:D I`m more into songs than players allthough i do like shredders & blues men. But here`s a list of the players that made me think Wow wish ii could do that !
1 EVH
2 Alex Lifeson
3 Vai, Satch, Timmons, Johnson, there all great instrumentalists.
4 Angus & Malcolm Young. If i could have been a guitar player in any band ever i wish i`d have been Malcolm Young ! but i loved Angus lead playing
5 Neil Schon
6 Peter Green
7 Huw Llyod Langton
8 Gary Moore [ Rock period ]
9 Michael Schenker/Randy Rhoads...before there was RR there was Schenker !!
10 Ted Nugent he may be a racist but he really could play & i loved his sense of humour !!
:D 8)

i don't really rate guitarists by how good they are at playing, it's more to do with whether or not i enjoy listening to their music, rather than me thinking, "damn, i wish i could play that fast..."
so...
1. Jimmy Page
2. Matt Bellamy
3. Pete Townshend
4. Slash
5. Mark Knopfler
6. Kelly Jones
7. Prince
8. Jimi Hendrix
9. Carlos Santana
10.David Gilmour
-
Michael Romeo
That is all.
-
1. Randy Rhoads (Ozzy)
2, Vini Reilly (the Durutti Column)
3. Robert Smith (the Cure)
4. Jeff Loomis (Nevermore)
5. Dave Gregory (XTC)
6. Dave Mustaine (Megadeth)
7. Robin Guthrie (Cocteau Twins)
8. Paul Gilbert (Racer X/solo)
=9. Rachel Lancaster (Chippewa Falls)
=9. Laura Lancaster (Chippewa Falls)
There are at least another 58 guitarists I love right now, but these are the players I'm listening to the most. Having said that, I keep a guitar right next to my PC and the bands I spend the most time jamming along with are Muse, Iron Maiden and Queen. Honestly? I love hearing anyone playing any kind of music, because the guitar is the best instrument in the world and I could never get enough of it. Genre, technique and tone are less important to me as a consumer of music than sheer joy and attitude.

Ihshan - Emperor
Abbath - Immortal \ I
Tony Iommi - Black Sabbath
Zakk Wylde - Ozzy \ BLS

-
1 - Dave Gilmour
2 - Tony Iommi
3 - Stevie Ray Vaughan
4 - George Harrison

8 - Angus and Malcolm Young
9 - Dave Murray, Adrian Smith and Janick Gers
10 - Slash and Izzy
So many others to pick from. Satch and Vai, Jake Lee, Clapton, the list goes on. You could ask for the top 100 I'd still feel I was leaving some out.
-
OK, it's favourites, not "greatest" and certainly not "best" (because music isn't an athletic competition). In alphabetical order (to remove any possible bias):
Ritchie Blackmore
Roy Buchanan
Robben Ford
Marty Friedman
Tony Iommi
Jake E Lee
Alex Lifeson
Uli Jon Roth
Michael Schenker
Robin Trower
Could have easily added many, many more, but that'll have to do. And I've gone for individuals, but I'd love to include the guys from AC/DC, Maiden and Trouble.

-
Just a shot in the dark, but do you mostly play acoustic Elliot?
-
Pierre Bensusan what a fantastic player! thanks for reminding me about him, I had almost forgotten. Good to see so many diverse guitars here.
-
Pierre Bensusan is the DADGAD specialist, isn't he?
I'd like to get into more acoustic music, especially traditional Celtic/British stuff, but I don't know where to start. Can anyone recommend any "key" albums?
(Edit: I mean "key" in the sense of definitive, not necessarily different tunings! :) )
-
Tony McManus is a great celtic player - although I find his albums a little over produced - also Davey Graham's (the inventor of DADGAD)'s The Complete Guitarist is a rip roaring foray into celtic stuff.
-
Some that haven't been mentioned yet but worth listening to:
Brian Setzer
BB King
Les Paul
Django Reinhart (did I spell that right?)
Tony Iommi
And it can't be said more that every rock musician should listen religeously to AC/DC with the Young bros.

Oh, and can I squeeze Joe Bonamassa in?
Oh yes, good call! :D He's got the blues thing going, but with enough of a rock sensibility to keep it lively. Not one for the blues purists, but I think he's excellent. Nice guitar collection too.

In some form of order, but its not a ranking, these are the guitarists that I do or have enjoyed listenning to the most, and have inspired me to play. I dont think they're technically the best at all (though some are pretty ninja).
Kurt cobain: I dont rate him at all now, but I still like a nirvana tune every now and then. BUT he made me pick the guitar up in the first place, 8 short years ago.
James hetfield: Made me not put it down very soon afterward!
Aaron turner (Isis. old man gloom).
Jeff loomis (nevermore):
Karl sanders/ dallas toler wade (nile): one of the best guitar duos around
Muhammed Suicmez (necrophagist). Not so hot on them now, but they got me into the whole tech-death thing, which I currently love.
Phill Keagy: Simply beautifull melody and harmony.
Tommy emanuel: similar reason: never fails to raise my mood.
Willie alder/Mark morton/Chris alder (lamb of god. I know chris is a drummer, but LoG have a synergy between the guitars and the drums that most bands only dream about, and I dont think you can seperate them. Check out as the palaces burn to see what I mean!
Laurent lebec (pelican). I dont like the new album, but Pelican and Austrilasia openned my eyes to what you can do with arrangements and layers, and that you really dont need a vocalist.
-
I don't think I've seen Eric Clapton up here. I saw him at MSG in NY and he was in top form. Doyle Bramhall II and Derek Trucks were also on guitar.
-
how come nobody has mentioned Richard Thompson - that guy is amazing.
other than that I have fairly standard guitar heroes, here's some of them...
Pete Townsend
Jeff Hanneman / Kerry King
Muddy Waters (slide guitar king)
Angus & Malcolm Young
Zakk Wylde
Jimi Hendrix
James Hetfield (not that arsed about Hammet's playing in the main)
Clapton (early stuff)
Pepper Keenan (riff monster)
Juliana Hatfield
-
1. Tony Iommi (GOD)
2. Randy Rhoads (Jesus)
3. Kirk Hammet (The Holy Spirit)
4. Zakk Wylde (Also jesus)
:D
I more into Tony than any of the others but I also Like

My CURRENT favourites, in no particular order:
Tommy Emmanuel - solo
(I actually prefer his electric stuff, but it's all good. He's almost fast enough to be considered a 'shredder', but prefers to be melodic. and he's Australian! :D )
Steve Morse - Steve Morse Band, Dixie Dregs, Deep Purple
(Technical wizard, love his solos and playing style, did the most groundbreaking prog music ever with the Dixie Dregs, and made Deep Purple heavier than ever! Awesome)
Daron Malakian - System of a Down
(Innovative, crazy riffs. Not really technichal, but it sounds cool)
John Petrucci - Dream Theater
(Brought prog to the masses, shreds like a beast, but is an AWESOME melodic player)
Adrian Belew - King Crimson, Frank Zappa
(Melodic, innovative, technical. Quirky in an good way.)
Paul Gilbert - Racer X, Mr Big, Solo
(He taught Buckethead! Enough said!)
Buckethead - Too many bands to name.
(One of the most diverse, talented musicians EVER - He would release an awesome shred metal album, and then release an awesome, entirely acoustic album. The most innovative shredder in the world. God)
Ritchie Blackmore - Deep Purple, Rainbow
(Defined the sound of Deep Purple. For me, he played a bigger part in inventing shred than Yngwie. Love the sound, love the music.)
There are heaps more, but I couldn't be bothered to write about them.
-

You like him, dont you?
Ritchie Blackmore - Deep Purple, Rainbow
(Defined the sound of Deep Purple. For me, he played a bigger part in inventing shred than Yngwie. Love the sound, love the music.)
Considering the attention Page and Iommi get, I think its criminal Blackmore isn't given more credit.
Oh yeah, and I think I'll add Van Halen and Matt bellamy to my top 10 while im at it.
-
In this exact order :D :D
1. Richie Sambora (has a lot of detail to some of his playing!)
2. Alexi Laiho
3. Eddie Van Halen
4. Scott Gorham / John Sykes (Brilliant when they play together!)
5. Michael Schenker
6. Zakk Wylde
7. James Hetfield
8. Jimi Hendrix

Jimi Hendrix - Jimi Hendrix Experience
Jimmy Page - Led Zeppelin
Eric Clapton - Cream/Derek and the Dominos, etc
Matt Bellamy - Muse
James Hetfield - Metallica
David Gilmour - Pink Floyd
Adam Jones - Tool
John Butler - John Butler Trio

Johnny Greenwood - Radiohead
Darrell "Dimebag" Abbott - Pantera
Daron Malakian - System of a Down
Peter Green - Fleetwood Mac
John Frusciante -Red Hot Chilli Peppers
Jeff Buckley - ummmm aye (So good I want his version of Hallelujah played at my funeral, not that I plan on dying soon)
Keith Richards - Rolling Stones
John Lennon/George Harrison - The Beatles
Daniel Johns - Silverchair
Jón Ţór “Jónsi” Birgisson - Sigur Rós
Gees this is just the obvious ones though, list could go on for days, and I can't even remember some of the names of people in some bands that I admire.
S'pose I could mention Jeff Beck for making me pick up a guitar after seeing him on Jools Holland even though I don't listen to his music an awful lot.
-
Ritchie Blackmore - Deep Purple, Rainbow
(Defined the sound of Deep Purple. For me, he played a bigger part in inventing shred than Yngwie. Love the sound, love the music.)
Considering the attention Page and Iommi get, I think its criminal Blackmore isn't given more credit.
Amen to that.

I mean, listen to the neoclassical stuff Ritchie Blackmore did... It's just like Yngwie but better, and not as fast.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
someone else who appreciates him that isnt a 'scene-kid'!!!!
lol.
i know a lot of people slag him off, but i think his phrasing is absolutely fantastic... the way he fits solos into songs is (in my opinion) second to none nowadays.
im not trying to big him up like a little avenged sevnfold fanboy because 'wowxxoz he playz soo fast!!!11111', i really genuinely think hes a great player.
i cant remember who it was, but a guitarist from some other band talked about him in an interview, saying that they toured together, and that he wasnt expecting much at first, but by the end of the tour he considered him a musical genius.
a lot of people dont realise he actually went to a music school/university and isnt just another typical shredder. his dad plays some nice acoustic as well, as does he himself.
anyway, sorry about the bio, ive made it out like hes the best player ever in the history of the world.
didnt mean to do that at all! just surprised that someone else actually appreciates him.
personally i love Page, hes probably my personal favourite...
cant think of a top ten as such though.
-
Ughh.. I dont like that Synyster guy at all. He's ok but nothing special - instantly forgettable to me.
My favourites are something like:
-Paul Gilbert
-Michael Schenker
-Page
-Alex Lifeson
-EVH
-Slash
-John Sykes
-George Lynch
-Mike Amott
-Angus/Malcolm Young
-Mikael Akerfeldt/Peter Lindgren
something like that :)
edit - Tom Morello! How could I forget him?!!?

No particular order, and plenty I've missed. They come to mind though.
-
in no order:
Zakk Wylde

Pin & Dan Weller (sikth)
Mikael Akerfeldt (for his soloing (not really shredding) skill and songwriting ability)
Willie Adler & Mark Morton (BRUTAL RIFF MASTERS)
Brent Hinds & Bill Kelliher (Mastodon)

angus young
john fruscinate
jeff beck
steve vai
eric johnson

-
Hey there, I seem to have some more in my favourites :)
Angus Young, deserves mention on his own IMO for those times in the second half of their set, shirtless, when if you're lucky your pure divne RAWK Angus comes up to earth ...
Tom Morello should get more credit too, he is a riff genius.
Also:
Dave Mustaine
Kieth Richards
John Squire (Stone Roses)
Johnny Marr (The Smiths)
El Hefe / Eric Melvin from NOFX, their tempo changes are proper job.
David Gilmour
A nod for Ritchie Balckmore too. But not in a witches hat. Oh no
And as a SG totting Warpig lover can't leave out Mr. Tony Iommi
-
Really fonfused as to why I'm the only person to have mentioned Becker so far :S
-
Jason Becker is possibly the most underrated guitarist of all time. I personally like him a lot more than Yngwie.
-
I mean, listen to the neoclassical stuff Ritchie Blackmore did... It's just like Yngwie but better, and not as fast.
+1 here.
Not as fast = better playing and listening pleasure
-
Did anyone mention Rhandy Rhoads?
'cos if not. someone should have ...
So I'm adding him to my list :)
-
^ ^ ^ ^
Oops  forgot about him...
And I'm adding Zakk Wylde too
-

1. John Frusciante
... and the rest:
Buckethead
Jerry Cantrell
Dimebag
Paul Gilbert
Dave Gilmour
Tom Morello
Slash
EVH
Randy Rhoads
And Synyster Gates? Hahaha, don't make me laugh - he's living proof that being able to sweep pick and all that bollocks doesn't make you even remotely interesting.
-
2, Vini Reilly (the Durutti Column)
5. Dave Gregory (XTC)
7. Robin Guthrie (Cocteau Twins)
I'm glad to see somebody elses enjoys players that don't simply race up & down the fretboard

That was a good bump. Not a bad idea to resurrect this thread.
Jason Becker
Shawn Lane
Jimi Hendrix
...and the rest. :D
Steve Vai, Marty Friedman, Al di Meola, Paul Gilbert (the best rock guitarst around today), Gary Moore, John Petrucci. I'll reserve the 10th space for whoever I forgot, that I will end up beating myself over. It always happens when I make a top 10 that I forget someone really important.

When I can afford it - They'll be dropped into my Ibanez. And it'll be a Miracle Man and a Cold Sweat in the Viper.
-
i'm getting a piece of this action, 10 is quite a high number... so don't expect these to be in order:
brian tatler
pete townshend
tony iommi
kk downing
rudolf schenker
michael schenker
john sykes
steve jones
malcom young
albert king
quite a few rhythm players and flying v players on my list. i'm sure with more thought i'd change this list a bit and add/remove players. i'm already tempted to add richie blackmore to this list in fact...
-
1. Vinnie Moore
2. Yngwie Malmsteen
3. Dann Huff
4. Tony Macalpine
5. Joe Satriani
6. Steve Morse
7. Paul Gilbert
8. Michael Romeo (Symphony X - How could I forget? T_O will kill me ).
9. Reb Beach
10. Steve Lukather.
-
Not saying these are THE top ten, but they are MY top 10
1. EVH
2. David Gilmoure
3. Angus Young
4. Hendrix
5. Randy Rhodes
6 Glen Tipton
7. Jimmy Page
8. Joe Perry
9. Richie Blackmore
10 Zakk Wylde
Why I didn't include:
1.Steve vai - This is what a computer would sound like if it were programmed to play guitar.
2Slash - Yes his stuff was cool; but same sound same pentatonic solos ? Saw him at the hammersmith and was totally underwhelmed - the other guy from VR seriously played the better solos!
-
1.Steve vai - This is what a computer would sound like if it were programmed to play guitar.
Vai has more feeling in one note than those players listed have in their entire careers.
And a good day to ya.
-
Don't get me wrong i'm not slating him; but there is such a thing as over engineering.
It all just sounds a bit to clinical to me.
Didn't you put hendrix in your list above vai anyway!
-
No... that was...uh... an illusion. >_> <_<
-
Bobby Charlton
-
I don't know why I said that-must be because I am slightly drunk and I think everything is funny.
-
Whats with the Bobby Charlton one?
The next Rammstein guitarist might be someone like Claudia Schiffer :P
