Title: BKP Equivalent to the Dimarzio X2N
Post by: Crazy_Joe on September 16, 2006, 04:54:31 PM
Dimarzio X2N

Magnet: Ceramic
Output: 510
DC Resistance: 15.8

Treble ------ 6.5
Mids     -------- 6.5
Bass   ------ 5.5

I'm guessing the Miracle Man since it is a ceramic magnet.

Looking at those numbers I'd say the output & eq are actually closer to a Nailbomb but it's not ceramic & I doubt the MM would disappoint :)

However I've never owned a guitar with an X2N so YMMV...

Didn't Chuck Schulinder use an X2N in his BC Rich Stealth?

Neither sound exactly like the X2N

the X2N had 3 ceramic magnets and tended to overload the front end of amps - some say it has a slightly choked sound

The Miracle man will maybe have the cut due to the ceramic magnet but be a lot more tuneful and vintage influenced than the X2N

Soundwise in my experience - the Nailbomb isnt that close - much beefier and more rounded in tone. May be the magnet difference....

I do find it amusing that no matter what pickup people ask for similarities to - somebody always pipes in with Nailbomb.
It must have it's own fanclub on here (or maybe a secret Max Cavalera fan club instead)

It looks like it will have similar characteristics to the Miracle Man but the EQ screams Nailbomb.

My default BKP to recommend (& probably my favourite) is the Holy Diver but even I couldn't contrive to make it fit the bill here! :)

Chuck did have an X2N in his guitar, and i think Michael Romeo used to use one, or something like that.

Mike still does use that in the bridge of his ESPs.  He uses a Tone Zone in the neck.  I used to be "Keeper of the FAQ" for the Symphony X mailing list a few years ago... so this question came up quite a few times.  Prior to switching to the passive DiMarzios, he was an EMG guy with his Triaxis.  Once he made the move to Line 6 Pod Pro's and Vetta heads for the live stuff, he ditched the EMGs.

Hope that helps.

Just get the ______ pickup :)

Thankfully BKP doesn't make anything like the X2N. I've heard one or two and didn't like it one bit. The goal of that pickup is to get a totally insane flatout sound.

BKP does make a pickup with that same purpose: The Custom (ceramic) Warpig.

Hey Dakine,

Just wanted to ask where in Tex-ass you are located.  I'm in a little 'burb of Houston.

Related to the BKPs in question, did I miss the description of the tone curves associated with each of the BKP's on the main product site, or is it just not there.  I realize that assigning an arbitrary number like DiMarzio and SD do might be somewhat a load of ca-ca, but at least to get a relative comparison of each BKP it might be somewhat helpful.  I might have missed some posts on this very subjest since I'm a fairly new member here.  If so, I apologize and please just direct me to the search function with a nice literal slap to the head.  :)

Thanks,
Jeff

There arent any tone charts at the moment. What we know is from the experience of the forum members and the BKP guys (Tim and Steve) describing them.

There are tone charts and clips planned for the new site. I asked Tim about it when I ordered a pickup a little while ago: they have soundclips of all the pickups ready to go (the humbuckers at least in the same guitar, same amp same settings so the clips are actually usefull!) and Tim nad the engineer made some notes on the EQ differences between the pickups for tone charts.

I would say that this will still be useless for comparison with what duncan and dimarzion have made independantly, because theres no common refference, and the sound of a pickup changes from guitar to guitar, amp to amp, ear to ear, even. They may all be 'right' on the day they were made: a perfectly fair comaparison, but you cant compare two lots of relative descriptions, if you see what I mean.

And after moving BKs around some of my guitars I've found that they are very transparent indeed: they let more of the guitars soung through than anything else I've used, and sound very different in different woods.

All told, I found the expereince of other people that have used the pickups in question is more helpfull than just a set of numbers someone near as damnit pulled out of thin air, especially comparing between brands.

On that note, I'd say the X2N is closest to the miracle man, but its more like an early-teenage miracle man in kappa trackies and high on crack. Its got much more gain and can have a bit too much of a hard edge ot the tone thats difficult to control.

Apologies for the long post. I sincerely hope no one read it, its not worth it (its a particularly boring sunday afternoon in MDV land).

No worries.  Thanks for the feedback.  The thing I hate the most about being new to a forum is knowing if a particular subject has been "a horse beat into a fine paste" in previous threads.  Sometimes the search engine helps... more often than not it doesn't.  I appreciate the response.  Like I said, I don't plan on comparing BKP pickup A to SD or DiMarzio pickup B, as it's meaningless from a tone chart comparison.  But at least for a reference of one BKP to another, I think it'll be helpful and I am glad Tim and gang have plans to do so.

Thanks again,
Jeff

From what i have heard (from songs + people who have them) the X2N is the best metal pickup DiMarzio have and it is better than Seymour Duncan's metal pickup attempt, i havn't heard a bad word about them.

well, the duncan high gain metal pickups are complete cr@p (in my opinion), so it's not really much of an achievement if the X2N is better... (i haven't tried the x2n)

Eric,

Gotcha.  Had a lot of buddies in college from Centerville in that general area.  Never made it over there much, myself.  Mostly travelled in the Akron-Canton area and then to Columbus to see my bro at OSU and Cincy for school.  Five of the longest years of my life were spent in the hellhole known as the U of C.  Graduated on my birthday in 1995 and haven't been back since.  Good riddance to bad rubbish.  :)

Jeff: Just a quick question on American logic - why would you call a game "Football" if the majority of the game involves maneuvering the ball with your hands - they only kick to restart play, for one of those penalty thingies or when the team doesn't want the ball anymore (never understood that myself)...and even on those occasions when they do kick it, they have to get someone to hold it still for them

Dude, you are trying to use LOGIC when it comes to sports?!?!?  Let me remind you that the average citizen of the Earth, be they in the States, Europe, Mongolia, Timbuktu or the Middle East, is about as logical (or possesses as much common sense) as the common household plant.  Seeing as how American football was created by such a man, I'm guessing logic didn't really factor into it.  Having played the s-word game here for 6-7 years as a kid, and then a season or two for our corporate team about 10 years ago, I think I'm qualified to say that your term for the game is better than the s-word... or at least more logical.  To be honest, I'm not quite sure what a better name for football would be.  "Throw Ball"?  "Run/Kick/Pass Ball"?  "Oblong Ball"?  Either way, I'm still a rabid fan of the college game.  The S-word has long since bored me to tears... as does baseball, basketball and pro American Football.  Then again, I play ice hockey in Houston... what the hell do I know?  :)

Toodles,
Jeff

I don't know whether to be proud or frightened.  :)

How 'bout proud that I'm frightened?  Frightened that I'm proud?  Ah hell... I wish I was home with the ol' guitars right now.  Friggin had to work from home until after midnight and had no chance to practice guitar.  Sucks when work intrudes on home life.  *barf*

Thanks for the welcome, guys.

Jeff

PS - My Avatar is a character from an insane cartoon played on the US cable channel, Nicktoons.  The show is called "Invader Zim".  It's very whacked out , but funny nonetheless.   Not something you would watch with the under 6 crowd... but funny to pre-teens and me.  :)  You can google it and come up with lots of info.  It was cancelled a few years ago and I believe got such a cult following with the repeats being shown that they recently started airing new episodes.  At least that's my understanding.

LOL.  I'm a DSP A/V Systems Engineer for Texas Instruments.  Used to primarily do audio stuff like mp3 encoders and decoders, surround sound and virtual surround sound programming and the like.  Now I am doing imaging stuff including becoming our group's newest "expert" on MPEG4.  Right now, I'm stuck on a "time critical" issue dealing with a new software release and my job is to proof all the damn documentation.  And I'm not kidding... it's written by dudes from Bulgaria.  It's not the world's best spelling or grammar... but kudos to people who know more than one language.

Ahh, cool.  So does he dress up in a giant foam rubber suit made to look like a bareknuckled fist?  I can imagine him hitting all the great music industry shows like NAMM and Musikmesse dressed like that.

Sambo: "Hi!  Hey, can I play that new Brian Moore guitar?"
Brian Moore rep: "Dude, you are a giant fist.  How the hell would you play it?!?"
Sambo:  "Oh.  Yeah, well... BKP RULES!  BKP RULES! BKP RULES!"

Sambo scurries off to the next booth to preach the word of BKP.

:)

Smell ya later,
Jeff

Hell yeah. I was the one dressed up like a giant bowling ball that was on fire,  trying to preach the gospel of the Engl Fireball.  Unfortunately, I couldn't get the the fire part to work... and the black paint I used looked purple under the flourescent lights... so everyone just thought I was a giant grape and kept yelling at me that the Fruit Of The Loom convention was next door.  *sigh*  Sometimes it just doesn't pay to preach the good word, you know?

Later,
Jeff

Dang it!  You done figured it out already, Sambo?  An' here I thought we were bein' all clever and stealth-like.  :)

A ten-gallon hat is your stereotypical American oowboy hat.  Think "The Lone Ranger" and all that.  For a little more background:

The Stetson company and Texas Bix Bender (who wrote  Hats and the Cowboys Who Wear Them) say that "ten-gallon" refers to how much liquid (certainly not brains) such hats could carry in their crowns. This story is wrong.  John Batterson Stetson (1830-1906), who is sometimes credited with inventing the cowboy hat, was from New Jersey. 'Nuff said. You'll also find the myth that ten-gallon hat referred to the unit of capacity in  The Cowboy Encyclopedia by Dr. Richard W. Slatta. Slatta is from North Carolina. Uh huh.

So here is la pura verdad: "Ten-gallon hat" is the result of a linguistic mix-up. "Galón" is the Spanish word for "braid." Some vaqueros wore as many as ten braided hatbands on their sombreros, and those were called "ten galón hats." English speakers heard gallon. Real cowboy hats came to Texas from the Spanish via Mexico (unless you want to go all the way back to Genghis Khan and the Mongolian horsemen, who apparently wore something similar).

Hope that clears it up.  Once again, it was some dumba$$ murdering a language and coming up with the wrong meaning in their own native tongue.

So endeth todays history lesson.  :)

Professor Jeff-Bob
