The time has come, Waitrose has supplied me with the money, now it's time to blow it on a new amp :D .
Most of you know what i am looking for, metal amp, preferably one with great thrash tones.
I would also like some nice cleans.
I have narrowed it down to these 2. Have not heard a bad word about them, which is why i can't decide, which is why i came here haha.
Bad thing is i can't try before i buy with both these amps, so i'm having to rely on other peoples opinions, not the smartest idea! But it's the only way.
TO ANYONE WHO HAS ONE OF THESE AMPS PLEEEEAASE COMMENT IN THIS THREAD OR SEND ME A PM.
Randall RG50TC - £371.91 inc. post + 4 way footswitch
Laney LC50-II --- £390.00 inc. post (no footswitch :( )
Also, can anyone tell me what the build quality on these amps are like? If not these amps then just the company in general.
Cheers, Joe.
-
randall. if the lc50 is anything like the lc30 i tried, it's not great. it's a vintagey amp, along the line of a fender.
dunno about the build quality on the randalls though, I've only tried it (ditto most everything else I talk about) in a shop, it'd have to be pretty unreliable to fail there...
-
I have a Laney VC30 which is put together quite well.Wouldn't suit your taste (yes I know you are looking at an LC30). Do I remember Sambo having a Laney LC amp?
-
Well i think i'm going for the Randall, they have a reputation for making some great metal amps!
-
^ aye, I vastly preferred the vc30 to the lc30. The lc30, when cranked, sounded a bit like it was about to fall apart...
EDIT: bear in mind, the marshall dsl401 is almost in your price range (it's about £400)- it's pretty decent for the price, if by thrash you mean megadeth etc- it's worth a try too, if at all possible.
-
Yeah i took that into consideration before, but i thought it was pricey for what it was, and Marshall arn't really the best amps in the world if you know what i mean. Also i have a Marshall now and i would like a change.
And in some of the reviews i read on the Randall, they said the Randall sounds quite Marshally.
-
mm do not get the LC.... nonono
as dave says... its vintage...
well my LC30 is anyway... and i presume them being in the same kinda series.. means theyre similar...
-
Of those two, for metal, I'd get the Randall. Certainly different to the Marshall too.
-
Randall it is then.
-
the LC is a good wee amp, especially if you get a cheap secondhand one, but definately not what you want for thrash metal.
-
a headphone jack broke off inside my Randall that i had, when i opened it i was pleasantly suprised to find it was put together well, and this was the el cheapo Dimebag sig combo.
Should be good for metal, and L-O-U-D
Id take it over the Laney, and the DSL401.
good luck, i trust you have read the www.harmony-central.com reviews? Some are BS but its a good read as long as you dont take everything as the gospel ;)
-
Nah i havn't read those reviews, but i generally don't like reading many reviews because they all have a bunch of tw@ts rubbishing the product.
-
read them anyway.
its your money on the line so research as much as possible ;)
edit:
I just read some :P
BEST you dont read em, theres a country music fanatic bashing the Randall (LOL... informed purchase?) and a general opinion by the metal heads.. ;)
-
until recently i had an LC30 II, it is not, at all, a metal amp. I loved it, but I used it for smaller wedding gigs and stuff, covers most rock and pop fine and I found the clean channel very transparent and easy to find sounds with, but it really isn't suited to aggressive hi-gain sounds.
-
I've said it before about HC, and I'll say it again. If it's american, it gets big praise. If it's not, it might get a fair hearing. But if it's an american brand and constructed elsewhere, particularly China, it'll get rubbished for no other reason than that.
Damned whorehopping patriotic horseshite.

Ashdown Fallen Angel 60 2x12 DSP is back in the mix!
It's a bit more expensive than the Randall, but it has 2 speakers, effects and 10 more watts.
Though i don't know what the distortion is like, if it isn't as good as the Randalls dist. (which i don't think it will be) then i'll get the Randall, for definate!
-
10 watts means next to nothing- in fact, with tube amps, you could argue it's actually worse with more wattage, if you aren't able to crank it much. though 10 is liable to make next to no difference- so don't let that affect your decision. the built-in fx too, aren't really something to swing the deal with- they tend to sound cr@pish.
it really boils down to which amp sounds better (both at bedroom (if you need it for practicing too) and gig/loud volumes), and, if you can find out any reliable info, which will be more reliable in the long run.
-
^seconded... in-built effects are usually not nice at all... and exactly as dave said... 10 watts means nothing.
-
I know, it is more about the 2 speakers. Though i havn't tried one so i don't know what the distortion is like.
Does anyone know?
-
i had a 40w Ashdown FA
its a nu metal voiced amp
Mushy, bassy distortion.
Its a 1 trick pony aimed at a dead musical genre (hence why you can get the ap pretty cheap if you look on the net)
Very bassy amp, its not too bad with an SD-1 but i sold it on sharpish, nu metal isnt my thing :P
You NEED to try one, its not like a 'normal' amp, it is voiced for nu-metal, if you want to sound like Korn, Limp Bizkit etc then fine, if not, TRY before you buy or stay away, i'm not saying genre voiced amps like this arent automatically cr@p, they are just different..
Built in FX usually poor (as has been said)
Theres a JCM 900 50w combo (as new) on ebay if you search
... id take that over this one (and maybe over the Randall aswell!)
:D
-
Argh, i don't know what the hell to get now, might just try and get a Marshall tube amp after all of this.
-
I second what chrisola said. you can get a decent rock crunch on channel 1, but then that means you have no clean channel without rolling down your guitar's volume....
:drink:
-
haha crazy joe :P
its tough
i'm ampless at the moment as i needed to save money, but sorely tempted to buy a new one, like a Madison Divinity combo or a JCM900 or something..GAS attack..
-
I might just keep my eye on all the Marshalls on Ebay at the moment, because i'm not paying the huge shop prices for one.
-
Over on HC loadsa people seem to like Laney GH50L for metal, if you look in my overdrive/amp thread I posted some links to some clips which sound awesome. I'm almost definately getting one in the next few months so if you havent decided by then I'll hopefully be able to make some clips
-
Sounds pretty good, though there is no insane distortion clips but as long as i can get a good metal distortion i'll be happy.
-
Yeah well... we'll see when I get it just how brutal it can get  I can always boost it with my Rat if the distortion isnt much though it sounds perfect.
Though, I just realised this thread title says tube combo and I'm on about a head
-
lol Yeah, BUT i might get a head and a 2x12, but that depends on how cheap i can get a 2x12. I want a good one but i can't be spending loads on it as i only have about 450 odd quid and the amp alone will cotst £399, unless i wait til i get my next pay from Waitrose, but that is all the way at the end of the month!
-
^ wow. the end of the month?
wait. or better yet (if you're willing to blow that much on an amp) wait several months and get something kickass.
-
lol Nah can't be arsed, i found some good amps + cabs on ebay and if i'm very lucky i should get a head and cab for 430 quid!
-
Definately keep your eyes open on ebay. I just scored a cheap 2x12 with Eminence Legend speakers for £83 8)
-
Yeah i think i saw that too, but thats not the one i want lol
-
haha fair enough. What heads you looking at?
-
I saw a mother of a deal when i saw an Engl Screamer 50 head on there for £300, i think it is still the same price and has only a day or something to go.
Edit: By the way you got yourself a kick ass deal!
-
i know of an ENGL Fireball for £450, with new valves and a service
on harmony central (try and find it :P)
but i want it (should NEVER have sold my 1st one) so ner ner :P
That screamer would be an awesome buy off ebay 8)

Go for it if it stays cheap :D
I think this cab will need a bit of work, new grille and maybe some handles (dont know if its got any), but for the price you cant argue, the speakers are around £40 each anyway!
My dad doesnt seem to understand its a great deal, hes always skeptical about stuff on ebay :P
-
Haha, i really want this Screamer, but someone just put the price up to £360, i know you will probably be thinking, thats not much for a screamer, stop being such a tight bar-steward! But in order to afford a good cab the price needs to stay in that kind of region, thats why i was thinking of getting the GH50L because it is only £399 brand new. But the Screamer will do Metal a lot better and i really want an Engl, i might extend my cash boundaries and buy the head and wait a while till i get the cab, it will be a long process but i will be getting some kickass stuff for crazy prices!
-
Well you could always buy it now and save for the cab you want again..
I'm buying the cab 2 months before my birthday when I'll be able to have the head. Following Dakines advice of "being in the right place at the right time" or something like that I recall. Seems silly to miss a good deal on some gear just because you'll have to wait a while for the other bit.
-
Yeah Dakine looks like he has got himself some great deals with his gear, i think i might have to go all out for this Screamer because i don't think i will be finding one this cheap anywhere for a while.
-
go for it, it's close to me but NOT me (this time).
Thinking it will go higher than that bud but ya never know.

Tom, saw ya deal, looks cool and IMO VERY good thinking (hey, my dad taught me so am not 'the sage' or anything lol, R.I.P. dad).
Patience,funds,right place ;)
Feels good when it works huh ;)
-
lol Yeah i know it will go up a bit since there are only 4 Engl amps on the whole Ebay. But i'm hoping it will stay down.
-
If you need a good but cheap cab, there's some Framus 2x12" loaded with Celestion V30 for 300€ in germany (10€ shipping).
http://www.thomann.de/thoiw9_artikel-179559.html
-
Who is Framus? They good?
-
Unfortunatley i don't think i can get the Engl, it's still the same price, but it is collection only and it is miles and miles away from me. I asked to see if the guy would post it, he hasn't replied and there is only 8 minutes of the auction left!
Edit: Yep it's gone, and only for £395!! That has pissed me off a lot!
Edit 2: I have found a back up head!
-
Killswitch Engage use Framus don't they?
-
^ aye, but they've changed their amps so often that it's hard to replicate their tone exactly. also a lot of the time they record a mixture of a couple of amps...
-
Framus is good, german made. I got some review of that 212 and it seems it's very good for the money.
I might get one in the future.
