Title: New BKP Day :P
Post by: Dakine on September 23, 2006, 11:34:10 AM
WooHoo

Tim IS Da Man.

Called him Thursday and ordered new pups and this morning (Saturday) first thing they arrived!

I was wanting to put some (proper :)) pups in my EBMM Petrucci for ages but was undecided on what to get.

Well, Tim had an idea and I certainly did'nt object :)

So, THANKS Tim!!!!!!!!!!!!!, I now have a pre-production set of PAINKILLERS

Just getting situated to fit em (to say it's tight/complex inside this Pet is an understatement, circuit boards etc. and it also has the piezo option, steady hands needed, gulp).

Bring The PAIN(killer) AGGGHHHHHHHHH!

went with zebra bridge and reverse zebra neck.

Clips of these and Custom Warpigs VERY soon, day or so!

well, done it, phew. Thats few mins/hours etc. off my life, that was TIGHT soldering on a pcb!

Anyway, what can I say?
IMO, Tim does NOT make a bad pickup so superlatives kinda get boring.

Thus far, THIS (Painkiller) is THE pup I have been waiting for.

Bear in mind I only have Warpigs and Custom Warpigs.
But with this in mind, these pups have the most orgasmic natural crunch and sustain for days.
Need to play alot more (only been through Mesa thus far, my ear is still deaf/in pain as Doc. was not much help till next week   so my hearing is not exactly on par/in stereo right now for good review). But thus far I have been smiling like a 'cheshire cat' and banging out Living After Midnight etc. LOL.
These pups are WONDERFUL! I adore the dual ceramic magnets!!!!!
The tone (straight off bat) is kinda classic NWOBHM and that being the starting point you can just imagine the tonal possibilities of amp tweaking/pedals etc.

Thankyou Tim, you are a gentleman and a scholar and a pickup GENIUS!

Painkillers RULE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow, they even have the little feet and short legs (rather like myself) to fit properly in the Music Man.  Talk about attention to detail!

So is this the is the very first set of Painkillers in the World?

He - is - the - Painkiller
Dakine - is - the - Painkiller!

LOL
Tim has one other set out there he said.

These were custom made (Thanks TIM!!!!!) for my EBMM, and he is  very up on this as an LP and EBMM was used for the testing of the pups.

They look great, guitar looks much better with zebra pickups in it. Need some clips when you ear gets better

What material is the Petrucci body? Interested in a PK for my strat when I get round to replacing its pickups.

Basswood body on Pet.

And YES, IMO 1,000% better with zebra pups.

Makes ya wanna wear lots of fringed leather playing these

Clips tomorrow (less a problem) as spoken to bud already and using his gear (as mine in Texas still :().

Will be clips of Custom Warpigged Explorer (at last) and Pet PAINKILLER!

Basswood body on Pet.

hmm, nothing tonally like alder I'm guessing? Woulda thought the PK's would be suited to a typical strat though.. will ask Tim when the time comes  :) Looking forward to your clips!

alder is abit 'darker' me thinks.

Basswood is used usually a.cause it's cheapish and not 'endangered' and b.as it is 'touted' as being neutral to let the pickups sound as they should (am sure to start summit now though LOL, just my opinion and what been told/read).

So are they faster than a laser bullet and louder than an atom bomb?
You should have got chromium plated boiling metal covers tho

I'm very jealous too... :(
I think I'll just go to play some Electric Eye into my room

LOL

due to Pet pickup cavity it was safer with open coil.

And YES to the other

Actually they are INSANE and sooooooooo dynamic/responsive. Course, makes amp work hard as they are quite different than C.Pig and tweaking is req.

What I intend to do tomorrow is find a setting that BOTH axe's will work with and leave it! Play exact same riff on both guitars, this should give a good reference between the C.Pig and PAINKILLER.

And am doing this at Andy Boulton's place (ex. Tokyo Blade/Shogun, Feline knows em) so might twist his arm for some insane stuff too  :P

I'm jealous. Of course if Tim is willing to ship pre-production model that means it's prolly close to being ready for production.

Anyway do you have any specs on these beasts?

Nick, just noticed from the pics you have the screw coil of the bridge pickup facing the neck.  A Tim recommendation or just for the hell of it  :?:

^ lol

eagerness to fit (wondered when someone would notice) :) nah.

Here's the deal.

Have played another guitar like this and loved it.

I asked Tim for Zebra bridge and reverse zebra neck.
Pups are fitted so BareKnuckle script would be read correct if looking from back (both same).
This way had to route the wiring under the pup too (BTW Tim, thanks for the surgical tubing but they are GREAT height as is :)). So 6 one 1/2 dozen another I guess anywho.
Anyway, thought would try it like this and as it sounds AWESOME not changing any time soon :)

So, there ya have it, mystery solved.

So, what's the painkiller like?

Is it tight grind or loose chug?
"dry" like nailbomb or "wet" like miracle man?

and what's the eq emphasis?

afraid I cannot comment on pups I don't own.
I will/have talked about other pups but only in general terms.

As compared to the Warpig/Custom Warpig;
It is VERY tight!!!!!!!!
Not owning a MM (at this point) I am loathed to make a comparrison, but would NOT say the PAINKILLER is dry.

Best desciption thus far is the NWOBHM (on steriods).

Think of a great gnarly, crunchy, punchy, precise guitar tone. Think Maiden, Judas Priest etc. I would say it is 'modern sounding' but only in the regard of an 'updated' sound. I have not tried any pedals yet but both through the ENGL and the Mesa it is puurrrfectttttttttt!

It is the tone I grew up on. Defined yet BRUTAL!
A laser guided piece of course sandpaper

More testing needs to be done but it is alot tighter than my 'pigs yet just as disturbing for small animals/children!

More to come............................

Tim mentioned a tone that made ya wanna run around the walls of a room :) He's right as usual  :P

Interesting.
iŽll wait for More reviews.
Q:)
any similarities with the VHII?
Title: New BKP Day :P
Post by: Dakine on September 23, 2006, 10:23:05 PM
JP
don't have a VHII so don't really have experience to comment.

I would say I think the Custom Warpig (yes ceramic) is bigger/tighter bass, if I am reading you right.

Nick

Hummmmmmmmm interesting,.
so, the painkiller has a more tight/focused bass than the regular warpig, but not tighter/focused/bigger than the Warpig ceramic?!
Q:)
THANKS
JP

JP, it's kinda difficult to explain.
I find it easier to use band/tone analagies as many will understand then.

Think of Hetfield CHUG with Custom Warpig, then Glenn Tipton GRIND with PAINKILLER.

BOTH are HUGE sounding pups but the Painkiller is just more New Wave Of British Heavy Metal to me (with modern tilt) whereas Custom Warpig is more Tight Thrash, no slop here, just modern HARDCORE. Many 'new' bands could use Custom 'Pig (in sound), Stone Sour, Godsmack. Kinda downtuned without downtuning if that makes sense.

Nick

hopefully clips will help :)
