Post by: JamesHealey on September 21, 2006, 08:22:26 PM
Im considering this 50watt head over the Bogner Shiva..

anyone had any experience with this amp? or want to give any feedback as to why it's better/worse than the shiva??

Also what kinda prices will i be paying in the uk, including import tax?

I think if you wanna get a Splawn you should get the QuickRod, not the Competition. The new QR has a useable Clean Channel.

But hey James, I can just tell you, had band rehearsal tonight and went without FX (too lazy to lug it around) and MAAAAN Shiva baby was awesome, I'm digging it more and more.

But hey, if you wanna sound 80s, get a Splawn :)

Splawn is the hot rodded Marshall tone you've heard on a million metal albums, only better.

It sounds nothing like the Shiva. I have played both many times.

If you're serious about the Splawn, call the man himself (Scott Splawn).

Personally, I cannot give it a high enough recommendation. I still get goosebumps every time I turn it on!

Im guessing with Splawn there isnt really an issue of quality.. or so with the Bogner it's just im going through endless lists of stuff I play and sounds I'd even use if i was playing something a little less rock orientated.. and im still thinking the whole hotrodded marshall thing is deffinatly on the table..

The shiva sounds a bit "under-powered" for me needs, but the Splawn could be a bit unversitile..

Hi, I have the Splawn Competition and it is the Best Marshall ever(words of Tony Rombola), hand wire, built , looks, quality of materials, service(talk to the guy himself) and the sound( I was looking for a Marshall sound, but with something extra, distinctive )I have not tried the Shiva. But if you decide to order Splawn, the waiting list is long. Patience my friend     :)

Have you actually played the Shiva? I don't wanna sell you my own preferences, but just wanna make sure you get your own impression.

I also went to the shops with my clear idea of what the amps do and don't from different forums. It was just when I plugged my guitar into the Bogner and hit the first chord, I knew that this is it (before I was looking more into a Soldano, Diezel, XTC Classic area) ...

You need to get your own impression. If I were you, I'd only get a Splawn if I'm very sure about that type of sound, as you cannot test it. I'd like to have a Quickrod too, but I even didn't like the SLO100 in the shop, although I thought before that would be the amp of all dreams. So buying an amp simply on spec and other users' opinion may well be a failure.

I'm from England and would totally love to try out or hear live a Splawn, so if anyone has one let me know.

I'm currently lusting after a Splawn Pro Mod. The sound clips just sound perfect. It's one of the few products I've heard sound clips for that I thought,"That's it!!"

This is a not-quite-ready-for-prime time clip some of you might find educational. It's a Cold Sweat into the Quick Rod's Plexi channel (1st gear).

MP3 didn't help the sound at all - I have heard the original and it is amazing.  However, as you are in England, why don't you check out Matamp?  They have a couple of amps that even TO loves!!!  The best thing is you can go there and try them out first.

Because Matamp do not make any amps that are based off of Marshalls, nor do they have any interest in making a metal amp based off of any Marshall designs.

Hey man, I tried out a shiva and a quickrod and ended up going with a quickrod.  I think the Splawns get a bad rap for only sounding eighties.  I think there is definitely a "splawn" sound out there, but the amp is super responsive to whatever you are playing and I just played a jazz gig on my splawn using the clean channel and it worked just fine for what I was doing.  I've found that if you experiment a little bit the splawn works for you if you are willing to put some time in and dial in your tone.  One thing I've found with the splawn is that it absolutely cuts through the mix.  I've never had so little problem being heard in my life.  Its a superior product to anything that is currently on the market.

Did you try a new Shiva (with bright switch and variable boost) or the <2006 model? Combo/Head and which cab?

How would you describe the differences in the drive channel? What has the Splawn more of / less of than the Shiva?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't Cornell do a similar thing?

They're english as well, amd maybe easier to get to hear/test one?

^ aye, the plexi. I haven't tried it, but I've tried the little romany plus, and it was really nice (like a small fender). Judging by that, the plexi is worth a try, at least.

Oh, and all this praise for the quickrod isn't exactly helping my GAS... :(

The Plexi is ... well, a Plexi - can hardly be compared to a Splawn or Bogner as they have much less gain.

Did you mean Cornford maybe? The MK50 is price wise in the ballpark of a QRod (with shipping) or Shiva....

Hey hunter, I think the Splawn is honestly is little more versitle and it cuts through the mix every single time.  It seems to me that the bogner does 2 things very well, where with my splawn, I can get a ton of different tones with it.  I like a little bit dirty of a clean channel, it allows me get some grit, and then back off the volume knob just a little bit and there you go, crystal clean!  The store I tired the bogner at said that they had just got this model in.
