Title: pickup spacing
Post by: I_cant_play on September 26, 2006, 09:02:50 PM
just getting ready to order a set of mules for my epi lp. I measured the spacing between the centres of the polepieces at the bridge pickup and it's 52mm. however the low e string is about 2mm "inside" the outer polepiece. which spacing should I order in this case?

thanks

a les paul should have 50mm spacing assuming it has a tune-o-matic

I rmemeber tim saying that that is not always the case. some newer les pauls apparently have 52mm....

The string spacing across the bridge saddles on your LP, or on a modern Gibson, is probably between 52 and 52.5mm, so over the bridge pickup it'll be about 51mm (older - much older - Gibsons would probably be narrower).

If you go for 50mm spacing, the strings will be towards the "outside" of the polepieces, with 52mm they'll be towards the "inside", so really one is as good as the other - take your pick!  Personally I prefer 52mm for the bridge and 50mm for the neck.

thank for the replies guys.

that said. I just ordered my first set of mules! very excited about this :)
I chose open coils with the bridge pickup black and the neck zebra. the pup's are gonna be unpotted too.
