Title: BKP for vintage Slayer?
Post by: FinlandGregor on September 14, 2006, 07:19:57 PM
Okay...so maybe 20+ years isn't bloody vintage  :D

At any rate, which Bareknuckle bridge pup would be a good start for getting those old King & Hanneman tones from Show No Mercy, Haunting the Chapel, and Hell Awaits?  I think they had the best tone (and wrote their best songs) back in the day.

The guitar for this project is a 1988 USA BC Rich Warlock that features a bolt-on maple neck, alder body, ebony fingerboard, and Kahler 2315 tremolo.  (I've got the Marshalls!  :) )

Many thanks

Not sure, because I haven't played the pickups, but I would guess Nailbomb or Miracle Man for thrash/speed metal.

Call me stupid, but...... if someone is trying to mimic a players "sound" why not use what they use, used? You have the Marshalls so why not  the pups?

Just a thought.

They use EMG 81's. So a Miracle Man would be perfect. Slayer rocks!

You wouldn't be a very good salesmen would you?  plus being able to get an EVEN BETTER sound than the originals has more sense of achievement and totally rocks.

Yea MiracleMan definately, I find it alot more defined than my 81 plus it has a sight mid scoop which I think is what Slayer tends to have.  Plus even huger/tighter bass.

Many thanks for the replies.  I wish I did know what they used back then; it would make it simpler.  I've heard conflicting statements about what pups they used on those older recordings; the Dimarzio Megadrive and Super Distortion come up frequently, so I've placed an order for those two.  However, I would like to use Bareknuckles.  At any rate, I do know that EMG's didn't enter the picture until after Seasons in the Abyss.  I don't care much for those coffinblocks anyway.  They have great tightness, clarity, and punch...but they're way too bloody "dry" sounding to my ears.

Cheers  8)

Slayer were using EMGs from the Reign In Blood era onwards so for those tones I'd suggest the Miracle Man.

For older Slayer (Hell Awaits) I'd go with something comparable with a Super Distortion - maybe the Rebel Yell or Holy Diver (????)

It is worth mentioning that the pickups used by 'name' players often vary considerably from those available to us 'ordinary people'

Also specs change considerably over the years, the current SD JB is nothing like the original version.

Nope you're wrong.

Show no Mercy era = Bill Lawrence

Hell Awaits = Bill Lawrence or Dimarzio Super Distortion

Reign in Blood = Dimarzio Super Distortion

South of heaven = Probably a Dimarzio Super Distortion

Season in the Abyss = Dimarzio Megadrive

Divine Intervention to Present = EMG's

are you talking about what they used in the studio or live? - I saw them on both the South Of Heaven & Seasons In The Abyss tours and also have video footage those tours - EMGs all the way.

on the old Hell Awaits footage you can see them using what looks like cream DiMarzio Super Distortions (doubt they where PAFs, heh)

HAHAA. Here you go. War Ensemble video. Look at the very beginning at Kerry's neck pickup. Pole pieces, not EMG's!

yep, Kerry King is using passives in that guitar on that clip but you can clearly see Jeff Hanneman using EMGs in that Jackson during the first solo.

let's not hijack the thread eh - all I'm saing is that for early Slayer a Super Distortion type pickup will get you in the ballpark and for South Of Heaven onwards EMGs would nail that vibe better.
