking, jonathan!

Epi Valve Jnr is very nice. If you go for the head version it has outputs for 4, 8 and 16ohms, so it'll work with any cab, plus it doesn't hum like the combo does (or used to anyway, they may have fixed that).
Only thing to remember is you won't get a dirty sound out of it at neighnour friendly volumes unless you use a pedal of some sort, as even at 5w it gets quite loud before the distortion kicks in.
I plug my Vox Tonelab SE in to mine and it sounds great (made my old Pod sound better as well).
A Minimat from Matamp would be a better option if you want to get it distorting at reasonable volumes without a pedal, as it has a built in attenuator. Costs about twice what the Epi does, but is still well within your budget.
-
 Sorry, should prably have also said that whilst the Minimat will give distortion a decent volumes without a pedal we're not talking Marshall or Mesa meltdown type distortion. More like classic blues rock style.

There's a WEM Clubman in the latest Guitarist mag classifieds for £120 - Buy it before I do!!
-
I'd say look into a Laney LC. For the same price as a Valvestate Marshall you could get an all tube Laney combo. They sound blimming good too.
