Title: Difference btwn Miracle Man, Nailbomb and Warpig?
Post by: keano on June 17, 2005, 05:34:14 AM
I have EMG Zakk set in one of my LP but wish the 81 in bridge had more low end crunch and cleaned up slightly better.

Seems Miracle Man is named after Ozzy = Zakk Wylde right? I have tried Ceramic pups before and have found them to be very bright abrasive.

Are the Warpigs heavier then the Miracle Man?

And are Nailbombs more Alice in Chains older 80's rock?

Right now I have WCR Fillmores in one, and Zakk EMG set in another. I want a different sound that is heavy but articulate.

Hi Keano, welcome to the forum-I've answered this in a personal email reply to your email but just to recap, the Nailbomb will do this better than the other two and check the clips in the players room.

If you like the 81 but want more bass just could try an MXR EQ set for a bass boost, the other guitarist in my band does this and it's a great sound.  Alternatively, you could go for an 85 like I have in my LP.

And of course you could always go for one of Tim's fine 'buckers which will no doubt do the job (and then some)

A Warpig has virtually the same amount of gain as an 81 but bags more tone and serious bottom end-not flabby though. There's some great clips in the players room. PDT_045

The WarPigs are very, very growly.  I couldn't believe how good they were when I played them, and they beat anything that DiMarzio, Seymour Duncan or EMG can put out, ever.

The Warpig is an evil lump of metal, magnets and wires, indeed.
It cured me from being stuck to EMG81's.

Good question. 81 are scooped  believe. What is the EQ curve like on the MM, Nailbomb and Warpig. Hi's, mids, lows?

Turns out the next guitar is another Les Paul that will be all downtuned a wholestep.

I would say the Warpig something like:

Bass: 10
Mid: 6
Treble: 8

This is my perception of it, wich doesn't make it the absolute truth. 8)

I can pretty much agree with ratrod on the warpig. Its got more low mids than high mids, though. Its sounds like this to me:

Bass: 10
Low mid: 8
High mid: 5
Treble: 7

It grinds and punches with enough trebble to stop it being muddy, plus 20% (just my impression).

To compare and contrast with something familiar, my 81 (when it was in the same guitar) is more like:

Bass: 7
low mid: 5
High mid: 8
treble: 10

WIth the bass very low and tight, but not that high in amplitude.

Much as I hate to dissagree with Tim (very unwise, but I'm pretty sure of this) the 81 has more gain. Not much, but its noticable A/b-ing my 81 and pig.

It all depends what axe the pickups in. Active pickups work in a very different way to a passive, so it is hard to compare them. Theres nothing wrong with EMG's, there very good at what they do, the only problem is that’s all they do well! Actives can sound sterile and I find them too processed and unnatural, if that can be used to describe the sound of a pickup! The warpig is the closest I think any one has got to an EMG in a passive form.

The Nailbomb will have less output but a more open and natural with a slight vintage sound.
The miracle man will have the same sort of tone but in a passive format. It does the Zakk sound very well as you can hear in Tims Ozzmossis tracks in the players room.

Cool.

Ok, in eq terms and general tonal difference what would a ceramic warpig be like?

The ceramic warpig will have a tighter bass response, making it a very good metal pickup, the compromise is that you won’t have such a nice clean tone and it will compress your tone more. Listen to the difference between Ratrods and Jonny macs clean clips and you will hear the difference that a ceramic magnet makes to the tone.
